SJ has extended Niemi for 4 years at 3.8M per year. Good signing IMO, after a pretty bad start, he has settled into his new team, and has been stellar since Christmas. He appears to be back to the Niemi that CHI let go at the end of the playoffs, and represents pretty good value at this price.

I'd have to agree. After a really rough start, he's sporting a 23-15-3 record with 5 shutouts. Not too shabby esp considering he lost 4 of his first 5? He's won 14 of his last 18, that's a pretty good run he and the Sharks are on!
At that price, i think it's a great signing for SJ. |

| I know Niemi has the Stanley Cup on his resume which certainly helps, but kind of surprising in a way that he gets 4 years & $15 million & when all Jimmy Howard signed for yesterday was 2 years & 5 million. |

That might speak more to how good DET management is at getting players to sign good contracts - they seem to always be able to do it, and Howard is just the latest.
That being said - Howard has had a pretty ordinary year after last year's stellar breakout. His win/loss record will likely end up the same - playing for DET I would expect that, they are a good enough defensive team to prop up a goalie. But his GAA is way up and SV% is way down from last year, and he has not played consistently thru the year. The contract he just signed looks like a "prove your rookie year wasn't a fluke" sort of deal - he either will or he won't. If he's putting up his rookie numbers again next year and the year after, I could see him signing a Neimi-like contract.
Neimi on the other hand, despite his very bad start, is on target to better last year's wins, GAA, and SV%, and has really come on strong lately. His season has not been inconsistent, rather it has been 2 halves - the slow start followed by a return to normalcy. And, he does have a cup win, which adds to his value no matter how others undervalue his contribution to that cup. The contract he is currently playing through is his "prove your rookie year was no fluke" contract, and he's proving it. Hence the deal. |

Is Niemi really worth that much ??
I don`t know but it seems like a lot of money, he has a stanley cup ring i know...... How much does Chris Osgood make ? he has one stanley cup ring which he played all through the playoffs...guess he must have more rings too ?
Has Niemi really proven he is one of the leagues best ? |

A 3.8mil cap hit is very reasonable. Remember, san jose had Nabokov as a goaltender with a much higher caphit, so this is way, way cheaper.
His money is far from "league's best" Here is a list of top goalie cap hits this year:

Thanks guest, so 5 guys from above list have won a cup.(I try to blank out from my mind the Anaheim win of the cup due to Pronger winning it the year after he left EDM) |

I'd say so. A good comparison to me would be Halak. Getting similar money. While he hasn't/didn't win the cup, he certainly proved he could play when the going got tough. Don't think many would argue that Chi would have won with Halak between the pipes! |

I assume you meant not many would argue that Chi would NOT have won with Halak.
Still not really sold on Niemi. Sure, he has decent numbers but has always played on elite level teams. My initial reaction was that it was kind of an overpayment, but it is hard to argue against that list...it looks like niemi is making bottom-third starter money, which is the category I would put him in. |
