I am also scratching my head about the timing of his anouncement - right before the finals ?? If you haven't played in over a year, couldn't you just wait 2 more weeks for the end of the season? Seems like a self-serving time to release this decision.

I think he just figured out he can't do it anymore so he did it now, weird time though to retire right before the finals but all in all we'll miss him.

Fair enough, perhaps I was a little harsh and skeptical. He was one of the top stars of this era. Good Bye to Leetch.

It's got nothing to do with the cap.... He's had a fabulous career.. but it's certainly time for him to move on...

If the salary cap has nothing to do with his retirement, then why did not even one of the 30 NHL teams sign him this year?

His salary was 4mil+...thats why...
