1) For those of you who may not have seen it, Dany Heatley elbowed Steve Ott in last night's Stars/Sharks game. It was one of many "nasty" incidents in the game.

Anyhow, Heatley has now been suspended two games.

Feel free to comment on these too:

Langenbrunner's hit from behind on Wallin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UN-2e353fg8)

Murray on Eriksson (right at the start of the TSN clip)

Murray on Vinocur (at about the :40 mark of the TSN clip)

The Heatley elbow is around the 1 min mark in the TSN clip.

Thoughts?

After a real quick look, the Murray on Vinocur looked worse than the one on Eriksson but the Heatley elbow was worse than both. I have no complaint with him being suspended and could have seen it be even longer. I mean, the goal is to get this crap outta the game isn't it??

What??? Seriously, are you guys watching the same game??? C'mon, watch the video. It clearly shows that Heatley made contact with Ott's collarbone and the follow through went on to hit one of hair's on Ott's chin........

Why is this joke not getting old on me yet?? I think I might be 12 yrs old..........

NHL hit this on the head. No injury but punished on the action. They clearly missed some other calls in that game but one thing the NHL must do is punish the calls they do catch properly.

Not sure what Heatley was thinking on that one, i'm glad he was suspended on the play even though there was no injury to Ott. Hopefully Loui Eriksson is alright & doesn't miss much time. The Stars have had to deal with a number of elbows recently. It was a Sami Pahlsson elbow that caused Brad Richards to miss 11 games with a concussion as well.

it looks to me like the fine is only half the salary for the game. healty makes more than 3.9 million. thought he was in the 7 million a year which would make him forfeit 160,000 or somewhere in that area?

Murray on Eriksson looked fine to me. Murray's elbow was down and came up in the follow through. Eriksson reached out and forward at the last second which lowered his head, and Murray was already committed to the hit. Eriksson put himself in that position and Murray wasn't intentionally aiming for his head (and it was not from behind or from the blind side) Good hit. Unfortunate for Eriksson (great player!) Reminds me of the the Moore hit on Naslund in that a player was vulnerable http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owpYYNjWnro. Only the difference is that in the Moore hit he had time to play the loose puck instead, but opted take the head of the player who was vulnerable. Murray, on the other hand, had already committed his body to the hit and wasn't aiming for the head. Moore had options, Murray didn't.

Murray on Vinocur. I don't have a problem with it. Murray stood his ground on a guy that was about to take him - two bodies can not occupy the same space. I know if I'm going to collide with someone I'm going to try to be the last guy standing. Clearly Murray agrees.

Heatley on Ott. Suspend him. That was horrible! No doubt Ott deserves it considering his own style of play, but regardless, it was dirty. Not as dirty as Domi on Niedermayer but still nasty http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPbN72u4hxs . 2 games might be a little light in my opinion.

Leigh,

thanks for that, I couldn't agree more, and even though I spout off about the safety of the players being foremost, hockey is still a contact sport, and before all the hoopla about headshots, those 2 hits by Murray would be Scott Stevenslike?, but instead they get lumped together with the other more questionable and legitimate arguments regarding headshots.

What bothered me, is that the players on the Stars bench reacted like the hit Murray threw was Cooke on Savard. Methinks even they are getting confused.

Both of Murray's hits were similar, playing the puck, chance to take the body as part of the play, and in both instances the elbow was tucked and the shoulder was lowered, no high follow through, no leaving the feet, no unnecessary malice on the hits.

Unfortunately when a forward gives up 3-4 inches and probably 40 - 50 pounds, they are going to get, what in this case, IMHO, was a good old fashioned 'bell ringing', and as always, keeping your head on the Messier swivel, and knowing who you are battling with the puck for, still applies.

Clean hits, good hockey plays. Heatley? not dissimilar to what Patrice Cormier did to Mikael Tam, but with a much less violent outcome thank goodness.

He deserves probably a couple more games.
