After months of hearing people talk about who is the best, who isn't, and who doesn't belong in the top 5, it's time to settle this the old fashioned way. That's right, I want to fight all of you!
Kidding.
Ok, list them out. Give me your top 5 goalies in the league today and why. Try to support things more than one way. What I mean is let's not lean too much towards stats or the style of play.
Who are the best?? Top 5 and rank them.
We'll let the masses decide this!

Alright folks, I am heading out of town for the week end, but I wanted to give you my top 5. I will edit my post later next week and give my rationale.
1) Martin Brodeur
2) Roberto Luongo
3) Mikka Kipprusoff
4) Henrik Lundqvist
5) Evgeni Nabokov
That's it. Those are the goalie that I (and I would think most GM's) would put in goal for their team for the upcoming season. Without going into a ton of detail about each one of them, they all have a number of things in common:
1) They all win. Period
2) They all make a ton of saves
3) They all have a great save percentage
4) They all have the ability to win a game all on their own
5) They are all experienced enough ensure some hardship through the season.
There we go. Let's dance

#1. Brodeur, dont question it I'm sick of argueing for the hands down best goalie in the league.
#2. Luongo, is an explanation nessecary?
#3. Fleury, I think he is so close to Luongo and will be the best in the league soon until Price takes over.
#4. JS Giguere, consistently awesome.
#5. Lundqvist, he has proven himself.

Lundqvist sees higher quality shots then any of these goalie's and is always the best goalie down the stretch after the all star break when its time to step up he does to a level higher then any other goalie in the league.
Roberto Luongo is big fast agile and technicly sound with a flare for the dramatic has proven himself time and time again one of the greats
J.S Giguere despite what anyone has to say about how good his team is now he has been brilliant even with one of the bottom class teams in the league he is huge and is by far has the best technique and most knowledge of the goal tending position
Ryan Miller may surprise you to have him here even i have underestimated him but he plays in a town where the talent just keeps leaving and he keeps a team that should be dead last or damn close in contention every year he has the ideal build for a NHL goalie and probaly the quickest glove hand in the league next to Roberto he is excellent at keeping his body square to the puck and rarely gives a shooter much to look at brilliance is in this kids futur and soon he will be at the top of this list.
Nabokov is just a horse pure and simple slightly small but fast as lightning and by far just the kind of goalie you know will get the job done for all 82 games if thats what you need!

Without reading any responses, here are my picks for top 5 goalies:
1. Evgeni Nabokov
- We all knew he was GOOD, but last year he really proved himself as the best in the league. With the amount of games he was able to play (and win), and how well he performed in the playoffs...he's definatly my #1
2. Henrik Lundqvist
- Vezina nominee in 2008, he still has lots of room for improvement. However, it may not seem that way on paper..
3. Marc-Andre Fleury
-Didn't exactly 'carry' his team to the finals, but you need your goaltender to be great in order to make it as far as the pens did. He certainly deserves some credit
4. Carey Price
- Alot of hype revolving around this young man. The fans in Montreal love him, however they may be giving him too much work too soon...we'll have to wait and see how he handles it
5. Chris Osgood
- What a comeback he had last year,. With the same game plan/attitude this year, you can expect an even better year from him in '09.

Why isn't anyone saying Leclaire ? He's a big goalie , he's only 25 and
he plays for a bad team . Look at his stats playing for a bad team .

part of being a great goalie is winning even if you have a poor team in front of you (lulongo) if leclaire ever got columbus in the playoffs it would be huge, but hes not there yet

Martin Brodeur
Henrik Lundqvist
Roberto Luongo
Mikka Kiprusoff
Tomas Vokoun
Vokoun is amazing, I don't like him very much for leaving Nashville, but I still have respect for his level of play. In my opinion, at least the first 3 on this list are give-ins. Vokoun had a solid season on a terrible team. He faced one of the most shot totals of any goalie and was still up at the top in save percentage, GAA and shutouts.

Even though I do not want to base this completely on stats, I wanted to share a little information.
I took a look back on the past 3 seasons for every goalie in the league. I took only goalies with more than 90 games (average at least 30 games in the past 3 seasons) and ranked them in the following catagories:
Games Played
Wins
Win %
% of games with a point (wins and OT losses)
Shots Against
Goals Against Average
Saves
Save Percentage
Shut Outs
These are (in my opinion) the important stats for a goalie.
Of all the 42 goalies who have played 90 of more games in the past 3 years, there is only one goalie who ranks in the top 5 of each of these stats:
Martin Brodeur
Brodeur was 1st in games played, wins, shutouts, 2nd is shots against and saves, 3rd in win percent, 4th in goals against average and save percentage, and 5th in games with points percentage.
Also, by using the ranks of each goalie in each catagory, each goalie rank can be found. Basically, add up all the ranks and the lower the number, the better (if that makes sense). The top 5 goalies in these catagories measured against each other are:
Martin Brodeur
Mikka Kiprusoff
Henrik Lundqvist
Roberto Luongo
G.S.Giguere.
Vokoun and Miller were very close in 6th and 7th.
A couple of other notables that were mentioned by other people :
Nabokov at 11th, Marc Andre Fleury at 19th, Pascal Leclaire at 32nd, Chris Osgood at 24th.
Price did not make the cut as he has only played 41 games.
Just something to think about! |

I'm glad someone other than me thinks Ozzy is a top goaltender in the NHL today =]
Him and Brody have been my idols growing up and remain my two fav's.
Ozzy isn't that nice of a person when you meet him from what I have heard, but I met him thanks to my neighbor who is security for Joe Louis Arena and got to go into the locker room after a game and he gave me the stick he used with his signature. It lays right above my tv in my living room =D ha.
As much as I want to put him in my top 5, I just can't.
My top goalies are ranked in order by mainly ability and numbers (stats) ttake a smaller role in my choices.

Thanks for the stats follow-up, Beans. I was looking at it proudly, as it was very, very close to the list I would have put up before researching through the stats:
1. Brodeur
2. Kiprusoff

4. Lundqvist
5. Giguere
Tough to rank them from the 4 spot down, but there it is. I want to put Fleury up there, but it'll have to wait a year or two.

All the lists seem pretty much the same sans order...
1. Brodeur
2. Luongo
3. Lundqvist
4. Nabokov
5. Turco
It felt wrong to leave Kipper off the list but he's just been sliding to much to ignore. I think it's ridiculous to put Leclaire on this list, he had one above average season that's it. |

1. Luongo- didnt have the best year but i mean come on he got a girl preggers why wouldnt be a little of their game
2. Nabokov- great year last year, i know san jose is a grea team but he played amazzing throughout the season
3. Osgood-i loved how detroit went and got him back. i always loved watchin ozzy play for the wings and he had an amazing season and playoffs leading his team to the cup
4. Broduer- as much as i dont like him and dont like the fact veryone thinnks he's so great considering of how well his Defence plays the trap. but at the same time he's a hell of a good goalie
5. Lundqvist- he may be young but the force is strong with this one henrik is a great netminder and for the few years he's been with new york he has played great
edit: and Marc-Andre Fleury is close bhind henrik
also i dont know how anyone can think price is in thee top 5. HES 20 and has not even proved himself. to be a top 10 goalie anyway hes good but im not sold yet. price makes a small sve and the habs fans go crazy. i mean come on when he makes a backwards glaove save with his eyes closed(not that anyone else has) ill call him the best goalie in the league

#1 - Matin Brodeur!!! will go down in history as the greatest of all time, we should consider ourselves lucky to have watched him play! and he still has it!
#2 - Roberto Luongo - Rarely has an off night, simply stellar
#3 - Henrik Lundqvist - Impressive young goalie to say the least! will be a great one
#4 Mikka Kiprusoff - Had an off year last year, but when he is on there is none better. Last year pissed him off, and he is in the best shape of his career
#5 J.S. Giguere - Incredibly smart, great position, very few weaknesses in this guys game.
Hon. Mention Marty Turco. I would have liked to see an up and comer like mike smith stay around to push Turco to be better, cus we know he can be! Still a great asset to any team. |

1.Luongo-modest and focused(has won many games with no team)
2. Brodeur-The stats say it all
3.LeClaire- Will dominate as the jackets get stronger
4. Nabokov- Gets better every period, consistant
4. Kipper-Was once the best but is limited by Keenan and I do believe Kipper has developed a bit of a bad attitude. Can you blame him with Keenan though?

1. Brodeur - simply the best, cups, vezinas, more hardware then any other active goalie and knocking on some records thought untouchable.
2. Luongo - he got the canucks as far as he could by himself, could carry the right team to a cup
3. Kipper - having trouble now but I think its a coach issue not his ability to play goal
4. Ilya Bryzgalov - this coyote is good, watch him fellas! He is under the radar in Phoenix
5. Toskala - leaf fans rejoice, he is a good one, a lot like Hasek was and look at the hardware he holds. If only the Leafs could ice even an average team, well there's always '67.

Amazingly, Tim Thomas does not appear on anyone's list, even including lists with 5 honourable mentions!
Using some of Beans' criteria, here's where Thomas currently sit in the stats department, and in other ways:
"1) They all win. Period"
Thomas has 29 wins, only 3 back of first place overall.
(And he has only played 46 games)
"2) They all make a ton of saves"
While Thomas sits #10 in number of saves, his saves per game average is the best of the top 10 goalies with number of saves. He averages 30 saves per game.
"3) They all have a great save percentage"
Thomas is #1 in the NHL with a .939 save percentage
"4) They all have the ability to win a game all on their own"
Thomas has definitely won games on his own for the Bruins.
"5) They are all experienced enough ensure some hardship through the season."
No question about Thomas' experience. He's also handled great adversity, in particular, in how he regained the starting spot from Tuuka Rask, who is a pretty good goalie himself.
One category not mentioned is shutouts. Thomas is #2 in the NHL, with 7 shutouts.
Sure, Boston plays a defensive style which helps a goalie's stats, but Tim Thomas surely must be one of the top ten goalies in the NHL. I'm not suggesting he's the number one goalie in the NHL, but I would put him at #4 or #5 on my list, and definitely ahead of some other goalies mentioned. (Giguere and Toskala to name two.) |

| Uh, did you notice that this thread was started back in the summer of '08? Most of the replies were from early '08 and at that point, Thomas was coming off an uninspiring .500 season and had yet to have his "break out" year. |

Things change, players get older, etc.
Thomas might be just outside my top 5 right now . . . hard to put him ahead of Lundqvist, Bryzgalov, Price, Hiller, Miller, Backstrom, Kiprusoff, Ward.
Right now, hands down, Price has been the best goalie this season . . . but until he does this in the playoffs, I couldn't put him top three. I would rank it like this for me right now:
1) Lundqvist
2) Miller
3) Ward
4) Price
5) Luongo
Tough to rank them, though.

The Top 5 defensive teams, going by goals against average, are as follows for this season so far:
1 – Boston – 2.25
2 – Nashville – 2.29
3 – Vancouver – 2.29
4 – Los Angeles – 2.41
5 – NY Rangers – 2.44
Deos this mean these teams have the best goalies this season?
I say yes, BUT only to some degree. Defence support has a lot to say about a good goalie.
Based on above numbers, and factoring in the defence support (or lack of), I think the top 5 goalies this season are:
1 = Price
Montreal is 7th in the league for GA, missing the CORE of their defence for most of the season, and is bottom 10 in goal scoring - Price is the Habs this year, no question
2 = Thomas
First in GA, constantly on highlight reels
3 = Luongo
They're still 2nd for GA in the league, considering their defence was hurting most of the season
4 = Quick (just over Rinne)
Quick as slightly less defensive support than Rinne does
5 =Fleury
He's had practically a new offense emerge this season as his top forwards got injured, and he won several games on his own
