Anyone see the Franzen incident at the Preds bench? Just saw a brief clip on a highlight which they may show more of after these darn commercials, but it looked like a Preds player on their bench had Franzen's jersey in his grasp and tugged on it. Franzen appeared to turn around and jab his stick at someone on the bench. Didn't see if it made contact, but surely this will be reviewed?

This is arguably the nastiest bunch of first round series i've ever seen! Look at the incidents so far!

NYR / Ott - Carkner on Boyle and Hagelin on Alfredsson
Phi / Pit - Asham on Schenn, Crosby and Giroux scrapping, Letang and Timmonen booted for scrapping, plus many more and likely many more to come!
Van / LA - Bitz on Clifford and sorry to say, if the Canucks fall behind tonight, likely more ugliness!
Pho / Chi - Shaw's headshot to Smith
Nash / Det - Weber's "WWE-like" headslam of Z

I'm sure there are many more!!! It's really looking ugly and so much undisciplined play, and the Bruins haven't even gotten involved yet really (or am i missing something good from that series?).

No that series is by far the most boring to watch so far.

Alex - The Bruins series had the head shot when the glass fell in game one. Ovie got knocked a couple times in the 1st game as well...but all clean.

All in all this has been at times one of the most exciting 1st rounds in recent history (so far) and at times one of the most dirties/ugliest as well.

I missed both early games today so I can't comment on the Frazen incident, post a replay if you find one

Lol. Who'd have thought the worst head shot thus far in that Bruins series would be a result of the fans?

They didn't show any more on the Franzen thing and i couldn't see anything online yet. Maybe he didn't actually jab at them but it looked like it from the short clip i saw? I'll see if i can find it somewhere but if it was bad enough, surely it will be discussed and shared somewhere!

And many, many more after today's game! James Neal is gonna get his frickin' head taken off the next game after his hits on Couturier and Giroux. Crosby might be a target, too. And, of course Adams. Who pulls ANY dude's hair, never mind Scott Hartnell's? Really? Great game, though. One of the best I've seen. About 150 PIMs and 12 goals.

The Oil WILL make the playoffs in 2013.

This is the craziest first round I've seen so far for sure. There was also that jab that the guy from St Louis gave while the other one was down helpless. Dont remember the names.

I've seen stuff like that in one or two matchup like Detroit - Colorado and Boston - Montreal or Montreal - Quebec. But this here is from every series.

Plus the away teams seems to win all the time and most games are going to overtime.

This first round is mind blowing and I'm sure the NHL will adress this somehow. I think Shanahan passing on some suspensions is now getting back to him.

NJ - Florida in a few minutes I love playoff hockey.

Did the James Neal stuff and the hair pulling happen in the 3rd. I watched most of the first two periods but missed the 3rd. I don't doubt i missed some more nasty stuff considering the game and series scores!

Yeah. The real crazy stuff happened in the last five minutes of the game.

Alot of the nastiness is coming from desperation. Franzen knows NSH is beating them up and is trying to change the flow of the series before he ends up on the golf course.

Other than a few plays by Datsyuk the Wings have been terrible so far and they know it. I ended up with alot of Preds in my playoff pool so i have been watching their games.

Weber should have gotten suspended for his headshot on Zetterburg, although he did hit Weber from behind just before and then Weber reacted. It was expected that Bert would eat a few punches for his team fighting Weber. Good series, Wings can get into this series and put the pressure back on NSH with a win tomorrow!

Go Sens!

There is a theory out there that all these shenanigans are the fallout from the Stanley Cup final last year. Many teams try to emulate the past cup winners style of play. Last year Boston played a bang and crash, beat em in the alley style. A lot of the bigger teams are running smaller teams out of the rink with this abrasive style. So far in the first round the bigger, meaner teams have had more success versus the smaller teams.

Phi is a bigger, more physical team than Pit with guys like Hartnell, Schenn, Rinaldo, Simmonds. They're dismantling Pit right now
SJ took home ice away from STL. STL is a much smaller team compared to SJ and SJ has been on the instigating end a lot of the time in that series
Van is getting demolished by LA who are not that big but are bigger, tougher, and meaner than the nucks
NSH is taking it to DET right now by going after the Red Wings stars (Gaustad on Datsyuk in gm 1, Weber on Zetterberg gm 1, Legwand on Franzen, gm 3)

With so many series being lead or dominated by bigger teams, it points to a trend. The bigger teams are outmuscling and bullying the smaller teams becasue they have realized the refs are not going to punish them for all their shenanigans. If this keeps up, the two teams in the cup final are going to be beat to hell. The cup final will look like Super Smash Bros, and it will only go downhill as the years go on. Something needs to be done to curb all this crap. I'm not against fighting and physical play but it's getting absolutely ridiculous. Cheapshots left and right, suspensions every day, controversial hits in every game. The NHL is moving back 30 years in these playoffs and I don't think its a good direction to be going in.

More than last year's cup final setting a trend, I think that this is the reason things are so nasty this year. The NHL was pretty clear as the season wound up that they were starting to put the whistles away more and more and let the players decide the outcome on the ice. They basically gave players free reign to do whatever they want. I like that they want the game to be more physical in the playoffs, but they might have gone overboard.

I am all for letting the skilled guy's deciding the game, but some of the nastyiness has added lots of water cooler talk to this season. Here's me wishing all the teams put the cheap plays away and nobody has to dress a goon for the rest of the playoffs. However I will bet anybody my Avatar for the playoffs a goon dresses for at least 2 games a series for at least half the teams. I absolutely hate when a series is decided by who is not playing for the losing team due to injuries resulting from illegal plays.

Here's a link to a story where Shanahan explains some of the suspensions:

http://www.thestar.com/sports/hockey/nhl/article/1162744--nhl-playoffs-brendan-shanahan-explains-suspensions

It does seem like the result of the action is given more weight than the action itself.

I somewhat agree with the whole "emulating the cup winner", we've certainly seen it before.

But to your remark about San Jose being a lot bigger than St. Louis?

Hunh?
St. Louis has combined probably the three biggest centes in the league in Backes, Arnott and Berglund. Then you have additional size and toughness in Stewart, Langenbrunner, Huskins, Cole . . . and even their small guys like Shattenkirk play a tough, gritty style.

I get it that San Jose has Thornton, Marleau, Clowe, Handzus, and Burns and Murray on the blueline . . . sure, they are a very big team, I agree. But I wouldn't really put them above St. Louis in this case.

You're right, St Louis is a big hockey team. I guess what i'm trying to say is throughout San Jose's lineup there is size, and they use it more that St. Louis and its up and down their lineup with guys like Winnick, Vlasic, Demers, Winchester, and Braun. Combined with a few relatively small Blues defence: Russell, Shattenkirk, its safe to say the Sharks forwards are a lot bigger than a few key Blues dmen. While the Blues forwards don't have such a distinct advantage over the Sharks D
