Anybody know/remember how the Oilers played after trading Gretz? Was it anything like this back-to-back shutout streak the Oil is on?

3-0 to Phoenix, and then 4-0 to a division rival? Did the entire team just pack it in or what?

I think the team has given up, you trade there best player and get nothing but hopes and maybes for the future, you would be discouragd as well, sure they are supposed to be professionals but they are only human and I think the players are unhappy with the way things worked out.

Let's not get to hasty on the Oil. I would like to see the record of ANY NHL with 7 injuries to starters and 2 injuries to call ups. This includes 3 of their 4 starting centres. I don't think there's a team in the NHL that could weather that storm. It just happens to overlap with the trade.

Let's face it, this year was done well before Ryan Smyth got traded.

LOL CM you seem to be having lots of trouble. Maybe try this. As soon as you get on PickupHockey, go to the right hand corner of the screen and sign in. That way you are always signed in untill you sign out.

That's a pitiful excuse for Edmonton's losing streak. Now I hate Edmonton, and I love the fact they're losing, don't get me wrong, but I hate when people overplay Smyth's role on this team. Sure he was a good player, top 25 in the league, but he wasn't THE WHOLE TEAM. The reason the Oilers are losing is because they have 10 players, regulars or not, who are injured. This on top of the loss of Smyth (which does have an impact, but is not THE ONLY EXCUSE). I hate how the media and to some extent the fans are putting all the blame on losing Smyth. HE WASN'T THAT GOOD, get over yourselves! He never got more than 70 points! I know he had a "presence" and was good for the Edmonton community, but face it, he WAS NOT the whole hockey club. Before Smyth tipped those shots in or cleaned up those rebounds, someone had to put those pucks on net and right now, that's what's not getting done. It's not for a lack of a player who can screen a goalie or push a puck three feet into the net that the Oilers have lost seven straight games.

Babs, you are dead right on this one. The Oilers were playing poorly well before Smyth left and him leaving is not the reason the team is struggling. How about Stoll, Moreau, Reasoner, Staios, Hedja, Tjarnqvist, Roy, Gilbert, Hemsky, and Nedved all hurt??? And the Buffalo Sabres have 5 injured players, not 10. BIG difference. Edmonton is an average team losing 10 players. Buffalo is an elite team losing 5. Not even close to the same.

This year is toast, everyone can see that. And for all you guys that think the Oilers should have signed Smyth, just wait for the summer. See what Kevin Lowe does and who he brings on board. I am certain he will get an Elite, Pronger type player or two and being paying them with money they would have wasted on Smyth. Smyth is not a #1 guy. Never will be. If you want to see a Cup in Edmonton any time soon, the only way it will happen is without Smyth hoisting it. It's the sad truth.

Beans, I think your wrong, I doubt that Klowe will be able to sign any big name players in the summer, he could not even get a current NHL player out of the Smyth trade. I feel that the Oilers woes are directly due to Smyth not being resigned, no he did not carry the whole team but at least the team tried when he was there and maybe now they have completely lost respect and faith in the management.
Maybe time to change the guard, just because MacT, Klowe and the others were former oil heroes doesn't mean they can lead the team into the future, Maybe the 5 mill that they saved from Smyth they can spend on a new GM and new coaches.
Look at a player like MA bergeron, and believe me I am glad he is gone, but MacT could not get him to be worth anything now look at him 9 points in ten games. Maybe they should try to pick up Nolan in the off season and have a coach that can get players to play. MacT has lost the players and I doubt he will be able to get them back.
And woe is the OIlers with Toby Peterson as there best player.
IMO
