What head protection should be mandated to avoid further serious injuries?

I would say full cage but you never know how that can affect the performance of a player. It can really get on your nerves, personally I have become more aware of it lately and nearly go cross eyed at the intertwining wire. The best would be a clear, full face visor. Players should be minimizing the risk as best they can.

So I'm going to tell a little story now....a few weeks ago a girl in Halifax was playing on a jungle gym when her scarf got tangled up in it and she almost hung herself to death. Now the Halifax school board is looking into banning scrafs.
I know, I know that's just crazy talk. You can't ban scarves because of a freak accident!!!!
Now I'm sure everyone picked up the point I was trying to make, but just in case it was missed I'll clarify.
Yes the Zednik incident was unfortunate, but there is no reason in the world to force anyone to wear a full cage or neck deflectors(what the hell is a neck deflector?). These are grown adults who are capable of making decisions for themselves. And that's how it should remain, they're own decsion. One of these days a butt end of a stick will get stuck in someones mask and break their neck and next thing you know we'll be playing with rubber sticks and sponge pucks to cut down on high sticks and injuries from getting hit with the puck. Oh yes, while we're at it we should outlaw slap shots and shots above the knee. Safety first as they say.... |

Outlawing scarves is a big loss to the majority of people. Making clear full cage visors mandatory is not. Within reasonable perameters, all measues should be taken to ensure the safety of the players. There really is no reason not to, and in the end it is the players like Zednik who have to pay for it.
No sponge pucks. But full cage visors, heck, why not?

Oh great, now everyone can be a goalie. The game has gotten too impersonal as it is. Lets not over react to this thing. It was a fluke accident in a game that is played by very wealthy people. It is a dangerous sport and the rewards are high. Every player knows the risks involved and play voluntarily. They have a choice as to weather they wear shields etc. Life is always better when we have our own choices. Lets leave it at that. I often wonder about how deprived children are today because they can't sleep in the back window of the family sedan like we used to on the way to Grandma's in Florida. |

This is precisely how I feel about this. The last slashed throat in the NHL was 20 years ago. Let grown ups be grown ups and decide for themselves. The players are protected well enough as is. |

The likelyhood of a skate to the throat is rare. Usings some crude math, you can consider that 30 teams, 82 games each, 60 minutes/game. That works out to be 147,600 minutes of hockey per year. Based on 2 situations in 20 years, that works out to the possibility of this type of injury happening to be once every 1,476,000 minutes. Or, once every 24,600 games. Doesn't sound to me that there is even a requirement for protection against this kind of injury. Full Face cages is extreme.
The other thing with that, and one thing that I fault minor hockey on(I'm sure I'll get killed for this comment), is the lack of respect towards players using full face shields. Who cares how high a stick is if they guy has a full cage, it's not like they would get hurt.
Too much protective equipment removes a certain level of respect that the players have for each other. Other than Chris Simon, no player in my lifetime has tried to injure any other with a skate (as far as I can remember). |

I strongly disagree with full cages. There really is no need for them, visors I am ok with. Neck protectors also sshouldn't be needed. Like the math Beans did (whcih was very impressive) it shows how rare a skate to the throat will be, the next incident of this happening will not be for a very long time, it is good to be cautious, but lets not over do it.
