I watched the Blackhawks vs. Redwings game today. midway through the second period Crawford made an excellent glove save, something that Fleury, the goalie I see the most, is not really all that great at. Who do you think is todays best with the glove? the best ever?

Did you hear about the retired proctologist? He spent 40 years saying "what's a place like this doing in a girl like you?"

Currently Pekka Rinne. Unbelievable glove hand. I would say likely the best ever too.

I'm not sure who's the best with the "catch glove," but Stamkos is definitely the best with the "shoot stick!" :)

Best all time from what I saw: Patrick Roy.

Best right now? Very tough, no one stands out really above many of the top ten goalies . . . I mean, Lundqvist has a great glove, but I wouldn't say exceptional. Same with the aforementioned Rinne.

But Roy . . . I saw him save games, while on his back or flopping a bit out of position, and absolutely know somehow where the puck was going from a shot in close and saving it with a lightning fast glove.

I know I recently bashed Grant Fuhr in another thread but that guy had one of the sickest glove hands in the history of the NHL. It's like he invented that move where the goalie went into the splits and snagged the puck out of the air with his glove hand.

Grant Fuhr's glove was sick but I wouldn't fault anyone for saying Patrick Roy was the best either.

LOL, that would be as opposed to the glove with the blocker

Watching Brodeur he seems to give the shooter glove side to all shooters but normally doesn't get beat there

100% agree he is unreal and likely doesn't get as much credit as he should.

That about sums it up.

Re: Grant Fuhr - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vXA6eMBVpA < from about the 1:55 mark is "vintage" Fuhr - knee down, leg out, glove high. :D

And speaking of Roy, I've always thought the "wink" was awesome (and a great bit of camera work too) > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w74qfL4U6h4

Neat video footage of Grant Fuhr. I forgot that Grant Fuhr caught with his right hand.

Over 90% of NHL goalies catch with their left hand. Which means that over 90% of goalies shoot left.

It kinda makes sense, because most people are right-handed. And if you throw right-handed, you usually catch with your left hand.

And most people learn to throw before they learn to use a hockey stick, even future NHLers!

Getting back to being a right-hand catching goalie, I wonder if coaches prep their players whenever they play such a goalie? When you're shooting at the net, you're expecting a blocker or glove to be on a certain side (90% of the time), so your shot choices and openings change accordingly.

Notwithstanding the above though, I'm pretty sure players figure things out very quickly when they're facing a goalie who catches with his right hand. When you're flying down the right hand side of the ice for example, and you see a goalie with his glove covering the left-hand side of net (and blocker on the short side), you know you're facing Jonas Hiller, Thomas Vokoun or Jose Theodore, to name three of only six NHL goalies who catch with their right hand!

I never played in the NHL, but when I played hockey, I never even thought about (or really noticed) which way a goalie shot, or more relevantly, whether he caught with his right hand or left hand.

Maybe all the goalies I faced caught with their left hand? Or maybe my lack of attention to such details (amongst other factors) explains why I never made it to the NHL! :)

that's right up there with Jim Marshall running 70 yards the wrong way with a recovered fumble to score a saftey for the opponents
