I don't think people realize how rare a 100 points season is.
Between 1996-97 and 2003-04 there were only 8 players to get more than 100 points in a season and it happenen 11 times. That less than 2 guys per season on average.
Last year there were only 2 (Malkin and Ovechkin), the year before there were 7. I would think there will be somewhere in the middle of those two.
Realistically, 1.21 PPG over 82 games will get right at 100. For a player to do it today, they almost have to play every single game and store at least 1 point a game and have 2 points every 2nd game. That's not an easy feat with the lower scoring game today compared to the 80's and early 90's.
Think about 92-93, there were 21 players to get 100 or more points. I would think it will be a long time before we see that again!
My guess is 3. Crosby, Ovechkin are my sure bets. The third guy could be any one of about 15 players. |

No, that is not what I said. If you look back, I clearly say I think there will be 3. Croby and Ovechkin are my bets. The other single player could be ONE of 15. Not all 15.
I would run through Edmonton Naked in a snowstorm if 17 guys got 100 points this year. It's just not an offensive enough league and not nearly the talent pool there was in 92-93 or any other year basically between 1979 and 1995. |

If 1 of 15 guys could be the third player to reach 100pts then I would have to assume that you feel the competition is too close to pick one. Realistically I don't think even close to 17 will do it, but what I'm getting from your post is that 17 people could do it.

Just using your formula of 1.21 PPG = 100pts there were 6 players last year who averaged that (7 if you count Forsberg) and four more who were under 0.05 PPG away from that mark.
Some notables who didn't make the cut are Heatley, Lecavlier, Kovalchuk, Gaborik, and Savard. Let's also not forget about those who have already scored 100pts and are far from their prime...Hossa and Staal
And those who are past their prime but could still have it in them...Naslund, Kariya, and Sakic who did it as recently as 06/07.
If the chips fell into place, players get the right chemistry I don't see any reason why Ovechkin and Crosby should be the only players getting 100pt consideration. |

I totally hear you MSC, but you are missing the injury situation. The math is 1.21 PPG over 82 games. There are many players that are very close, but how many play all 82 games??
Looking at the top 150 scorers from last season, the average games played is a little more than 71. Only 32 of the 150 top scorers played all 82 games. That being said, for a player to get 100 or more points with the average games played, they would have to average 1.40PPG. There was not a player in the league last year that did that.
My point is that not only does a player have to average ATLEAST 1.21 PPG, they have to play almost every game to reach the feat.
It's a lot harder that people think and definately harder today than it was 15+ years ago. |

I think we could see 4 or 5 hit the 100 point mark this year i think Sid, Ovie, Iginla, and Thorton will hit it provided their healthy.
Beans if 17 guys hit the 100 point mark I better see something about a crazy guy running around Edmonton naked in a snow storm..lol. |

I would guess 2 to 7 players might get 100pts. Crosby, Ovechkin and Malkin have the skills. Lecavalier, Thornton and Heatley are real close to 100pts, so that might happen. Iginla is capable of it but I'm not sure with Keenan as a coach. Spezza, Zetterberg and Stastny can do it in my opinion if they play all 82 games, but that will never happen. Kovalchuk has the skills but he`s kinda alone in Atlanta. And we never know what Hossa will do...
Tavares can get like 200 pts this year....junior. |

I completely get the injury thing. You can almost predict which players will get bit by the injury bug each year, for some it's like clock work. But I'm also an optimist, what if the stars aligned just right and the players who could do it, did it.
But, just a week into the season and we have Zetterburg missing time already (as per usual) so I guess I'm chasing a fool's gold. |

I think a slew of about 5 forwards could reach 100 points this season. The scoring is up and a big reason for that is the new rule that a powerplay gets the ensuing faceoff in the zone of the team who committed the infraction. Powerplay scoring could go up by 20% because of this rule. In the short season already, many goals have already been scored because of it.
As for names, you have to think guys like Crosby, Ovechkin and Malkin are as close as you can get to a sure thing. I can see Thornton reaching it as well, and there are a couple other forwards capable of doing so but injuries prevent them. Such guys like Spezza, Alfredsson and Zetterberg should be noted here.
There are darkhorses as well. Marc Savard has the talent to do so, but arguably he does not have the talent around him just yet in beantown to put up 100 points. Guys like Staal, Hossa, Lecavalier have done it before but it remains to be seen if it will happen again. |

| Marc Savard played as center for Kovalchuk and Hossa, and didnt get 100 pts. He did get 97 points....but a center cant hope for better wingers. |

I say 5 do it this year, my bets being Ovechkin, Crosby, Malkin, Thornton, Heatley. Maybe even 6 or 7, if one of these guys has a killer year - Iginla, Lecavalier, St.Louis, Kovalchuk, Savard, Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Spezza, Alfredsson.
Like Beans said though, it's all about playing time and injuries, so a few of these players are bound to have stuff happe that limits their point production. But let's say these guys all get 100 points . . . that's 14 right there, plus another 3 guys coming out with a huge breakthough healthy season - say, Stastny, Gaborik and Ribeiro.
Think of it - Bean running naked through an Edmonton snowstorm!
