Should Messier enter the Hockey Hall of Fame as an Oiler or a Ranger?

I am voting Edmonton with my heart. Reason being is that I was at the Oilers first home game after they last won the Cup. Before the game, Messier came skating out with the Cup over his head. Exactly the same way he did during his Jersey Retirement in Edmonton this year.
Although I think he was more impactful and important to the Rangers, his play in Edmonton was phenomenal. And, it was pretty much his determination that won the Cup for the Oil in 90.
He also played 12 seasons with the Oilers compared to 10 with the Rangers.
I vote Edmonton!

Everything Beans just said is what I think. You won't get as much respect if you play with the Great One but he was a good reason for the teams success(So I hear, Didn't really see it)
But the year I was born when Messier won the cup for the rangers on June 14th the day after I was born everyone in New York loved him.
But from what I hear his carrer was in Edmonton. So I say Edmonton. |

Did you hear when he was on next question on off the record? He was asked when he thought Vancouver would retire his jersey. He cracked up laughing and said, "Next Question."

Ranger he made a bigger impact on their franchise edmonton could have still easily have won those cups without his remarkble play.

12 years in Edmonton = and five cups, 10 in NY = one cup. Don't forget two of those Edmonton cups came after 99 left.

| They only won 1 without 99, messier was just lucky to win with the Rangers. Vancouver should have won. |

The only Cup Edmonton won without Gretzky was in 1990, that makes one Cup for Messier without Gretzky in Edmonton...

I guess the wording. It sounded like he meant he was being inducted as either an Oiler or a Ranger. Ultimately you enter the HHOF as a great hockey player. Whether it was with one team you played with or several. Which jersey you wear while being inducted is not all that important. Except to some fans I guess.
If i were to pick I'd say the Rangers as that is where he established his legend.

I would say he established his legend in 1990. Everyone counted out the Oilers without Gretzky. Mess proved them wrong.
But, I can also see the point of NYR. For sure he got a lot more media as a Ranger than as an Oiler.

Hi Willus, I'm not so sure I agree with this. I know you are probably refering to his famous brash call "we will win!" (or whatever the words were) which made him a kind of a demi-prophet, but his legend was established long before that in wicked-cold Edmonton. And even if his legendary status was created equally in both locations, statistically in ALL departments he dominated in Edmonton. Not only as their leader but in multiple roles throughout his career there. Admittedly he was an "actively playing" legend only in New York, but that was really just a symptom of time. |

Coldest Day on Record in Edmonton, -49.4 C (-54.9 F) and that was without any wind chill.
It is not uncommon to have -45 C wind chill.
And consider that the nearest body of water from Edmonton is a couple thousand miles at least.
There is not another "City" further north that Edmonton in North America. And what I mean by City is over 100,000 people.

Ya, ok PuckNuts. Good Point. But Edmonton is still 5 times bigger than Anchorage.
Let me rephrase.
Edmonton is the furthest Northern NHL City.

Hey Leigh,
It's debatable for sure. I said NY because it was a fresh start for him. In Edmonton he was always under Gretzky's shadow. But there was that cup win in Edmonton without Gretzky. But I still think his "Legend" came about in NY and a lot of it had to do with his guarantee that they would win. Then he basicaly won that game himself with a hat trick. That's how legends are made.

I'd say Edmonton because he won five cups there, true he always was on the second line in edmonton until the gretzky trade, but the 1990 cup proves he had what it takes to lead a team, if you ask me 1990 is when he established his legend
what do Calgary and a tea bag have in common- they're both only good for one cup |
