Hello forum members & guests,
The forums have been pretty busy for about 18 months now and with that comes differing opinions on how things should be run. We have been listening and would like to address some of the issues that have been at the top of mind lately. I encourage EVERYONE to read this post:
RULES:
LISTEN TO MODERATORS! – Moderators have a tough job, please respect them. Their job is to keep the forums organized, orderly and everyone on topic. While it is perfectly fine to have a differing opinion about hockey than a moderator, you will however, need to abide by the moderator’s wishes when it comes to the guidelines of the forums. If you feel there is a problem about the way they have handled something please email me at admin @ pickuphockey.com. DO NOT DEBATE IT WITHIN THE TOPIC!
Moderators are the law!
RESPECT! - Please respect your fellow members. Follow the Golden Rule and treat others as you would like to be treated. Personal attacks are not tolerated. Offending content will be removed and a warning will be issued. Repeat offenses can lead to a site ban.
SPAM POSTING – We do not tolerate spam posting. When we see it we will remove it and take further action where applicable. If you notice it, DO NOT REPLY to it. Replying only serves to keep the post active. We want them to go away so please ignore it. This way if it does not get caught by a moderator it will fade away. We are looking into other methods of controlling it.
OFFENSIVE MATERIAL - The posting of profane, pornographic, or any other generally offensive material is strictly prohibited.
STAY ON TOPIC - With thousands of topics, keeping on topic is critical. Obviously topic evolution is normal, but keep the original subject as a guiding light to your comments. Feel free to start a new topic if you feel it's straying too far. You may be advised by the moderators to do so. If so, see the first rule above.
GUIDELINES:
SEARCH, SPELLCHECK & SUBJECT – Before posting a new topic do a quick search to see if it already exists. There is a search function just above the forum category list. If the subject doesn’t exist or is very old and worthy of a new debate then, go ahead and set it up. Remember, if a moderator finds a recent duplicate topic they may lock yours but will (in most cases) try to include a link to the similar topic for everyone’s convenience. Please spell check as best as you can. We will not beat you down if you have made mistakes but please take pride in your post and the forums. DO NOT USE “texting” short forms. PLEASE be sure that your title is descriptive and that you have placed the topic in the correct forum.
MAKE YOUR POSTS WORTHWHILE - Instead of typing 'I Agree', 'Yup' or adding a few emoticons, post a thoughtful and reasoned response. Please bring value to your post/reply by adding something new to the conversation. Support your thoughts with further information, facts, perspective. If your thought does not ADD VALUE then please do not post it. We are having discussions, not chats. THINK QUALITY! Ask yourself, "Does my post add value?".
JUST LET IT FADE AWAY - If you simply don’t like a topic, then don’t reply to it. If enough people don’t like it, it will just fade away. Don’t tell the person that you think it is “stupid” or words to that effect. Please just let it go. If you don’t understand a topic or it is not really clear. Simply, be polite and ask the owner to explain what they mean. If one person has already asked for clarification then please don’t ask again. We don’t need 6 people asking the same thing. If they do not come back and fix it or clarify their point then just let the topic fade away. Or a Moderator will remove it after giving them time to correct it.
DO NOT PIMP YOUR POSTS IN OTHER TOPICS – Please do not ask people to go check out your topic when you are within other topics. If people want to see what you have written then they will go on their own. Forum topics are by their very nature "Survival of the fittest" This is why subject content is so important! Of course there are exceptions but they should be related closely to the topic at hand.
DO NOT DOUBLE POST - Simply log in and edit your previous post if you are posting immediately after your last one. If some time has gone by or others have posted then that's ok.
DO NOT PLAGIARISE - Defined at Dictionary.com as; a) "Literary theft. Plagiarism occurs when a writer duplicates another writer's language or ideas and then calls the work his or her own. Copyright laws protect writers' words as their legal property. To avoid the charge of plagiarism, writers take care to credit those from whom they borrow and quote." b) "The act of taking the writings of another person and passing them off as one's own. The fraudulence is closely related to forgery and piracy-practices generally in violation of copyright laws." This is not something you want to be known for, shameful!
NOTES:
MEMBER RANKS – Yes, this is a hot button issue and for the time being we have reinstated the member ranks with some changes. We have adjusted the # of posts to reach rank milestones:
Top Prospect: 0-249 Rookie: 250-499 PickupHockey Pro: 500-999 PickupHockey Veteran: 1000-2499 PickupHockey All-Star: 2500-4999 PickupHockey Legend: 5000+
Please DO NOT post to increase your rank; these will be removed. Please DO NOT make announcements about how many posts you have; these will be removed. Please DO NOT post celebratory posts when you reach milestones; these will be removed (Unless purely about hockey) Please DO NOT post comments about how many posts others have; these will be removed. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, please DO NOT post complaints about other people posting comments about an amount of posts! Yes, it really does happen! Just leave it alone and let the moderators deal with it. IF you debate it, it just makes the moderator’s job that much more difficult.
ANONYMOUS POSTING – This will stay for the time being. Many of our strongest posters originated as guests. We recognize that from time to time a guest may throw out a completely offside post/reply but members have been known to do it occassionally too In either case, just ignore it; please do not turn the whole topic into a discussion about that particular reply. Should the balance tip into the negative side, we will revisit it.
Please also take another minute to read these: http://www.pickuphockey.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=609 http://www.pickuphockey.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=608
Thanks!

Sorry Saku. But you can celebrate it with a huge hockey post that will get everyone thinking and commenting. Yes, not as many pats on the back, but a good hockey conversation is its own reward. |

Thanks for the recap admin. All is good but I agree that the member milestones are wicked high.
also for spam can you add a feature that doesn't allow new memebrs to post links or pics or whatever until they reach a certain number of posts, say 100 or so? I know this site hasn't been bad for spam posts but as we have gotten more popular it has increased a little. its probaly normal. maybe this would help. |

Nice Admin, way to keep everythinh running smoothly on this awsome site. I like that you are keeping guest posting. Some guests are really intelligent and make worthwhile contributions.

Thanks for the feedback Canucks Man. I hear what you are saying and I suggest that the rank name shouldn't matter. We are all using the same ranking system and therefore we are still at the same level in relationship to everyone else. So actually you did not drop anywhere. Your good name is intact and we can still see that you have committed 910 good posts. The reason for spreading out the ranks is so that we are not focused on status and talking about ranks everyday. We have people becoming Veterans in 6 weeks! There is nothing Veteran about that. To become a Veteran, All-Star or even a Legend should take commitment of more than a couple months. |

My only concern is that people will start posting random things because the rank is so high. Just a thought...

If they do it would be no worse than it has been up until now. Besides, other than this particular posting, the ranks are not listed in the forums so they won't know when the next milestone is. |

I think the new ranks are fine. If you're going to be a Veteran or above, you should have to work for it, and before we weren't always doing that. This way we'll have to. |

Thanks admin, I'm glad that these issues have been reiterated as some of them were getting to be quite problematic. All I can ask of the members from my side is that you all take this comments and guidelines seriously, and not just as some omnipotent being passing along the Forum's commandments. This might sound corny, but the Forum is only as good as its members, and if each one of you spends an extra 15 seconds looking over your posts; making sure they're relevant, thought out and in the right place, then it makes my job a whole lot easier and it makes the Forum a much better place to talk hockey, which is what it's for.
Allow me to continue my post as a member for a second, and not as a moderator:
I think this whole issue with ranks is absurd. I am completely against them in the first place so you guys should feel lucky that they are still in place. My point is that this place is for hockey discussion, and nothing else really. When I reply to someone's post, I don't verify what rank they are to assess their "credibility" in order to format my post accordingly. They are not in any way representations of the extent of your hockey knowledge, in fact they mean nothing at all. They are not things you "have to work for", they should not be goals period. Being a "Veteran" doesn't mean that your posts are "better" than a "Rookie"'s, all it says is that you've posted more, which is reflected in your amount of posts anyways.
Please, do me a favour and don't even bother looking at your rank or amount of posts because they mean nothing. I am the most prominent member of the Forum (don't mean that in a cocky way or anything) and I am not even near some of the ranks that the admin set. Just focus on creating and maintaining good quality discussion and whatever credibility you seek will not be earned by the quantity of posts you make, but by the objectivity, pertinence and interest you convey. |

hey man you could do what I did , if you have Firefox you can download plugging that give you a spell check on everything you write on the internet ''like on this site for instance'' I know it's not perfect but it can help.
And by the way thanx Admin, great job with this site the rank and everything.

I just wanted to throw something out to everyone, especially those new members and guests to the site. Using the "ACTIVE TOPICS" is a very valuable tool. It saves us moderators from having to deal with so many new topics. There is no reason there had to be 3 totally separate topics on Luongo's stats from Saturday NIght. So please do the following:
1) Take a look using the "ACTIVE TOPICS" to see if the topic you want to talk about already has a thread started.
2) If it's not in active topics, take a quick look through the forum you figure it will be in. If there isn't a topic there, then make a new thread.
3) Please don't make a topic that should actually be an e-mail to admin.
Thanks!
If you are under the age of 15, please do some research before you make a post about anything pre-1997. |

Can you make another forum topic for concepts? If you make an NHL jersey or custumize a logo and want to post it you can just post it in there, that sorda thing. I think it will make a great addition to the web site, I have a few templates for jerseys that I could post for people if you do make this.

Hey Admin, I 'red-ed' them I just thought it was funny that you spelled 'read' wrong in a post about posting guidelines. Haha.
Hey, one spelling mistake in an entire essay is not bad! Thanks Alex, fixed! |

I wanted to make a post on here to bring it back into the active topics. I would encourage all participants to read the rules above again.
Over the past week or so, there have been a few members(I won't name names but I think you and everyone else knows who you are) that are posting one line posts and basically using the forum as a chat room. It would be greatly appreciated if this could stop. Post something with substance, not one line statements or questions.
Admin, any sage words of wisdom here?????

If your topic isn't a user poll it should be posted in the relevant forum not the User Polls forum. If you select the All Forums folder you will see all of the different forums available. Choose which one suits your topic and post in that forum.

Awesome response to the spam question. Go spambot gooooo! Really why do these programs exist.
BTW, if you want people to read these rules (read them for first time today and have been posting for 2years) why do you not have guest posters have to check yes, in a column which the rules are listed prior to posting there response or topic. Just a thought. |

Why do "guests" get to post over and over again? after one "guest" post they should be forced to create a profile, from my experience a lot of the rule breaking i've seen is by "guests" |

Hi Shellac, thanks for signing up. I hear what you are saying but actually rules are broken by guests and members both. The good news is that a large portion of our guests that post more than a few times actually set up accounts. |

Has this changed, because I have noticed that some pros have less posts than 500 and some rookies who have less than 250.
There was once a license plate in Toronto that abbreviated "Go Leafs" it read "Golfs". |
