Guys, recently I have been somewhat disturbed by the multiple, grammatically incorrect, illogically thought out and degrading (to the site) posts and topics being made that are simply bringing down the squeaky clean image of this site.
For example:
Number One Too Many NHL Teams, posted by bentrock2 http://www.pickuphockey.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3816
I started the exact same poll earlier this month and it was even featured. http://www.pickuphockey.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3760
Why start a new one?
Number Two Hardest shot: by Guest2331 http://www.pickuphockey.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3768 Not a bad idea, but the choices follow no apparent logic, the spelling is messed, and it has been posted elsewhere.
Number Three Best stickhandler: Guest 2285 http://www.pickuphockey.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3762 Aside from having multiple topics like this one, the grammar is messed, the choices seem random, the same guest posts right underneath ''Stupid post Guest2285'', referring to himself -- I mean guys, come on!
Number Four Better futures: guest 2328 http://www.pickuphockey.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3775 Not a bad idea. However, there are only two choices, and no one took the time and bothered to answer because the guest clearly did not think out what he posted, just copied the question from The Score as Irvine pointed out.
I would like to mention that alot of the topics could be good with a little care.
Number Five Greatest player ever: guest 2330+2331 http://www.pickuphockey.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3767 http://www.pickuphockey.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3741
We already have a thread in which Beans, Willus, Andyhack and many other notables posted. Why not just do research and throw in your input there? We are wasting cyberspace over here boys!
There are actually so many more examples. By the way, all those I mentioned are not even locked! I shudder to think what lurks inside the threads of the locked topics!
Guys, maybe it is because this is one of my pet peeves, but PLEASE try and keep everything neat, tidy, logical, organized and free of grammar or spelling errors.
I would also like to ask, if possible, if we could have some way of monitoring the 'New Topic' threads that people start. Maybe like they need to be approved by admin before they go on, or you have to be a member (since guests tend to post random things... I have seen pornography, single sentences such as 'Habs Suck' and 'Hockey players score goals' and things like this.) Also, maybe the locked topics should be deleted?
Just a thought. Interested to hear from all of you

Well Mr.Alex the Moderator. Oh wait, are you the moderator? I have full confidence that Admin and the Moderators will deal with these issues. Not your thing to worry about it. And if you despise those topics so much do what I do, don't open them, or does that go against your "I have to post in every topic"?
Alex all I'm trying to say is, let the moderators and Admin deal with this. |

Is there a point to this? Really, Alex isn't a moderator. There is no reason why he should be doing this. If the mods find something wrong they will adress it, it shouldn't be "Mr. I - POST - ON - EVERYTHING."

He (Alex) joined Nov.15/07 and has over 2000 posts why do you think he made this topic. He has nothing better to do. |

Listen don't get personal here. I no longer post on everything. I am making a concentrated effort to only post in forums where I can add value. My posts per day has gone down and continues to go down with every day. I am sure we can all agree that even in my early days here I was cautious with spelling, grammar and accuracy.

16.75 Posts Per Day. If you're saying it keeps going down you must have been averaging 25 posts a day. I think it was 7.5, that was the only time my average posts per day was over 5. And that was on my first couple weeks here. I'm sorry man but you post in almost every topic. No disrespect to you man, but you're not a moderator, let the moderators deal with it. Or just do what the moderators say to do, don't post in them, because when you post in them it keeps them active, if you don't post anything in it, it will just go away like it was never there.
Edit-Also, Thornton, we need you to place your votes in the Top 20 since 93. |

I had something like 30 posts per day near the beginning. OK, I am admiting that is a lot. Obviously it is. You do not need me to admit it to validate that.
However, stop attacking me. It really is a pet peeve of mine that guests are sort of destroying the order around here. I really am trying to contribute to the site as best as I can. And I really do enjoy it. Is that not what this is about? It's not about post count as some of you are implying.
No I am not a mod. I am just trying to point out that a member of this site cares about its well-being. I aslo threw out an idea for how to solve the problem being faced. Nothing more.
EDIT: Can all the members who look at this join the PickUpHockey Cyber Cup? It only will take two minutes, I am trying to get participation from all the active members. All you need to do for now is read the intro and tell me you will join. Time is of the essence. Thanks guys, I know I can count on you This is the link: http://www.pickuphockey.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3820#51395 |

Alex makes a point here. He has had some good posts in the last month, and some good polls, which have become feature polls. I think the one thing that will probably stick to Alex's name is post count, and the excessive amount of posts he had in the start.
I think if we can see Alex with posting on 3-4 subjects a day, in only 1 post per topic, (not this 6-7 post crap in one topic), he will be much more valued on pickuphockey then he currently is.

That is true. Alex has got a lot better. Another thing that is on his reputation is those 4 posts in a row he used to do. Then he found out about the Edit button HAHA! Maybe next time Alex, just send them an e-mail about this. They're very good about responding to stuff like this. |

Alex seems like he genuinely wants to contribute; he just has to cut down on the "posting diarrhea"
For anyone that is not an admin, I think it is perfectly fine to comment, complain and suggest. No, that is NOT just the responsibility of the admins, every site personality (specifically the ones that contribute good and meaningful posts and comments) have a right. It is only fair that Alex has a say, although considering his incredible posting/comment average, a little ironic.
The site has been inundated with these stupid posts lately, by what I can only assume are children.
My suggestion to the admins? I know you guys all can't be checking and locking posts all the time, so why not instill a one or two post limit per poster? This would cut out the crap pretty effectively, I think . . .

I think it is great what he is doing to recruit members for his cyber cup game. Instead of posting in every topic he is just editing his post in topic he commented on. Great job! |

I am with Alex on this one. Sure, maybe he had "problems" with posting too much in the past but ever since i have joined, i haven't thought that he has done too bad. Not only that but his posts are usually worth reading. But lately there have been an incredible amount of useless topics and really immature and downright stupid posts that have obviously had no thought put into them. This site is rapidly losing its profesionalism and maturity and if this keeps up, the site will probably also start losing members who actually care about hockey and try and put knowledgable insights into topics. Second thing that's bothering me: THere are all these stupid polls and topics and stuff out there and you are attacking Alex for making this topic and trying to get the admin/mods attention? Give me a break. He actually want to help make this a decent site and you guys tear him apart. Each to their own but that's no way to attract semi-intelligent people who would like to have decent discussions about hockey. If this keeps up, people are gonna start leaving.

i wonder if the guest that keep showing up here are not from other boards just trying to bring this board down with bad post. like for example hf boards it's on a downward spiral with all it's bickering among it's members. maybe some of there members are trying to ruin this board.there's a reason why a lot forum sites don't let guest post. this is one of them a guess can troll, start crap, put up useless post and nothing can be done, he's a guest. can come back anytime if i'm right. members now the board can controll.i like the policy that to post you have to join, reading is open to anyone. build a good relationship among members . i always like to know who i'm talking or debating against or agreeing with.just my thoughts.

Hello Everyone.
Every year someone takes it upon themselves to point out the flaws in the boards. It is appreciated and may even be valid, but what they don't realize is that boards are living and breathing organisms made up of thousands of different personalities. Some people bring a strong point of view, some people don't. I've been told by many that our boards are some of the best. The reason they like it? If they see something they are not interested in, or think is not valuable to them...they ignore it, or they fire an email to me or the mods and let them know about it. The mods then deal with it. Problem solved. But when you post repeatedly to say that something is "dumb" all you do it serve to keep it alive longer.
Also at the beginnning and end of each NHL season when people are coming and going we get this transitionary period where the quality falters. We may be experiencing this again. When the season gets rolling it improves.
For those of you who are commenting that the boards are not good right now I'm sure that I don't need to remind you that each and everyone of you have had moderators step in and "assist" you in your forum etiquette in the past.
As for guests, they are welcome. We have had long debates over this and it was decided (and my mind has not been changed) that guests bring tremendous value to the boards (much more good than bad - remember that some members have posted a lot of trash too you know) Many of our strongest members started out as guests.
Have you read the information on the other side of these links? Please read these 3 threads on rules and guidelines word for word: http://www.pickuphockey.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2160 http://www.pickuphockey.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=609 http://www.pickuphockey.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=608
One last comment, I think that Beans, Willus and Leigh do a fine job moderating these forums. Will things be missed from time to time? Obviously yes! But it is a big volunteer job and they do it admirably. It would appear to me that we can all do our part by following the rules and respecting each other. This thread for example is a perfect demonstration of breaking some of the rules: 1) it strays way off topic, 2) It has become personal towards the original poster. 3) The original post even pointed fingers at other members.
The way to keep a clean board starts with you. Read and follow the rules, if you see something that is wrong let us know (don't post it - email us - but please think first, what doesn't have value to you, may hold value for someone else, in that case just ignore it!) And finally, learn as much as you possibly can about hockey so our content improves. |
