Poll Question:
With the 07-08 season approaching, many of us hockey fanatics are starting our hockey pools soon, I think that many people would take Sidney Crosby first overall if they wanted to pick a top scorer. If so, who would you take second?

| Thornton 1st, Jagr 2nd, he had a great year scoring 96 points now with additions of Gomez and Drury he will have better linemates and all the attention wont be on him. |

| hmmmmm....Thornton, Iginla, Lecavalier or Heatley. My heart is with Iginla, I think he's good for 110 points if he plays the full season. Having said that, Thornton is probably good for 125. It would be a tough call but I'd probably go with Thornton because I'm expecting massive things out of SJS this season. |

I think if you had a chance to get any of those players as your first pick you are doing ok. I would more than likely take Thorton ahead of Crosby. But that's just me. I think this is a breaker year for Crosby. Lead his team to the playoffs, won all the awards. He might have a little pressure to do better. Not saying he won't, but he might not. Thorton is a rock. 115-125 points pretty much for sure.

It all depends on how you run your pool.
In the pool that I run we give bonus points for hat tricks, 5 points for a forward hat trick, and D-men get 10 bonus points.
So when I sellect my players I would go with Heatley, or Lecavalier...
I don't necessarily agree with everything I say.

Devon you went with a really young team. To me if your young players can come out you have a good chance. Sascha has a good team in my mind, if Gaborik and Havlat play whole seasons he has a good shot.

Crosby will score 140 points at least.
Thornton - 120-125.
Lecavalier 120.
Heatley will challenge 60 goals, but be around 100.
Ovechkin will hurt his little toe and move back to Russia. Before he does that, he'll get 105 points.
Jagr will be below 100.
Beans...dude....not taking Crosby first is crazy. Did you hold a draft in 1984, and not take Gretzky first? Perhaps instead, you went with Bernie Federko, or that hot new youngster, Brian Lawton! |

All I am saying is that the spread between Crosby and the rest is not that much. One injury or one cold streak for 5+ games is the difference in the Art Ross Trophy. In the mid-80's, Gretzky was worth literally 2 other top 10 players in scoring. Crosby is not that. 1984-85, Gretzky had 208 points, 7th-10th had 105 or less and only 1 player was within 75 points. 06-07 Crosby had 120 points, the same as the 73rd and 74th players, and 144 players were within 75 points. Your comparison is not even close.
Most pools through the 80's had thier own Gretzky rule. Basically, he's not allowed to be picked.
In my pool experience, it's not your first few picks that win it. There are only about 10 guys in the league that can legitimately score 100+ points. In most drafts, you will get one of them. They are to keep pace. It's the mid to late round picks that will win it. That sleeper that should get 50-60 points that gets 70-80. A couple of those win the draft, not your first pick.
And, friendly bet says that Crosby doesn't get 140 points.

I found in the pool I run the best way to balance out the top picks was to add 5 points for a hat trick for the forwards, and then 10 points for a defenseman hat trick.
Not all the top players are goal scorers, then again not all the top goal scorers are top point getters.
This tends to keep every one from just taking the next best point player on the NHL stats list.
A player like Thornton who finished second last season in scoring was not selected until the 6 th pick.
By the way this year I had first pick, and I selected Crosby. Others on my team are, Ovechkin, Kovalchuck, Marion Hossa, Hejduk, and Jason Blake...

Beans, I'll take that bet. Crosby was headed for 140 last year until a broken foot slowed him in the last few weeks. Even though he's had a bad start by his standards (he's still averaging a point a game), not to mention he is forced to play with Gonchar the sloth on the powerplay, he will have 42 goals and 102 assists before it is all said and done. Of course, he could tear an ACL tomorrow and end up with 4 points, I don't know.
You are right about the first few rounds not meaning much, though. Most drafts are won in the middle of the order and even by some of the lower picks (I took Eric Staal in the last round two years ago and walked away with the prize). |

I dunno a goalie would be a good first pick if you thought he was going to have a good season, or his team was.
Last year someone in my draft took Martin Brodeur first round and Brodeur finished with alot of points. The person in my draft had an advantage since no goalie came close to how many points his had. |

Hm. 2nd overall. I'd have to go with Thornton. Seeing him thus far this season may have changed that. But, it would have been Thornton. He's almost a guaruntee to finish top 5 in points. If not top 2. Maybe not this year, after seeing his start. But, I'd have thought it at the first of the season.

Thornton's off to a slow start but like many years past he has picked it up later in the season mainly after the all-star brake.
He is always great to have on your team in a pool because you never know when he will have that breakout game and get you something like 4 or 5 points.
