Poll Question:
Of the following players that captained Stanley Cup teams, which was the best leader?

Kipper for Lundqvist?

Choices:

Yvan Cournoyer (MTL ''76 ''77 ''78 ''79)
Wayne Gretzky (EDM ''84, ''85, ''87, ''88)
Mark Messier (EDM ''90; NYR ''94)
Mario Lemieux (PIT ''91 ''92)
Scott Stevens (NJD ''95 ''00 ''03)
Joe Sakic (COL ''96 ''01)
Steve Yzerman (DET ''97 ''98 ''02)

Mark Messier was the definition of leader.

What Gretzky did on the scoresheet, he did by simply being Mark Messier. The passion was just there from the dog days of December to the tiring cup runs that went till March.

That was his reason to play the game: win the cup.

Who else actually JUMPED like he did when he got that cup in 94? Who else singlehandedly made his team into a contender day in day out?

The vivid images of his leadership are just there. Him saying 'we WILL win game 6.' Leader = Mark Messier. The best captain to play the game.

Kipper for Lundqvist?

I've gotta say Messier too. He was a great leader and wasn't exactly on his own but he carried a lot of the load.

Stevens comes in second for me. Brodeur was arguably better than him though.

Fly hasn't been around for the past week. I'm sure he'd be into this one.

Stevens wasn't second best, it was probably Yzerman.

Ellis or Mason?

Well Stevens was captain for more. But it's true, Stevie Y led by example. He was a team player like no other. He even has that over Messier.

What about Maurice Richard, 4 Cups with Montreal while he was captain, I am sure he led by example...

I don't necessarily agree with everything I say.
