Chris Phillips has signed a three year / $9.25 million dollar contract extension, which also includes a no- movement clause.
Good move by Murray or no ?

Now, I know that everyone will be takling about the Boyes deal right now, but . . . this, to me, is the real shocker.
What the Ottawa Senators management team is thinking, I have no idea . . . but it looks all wrong.
WAY too expensive for an over the hill defenceman who many thought the Sens would be trying to move, not keep! WAY too much money to throw at a d-man that will be hitting career lows in goals, assists, +/- . . . I mean, I know the Sens have had a crap season, but in 62 games, 1g, 4a and a -25 is brutal. WAY too much money to throw at a defenceman who has never hit 30 points, probably isn't physical enough for his size, and looks to be falling off the end of a stats cliff, and looks very very slow out there. WAY too long a contract for a d-man that looks like he was ready for retirement . . . TODAY.
Brutal signing.

yes way too much money. good community guy and probably a good leader on the team who will help mentor all the young players coming in. but . very little physical play and he is getting slower with every game. he was never able to handle the puck. he is clearly in decline and this is too much money |

I don't think the money is that out of line for Phillips, if the Sens didn't give him $3 million per there would definitely be a few teams willing to this summer when he was a UFA. However, if i was Murray, i would of traded him. |

ryan93 - so, Chris Phillips has never brought that much offence, and he is clearly not playing good defence as he was a few years back . . . so for 3 million a year, he is a good signing? For what, leadership in the dressing room of a rebuilding team?
Yeah, he would have gotten picked up by another team looking for a fourth defenceman, sure - and with the right pairing, I am sure he would have been quite effective. And I get it that he is a stand up guy, been with the Sens for so long, etc.
But that to me says that you either sign him out of respect for a mil on a one year contract and an extension clause based on performance; or you deal him to a contender that will overpay.

I think this might be a loyalty signing by Murray since Phillips has been in Ottawa so long. At least he is good veteran presence during the rebuild.

What are your thoughts on the Sens .....Sensfan ?? You must be so disgusted to watch how powerful they were just 3 years ago to what they`ve become today.
Seems like it all happened in just a blink of an eye.
Brian Murray to me, is one of the most stupid GM`s i`ve ever seen, besides JFJ. Seems like he never gets fair trade value back. Been signing a lot of soft, over-the-hill players the last couple of years too. |

I don't think it was that bad a signing. Philips clearly wasn't going to waive his NTC. So Murray wasn't going to get anything from trading Phillips.
I don't think they wanted a repeat of a Wade Redden situation where somebody signed him to a contract that was beyond Ottawa's means. Look what NJ paid for his partner last year $5M.
This is an awful team and Phillips had awful stats to go with it. Based on his career numbers, this is an anomaly (on the +/- side). Phillips will never be that offensive defensemen. So $3M for a solid stay at home defenceman is good value.
Phillips clearly wanted to stay. Kept his request reasonable and likely will retire a Senator.
It is also a signing about image of the organization, it shows Ottawa is an organization that treats its players with respect unlike some other cut throat teams that trades players with NTC by threatening to send them to the minor or having them sit in the press box. How attractive would it be for a UFA to want to join an organization that won't screw them over? |

Guest 4278 - I appreciate the dig at the Leafs, and honestly it is nice when an organisation gives the respect to a long time, faithful and productive player. I said as much when Sundin was about to become UFA . . . I thought the Leafs owed him the respect of giving him close to what he wanted. I get that.
But this - 3 mil for a stay at home defensive defenceman who can't play good defence anymore - is over the top. And, you will regret it mightily, I predict.
If he wasn't going to trade his NTC, you give him a choice: take a paycut and play for our club, ride out into the sunset as a Sen on an insentive-laden contract - or play in the minors.
I predict the last two years that the Sens will be paying a player who is not in the NHL at that time.

There was no dig at TO. I was thinking more of Doug Weight a few of years back.
Phillips took a pay cut. He will earn less next year than this current. I see a couple of D-men in that range and that skill. Bryan Allen comes readily to mind. Mike Commodore is similar style with a bigger contract.
I will dig into the leafs because you expect me to with Phaneuf at close to $7M being almost as useles as Phillips the last couple of years. What about Komisarek you ask? That would just be mean.
$3M for a #3 or 4 defencemen going forward is reasonable don't you think? |

I don't see a lot of Phillips - is he really that bad?
When I do see him, I see a pretty reliable defensive presence who has size and isn't afraid to use it, and can play north of 20 minutes a game.
That is worth 3M/year in the NHL, and he'll probably be a 3rd/4th defenseman in OTT. However, perhaps I only see his "good games", so I'm curious to know if my view is accurate. |

I truly think Phillips is a good NHL defenceman. He is not a top shut-down guy anymore but he is still a very solid defender. As for Duke's question I really think Murray has earned himself another chance after what he's done in the past few monthes. I feel he's done a great job with 11 picks in the upcoming draft and 5 in the first 2 rounds. Murray is nowhere near as bad as JFJ other than Kovalev and Gonchar I think he's done a good job and he is an excellent drafter.

sensfan....just curious. I see you mentioned the Gonchar signing as a bad one. What i'm wondering is how did you (and Ottawa fans in general) react to the deal when it was done? Were you liking it originally or did you hate it from day 1? A lot of moves like this one look good but just don't work out. If the avg Ott fan liked the aquisition when it was made and now hate it as it hasn't worked out, it's a tough one to judge as far as Murray's performance don't you think? |

So, Phillips is supposedly a decent defensive defenceman?
43 giveaways, 22 takeaways (brutal) 117 blocked shots (tied for 25th) 94 hits (middle of the league) 64 shots, 36 missed shots (terrible - usually missed shots is about one third of total)
The stats certainly don't show that. I haven't seen it either.

When I heard about it on Canada Day my reaction was along the lines of "It has potential to be a good signing, if only he doesn't disappear for 20 games at a time like Kovalev does." (That is, Kovalev will go 20 games without a point, then net a hattrick, and a couple 2 goal games in short order - boom or bust).
As for Phillips, I think he is still a good NHL D-man, though not Top 2 anymore. It does seem that he'll be somewhat overpaid given his performance of late (granted on a pretty horrible team this year, but still).
As an addendum, it will be good to have a few veterans "in the room" for all the young guys coming up. |

I think this is a perspective blown well out of proportion and very short term views. Up until this season Phillips was known to be one of the top shutdown guys in the NHL for the past 7ish seasons. Furthermore, when shutdown players face the leagues best offensive players night in and night out there numbers are generally low. Guys like Robin Regeher, Roman Polak, Barrett Jackman, and Derek Morris. All are brilliant defensive players and rarely do any of these guys have decent stats.
Furthermore, $3 million a season for a defensemen who chews up 22+ minutes a game and can shut down guys is not an overpayment in the least. That is the going rate. It's not a long term deal for a 32 yr old defensemen as most are looking for those 5-6 year deals, and the money is reasonable for not only the salary cap but also does not handcuff the Sens not being able to trade him.
Horrible year, no doubt about it. But this is a reasonable contract for a talented hockey player. |

That's a fair point on the stats there, Beans.
Ok, I'll lay off Phillips for now, and we'll by next year this time what he's doing.

Coming late into this arguement, but strongly agree with Bean's comments. Stats ain't gonna highlight this guys career. Nobody has an accurate stat for a stay at home shut down defensman on a crap team. And yes im making a shot at my own team here cause 4-5 years as a great team,10ish as a middlepack and mediocre team. You show me the stat for a stay at home shutdown guy and I will shut my mouth on this point. Oh wait, Beans already showed the stat, minutes per game.
3 million a year for the minutes chewed up per game against the oppositions best lines and a natural leader as well. Former 1st rounder with lots of playing year ahead of him.
He is very much like a Brad Stuart on Detroit. Underated until he is injured. Its then you wonder whats missing on the ice. |
