Dustin Penner is scoreless so far this season, and with only two assists in 14 games played, he's not off to a great start. When LA traded for him last spring, they were hoping for bigger things from Penner, but in 33 games played (14 this season and 19 last season), Penner has tallied exactly 2 goals and 6 assists for a grand total of 8 points for the Kings!

Extrapolated to a full season, his 33-game performance with the Kings works out to about 5 goals and 15 assists over 82 games. Not much for a guy being paid $4.25 million this season! Penner is in the last year of his 5-year $21.25 million contract, and his highlight season was in 2009-2010 when he scored 32 goals and 31 assists, but his performance has tailed off since.

I watched him play a lot when he was with the Oilers, and he often looked uninspired. I've only watched him play a couple of times this season, and he's taken uninspired to a new level. Averaging 14 minutes of ice-time per game, he's logging 3rd line minutes, so he's going to have to play himself out of this funk, and some would say he's been in a funk for a long time.

If pride doesn't motivate a player, you would think money would? But with Penner becoming a UFA next season, he's not demonstrating any talent or value which would cause a team to send him a significant offer sheet! At least not right now!
