Hi,

I noticed an error yesterday, and given that error, it may be possible that this problem spreads to all past scoring of this year, but that's what I'm here to ask.

Yesterday the Canucks beat Colorado 6-0. Luongo got pulled in the game after getting a puck to the neck, and Cory Schneider played the 2nd and 3rd periods and got a shutout.

In the scoring of last night Luongo was assigned the Win AND the Shutout. This is incorrect, as the goalie who finishes the game gets the win, and in this case, Cory Schneider was NOT assigned the shutout by the NHL. (i don't know why, but whatever)

So could you please fix this, and also check all previous games where goalies were pulled, so make sure you did not incorrectly award them the WIN points in the case their team won

Thanks.

FYI,
the goalie that is in the net when his team scores the game winning goal gets the win. So Luongo was in the net when they scored the 1st goal (game winner) so he gets the W. And I am pretty sure that the NHL does not give a shutout to either goalie in a shared shutout.

Actually, in the case of a goalie getting pulled or leaving the ice injured, BOTH goalies are awarded the shutout. Same thing last year happened with Brent Johnson and Marc Andre Fleury.

This question / topic has been front and center since the other night. FWIW, here's what Wikipedia has to say......(pay specific attention to the BOLD parts. )

Ice hockeyIn ice hockey, a shutout (SO) is credited to a goaltender who successfully stops the other team from scoring during the entire game. A shutout may be shared between two goaltenders, but will not be listed in either of their individual statistics. The record holder for most regular-season career shutouts in the National Hockey League is Martin Brodeur with 116 (see the all-time regular season shutout leaders). The modern-day record for a team being shut out in a season is held by the Columbus Blue Jackets at sixteen, during the 2006-2007 NHL season.

In the event a shutout happens while using several goaltenders, the shutout will be credited to the team who shut out the opponent; however, no single goaltender will be awarded the shutout. It has happened seven times in NHL history, including:

During the 1982-83 Washington Capitals season, the Washington Capitals and their goalies Al Jensen and Pat Riggin had shared a shutout.

December 8, 2001: the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim won 4-0 over the Minnesota Wild with Jean-Sébastien Giguère and later, Steve Shields keeping the net.

November 23, 2006: the Nashville Predators won 6-0 over the Vancouver Canucks with Tomas Vokoun who left the game injured. He was replaced by Chris Mason who completed the job.

December 12, 2007: the Ottawa Senators won 6-0 over the Carolina Hurricanes with Ray Emery who left the game injured after making one save. He was replaced by Martin Gerber who finished off the other 31 saves.

December 1, 2009: the Toronto Maple Leafs won 3-0 over the Montreal Canadiens with Jonas Gustavsson who left the game after the first period because of heart problems. He was replaced by Joey MacDonald who played the last two periods.

February 2, 2011: the Pittsburgh Penguins won 3-0 over the New York Islanders with Brent Johnson who left the game after instigating a fight with Islanders' goalie Rick DiPietro with 17 seconds left in the third period. Johnson was replaced by goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury[9]

December 6 2011 Roberto Luongo of the Vancouver Canucks stopped all his shots against the Colorado Avalanche before taking a shot to the neck, his replacement Cory Schneider completed the team shutout.

So, i'm not sure how pool sites score them, but it seems to me neither goalie should be creditted with a SO. It is basically what's called a "team shutout".

I'm in a pool which is reg'd on Office Pools (sorry admin, not my choice ) and FWIW, here's what they have on their notice board:

The Canucks shutout is credited as a team shutout. Roberto Luongo gets credit for the win as he was the goalie who was playing when the game deciding 1-0 goal was scored.

Actually now that I think about it. That's a pretty dumb rule.

What if the Canucks had not scored any more goals in that 6-0 win, and it had ended 1-0. It would have been Schneider who preserved the shutout (and in that case the only reason for the win) for the majority of the game. So it's stupid to award it to the first goalie.

Ok one last comment... sorry I keep thinking about it after I post something lol.

So if Schneider had let in a goal during the last game (an 'oops' moment even), he would have been credited with the win. This is correct?

Niether goalie got the shutout, thats the point, Luongo gets the W cause he was in for the Wining goal, and if Schnieder had let in goals and the Canucks had lost Schnieder would have gotten the loss. not really a stupid rule, sorry it messes with your pool, but its just the way it is.

CANUCKS RULE!!!

What's messing with my pool right now is that Luongo is still being credited with a shutout. Please correct this in the scoring so that it doesn't result in fist fights when the guy holding Luongo "wins" the pool by 1 or 2 points at the end of the year.

Hey gang, so in this situation the shutout is awarded to the team only and not the individual goalies. So Vancouver is awarded the shutout only.

Tomorrow morning (Dec 9), the following will be reflected in the stats:
a) the shutout will be removed from Luongo's stats
b) Vancouver will only be awarded only 1 shutout (two were mistakenly handed out)

FYI there is no need to worry about the stats, we reconcile them daily to catch NHL statistical changes and anomalous situations like this...note that we have experienced this situation on a few occassions in the last decade and it is always caught. And, as you can see, our wonderful members would never stand for imperfections.

Cheers!
