I just read up on the Clint Malarchuk skate cut, so it gave me this idea.

What are some of the most gruesome hockey injuries of all time?

From what I've seen, its got to be Malarchuk getting his throat cut. Another one is Donald Audette getting his hand cut.

Any other injuries of note??

Havent seen Audette but Malarchuk cut was somme nasty s*** man I don't think any injuries could have been worst. And didn't he play like a week after that? Unbelievable.

Haven't seen Malarchuk. Someone have a link?? From what I have seen it has to be either what Chris Simon did or Todd Bertuzzi. I only put Bertuzzi because every time I see it I still can't believe he planned it out.

Malarchuk and Audette are both in here, along with some other ones from different sports:

Malarchuk is the worst I've seen. It's actually hard to watch.

I stopped watching around #6 cause they were just too nasty (except Sturm, that one wasn't too bad). The Audette one was disgusting though.

Malarchuk's has to be the worst in any sport. I didn't watch the video above through to the end but I couldn't imagine something more gruesome than someone's neck being slit and blood pouring out like a video game. That video I've seen many times.

Malarchuk's is the worst. I've seen several YouTubes of it. You've only got a little over a gallon of blood in you...that's gotta be painful.

P.S. That video was restricted for those under 18?? Come on, it can't be that nasty.

Did you see the Top 10 video above? It is pretty nasty. Like I said, I haven't even sucked up enough guts to watch it through. They also probably have to screen it for "18 year olds and over", wouldn't the FCC be imposing that?

No I didn't watch it. I don't have a YouTube account and I didn't feel like getting one just to watch one video.

Allright, it peaked my curiosity so I signed up and watched it.
...I really don't see why it was restricted; there wasn't even any blood in it (except Malarchuk). The most gruesome clip other than Clint was that baseball player's foot getting twisted around.

But I'm not by any means trying to undermine the pain it caused those athletes, stuff like that would certainly hurt like crap and it's unfortunate they had to experience such injuries.

Malarchuk. I was there, 10 rows up, and on top of that, a 12 year old aspiring goalie at the time. Needless to say, the incident is etched into my memory forever.

YOU WERE THERE?????????????????????

Wow. That has to suck. You have to tell me (us) what it was like in the rink after that happened.

One more thing: Having seen it, can you possibly understand why so many goalies today don't wear the plastic neck guard under their mask?

Hard to put into words. The air was sucked out of the building no doubt. Ppl weren't talking, but most were in such shock that everyone was silent, or freaking out. I heard some ppl fainted and even had heartattacks. I saw one or two players throw up on the bench too. It was toward the end of the period, so they scraped up the blood as best they could, resurfaced, and played the rest of the game.

Needless to say, after that game I wore a neck guard in every practice and game since.

I can't believe you were there. Thats incredible. I heard about people fainting and getting heart attacks and stuff. And the players throwing up.

But I would also like to point out that even though I don't think anything could be worse than blood gushing out like that, Bill Masterton died in a game in 1968 from a hit. And a couple years ago in east europe, a similar thing happened like with malarchuk but he did not recieve immidiate medical attention and died.

Yeah, that was Sergei Zholtok of Latvia. He had heart problems all his life, and he had to leave a game against Belarus because he didn't feel well, and died after the game. He was 33.

The Clint Malarchuk injury was quite graphic, but I remember watching a Wing - Leafs game when Borje Salming had to receive 250 facial stitches when he was cut by Gerard Gallant's skate in 1986...

The best way to convince a fool that he is wrong is to let him have his own way...

And getting hit in the face with a 100mph slapshot and still having the guts to finish the game back when goalies didn't wear masks was admirable.

I don't think that was the one I was talking about even though I've heard of that one too. From http://www.letsgosabres.com/pressbox/fullstory.php?newsid=10240

In October 1995, in an exhibition game between Swedish hockey teams Brynas and Mora, Bengt Akerblom's neck was slashed by Mora player Andreas Olsson's skate in a freak accident. By the time Akerblom reached the hospital, he had lost too much blood and died.

There's no question arguments can be made for those two incidents. In addition, you could argue Salming's, and Trent McLeary, who had his trachea shattered after blocking a shot with his neck, were the worst ever.

Oh, and for the record, Malarchuk would've died if the skate went any deeper (The exterior jugular was severed, but the interior jugular remained in tact). He was also lucky that Jim Pizzutelli (Sabes trainer back then) is a badass and shoved his thumb in Malarchuk's open neck to stop the bleeding. All in all Malarchuk needed over 300 stitches.

Yep, one player (forget who, it's on the tip of my tongue) said "I've developed this really bad habit. I like to play hockey"

Man it must've been weird to have been there when Malarchuk was cut like that. Right now I'm watching some thing on Animal Planet where a guy got stung by a foot-long Vietnamese centipede. I'm not sure which is worse.

Ooh, the audette one really disturbed me becuase I do that play all the time, maybe twice a game, (cause i'm always the one backchecking lol) and now whenever I do it without thinking, I'll just be a bit freaked out..
But the Malarchuk one was definatly worse, that's why I'm glad I'm not a goalie..

Yeah really. Did you see that pic in the article hithere311 posted? Man...

Some Swedish player died in a similar accident. Rule #1 in hockey: If possible, don't be a goalie. If you are a goalie, WEAR YOUR FRIGGIN' NECK PROTECTOR!

I'm suprised it doesn't happen more often. You see skates flying in the air really close to people all the time. Ever time I see some player slide into the goalie or the net I can just picture all the blood thats about to flow.
