In a different thread it was brought up about "One Line" teams such as Tampa Bay. TB did win a Cup in 2004 with primarily one line of offensive stars. Another team that almost won the Cup with primarily one line was the 93 Kings with Gretzky. Posted below are the rosters of the 04 Lightning, the 04 Flames(who TB beat for the Cup), the 93 Kings, and the 93 Canadiens who beat LA.
Considering the teams in question and the teams they faced in the finals the questions are:
Do you think the TB team that won was a "one line" team?
and
Between the 04 Lightning and the 93 Kings, which was the "more complete" of the two teams?

For Tampa I see a goalie who was hot, a couple of decent or better defensemen and two solid forward lines, one of which was tops in the league at the time.
For LA I see a goalie who was playing well, a couple of decent, young defensemen in Blake and Sydor and two solid forward lines one of which was the best in the league that year.
I'm going to call that one a draw.
And as I said in the other thread, LA was better than most give them credit for. That's a pretty decent roster.

Just wondering, Beans, how was it determined the order in which these players were listed? I'm not implying anything, just interested. |

If I remember correctly, I went onto hockeydb.com and went to the team roster for the year. I copied into excel and sorted out the players that had 0 playoff games for that team. Then I think I sorted it by position and then threw the goalies on the bottom.

Beans, were you a little surprised at the roster for LA after you looked it up? It's a pretty solid team.

Not Really Willus. The only ones I forgot were on that team were Sydor and Blake. However, that was pretty early in both of their careers, so they were far from developed.
After looking at both rosters I would put my money on the Kings in this one. Gretz had 40 points that playoff series and was playing most of the time with Sanstrom and Robitaille (or was Kurri there too. I remember Kurri playing with Carson on the 2nd line), who both signifiantly benefitted from WG. But, the LA defense was better than TB's. The goalie match up goes to TB.
What actually surprised me the most is that on paper, the LA teams looks stronger than the Montreal team. Roy totally deserved that Conn Smythe because Mont didn't have the firepower to win it on their own.

It is difficult to rate the teams against each other if you do not do the research on the players to find out if they are starting a career, in the middle, or in their twilight.
Some of us see a players name and associate him with a great career, when in 1993 (for example) he was just starting out and was not a star in the league as of yet.
Imagine this same conversation in ten years and we look at the Lightnibg team of 2004, and say wow that team was full of stars...
