How long will it take for Brian Burke to pull the trigger on a move?
And what do you see him doing?

I'm thinking nothing will change until after the new year, as the Leaf's are actually playing decent hockey as of late. I watched them against Philly last night, my first full helping of the Leaf's this season, and I was pleasantly surprised at how good they looked. They are obviously missing a couple of pieces to push them into the next echelon, but overall, they played a very decent game, from goaltending forward. Their team defensive game looked nice and organized, with their PK looking really good.
I think it's a nice surprise for Burke to find himself walking into a team that appears to be improving nicely from what expectations were at the beginning of the season.
Hopefully, he'll find some useful toughness to bring to the team, a physical role player with some skill, to help look after the Grabovskis and Moores, Mayers and Hollweg don't bring that dimension past a certain point.
Maybe Blake can start to play up to his contract and take care of some the offensive load, but if not, Burke will hopefully try and augment some of the scoring by making a deal for an offensive threat.
They look a lot better than the naysayers probably want to admit, and I'm not sure how much of Burke's "genius", is needed, other than to motivate what is already there.

I agree, he will wait before making too many moves. I think what's going to happen is that the team will have a more consistent work ethic, because Burke is known to be very strict on players. If the scorers don't score, they will be moved to the bottom 6, and if they don't cut it there, then they are usually not playing. Players tend to play better out of fear I think, but at least we will see the true potential of the players at hand. Then he might trade the guys that just don't want to be there. I dont know if any changes will impact the Leafs overall result this year, they may make the playoffs, but I don't know if he can build a contender in 1 year. Rome wasn't built in 1 day and neither will the leafs.

Thank you, Thank you very much(to quote the King),

Nothing quite like taking the time to answer a forum with that sort of reply...kind of makes the whole thing redundant and hypocritical for you doesn't it?

Apparently you don't care, but do care enough to take the time to reply, with a reply that stated your lack of interest, thereby, implying you DO have an interest to make sure we understand your lack of interest. How quaint....and as a guest account no less....quaint and frivolous....you must be proud..

If I've confused you......again Thank you, Thank you very much.

i agree elvis.

I think he will waite a while and see what the team brings. The boys will need to step it up to stay in the line up.

However, I could see him making a move to pick up a heavy weight. That is the one thing the club need and Burke seems to like size on his teams. This could happen sooner than later.

GO LEAFS GO!!!!!!!

With the kind of offense the Leafs have, wouldn't it be better to aim for a couple of top draft picks 2-3years to build up a big team like Ottawa did in the 90s, or Pittsburgh, Washington and Chicago did lately??? It's a good start if Toronto could win the John Tavares lottery...

As I see it, Burke will remain fairly inactive until the trade deadline. If a deal comes along he won't turn it down, but I think he needs some time to understand the currect shape of the team and the current direction. At the trade deadline, it will depend on the standings. If they are close to or out of the playoff race, Burke will attempt a fire sale. Looking specifically at Kaberle, he will try to move him, maybe Antropov and Blake as well. If he can unload those three players, he will be in prime position for this seasons free agent crop. Thinking of that, here are a few FA that are or could be on the market come July:

Centre - Couple of his old Anaheim role players in Rob Niedermayer and Sam Pahlsson, Mike Cammalleri, Johan Franzen, Saku Koivu, Robert Lang, Henrik Sedin, and Andy MacDonald(his castaway)

Wings - Travis Moen, Alex Tanguay, Henrik Zetterberg, Martin Havlat, Ruslan Fedotenko, Daniel Sedin, Ales Kotalik, Marian Hossa, Maxim Afinogenov, Alexei Kovalev, Mike Knuble, and Petr Sykora.

Defensemen - Beauchemin, Spacek, Leopold, Bouwmeester, Skrastins, Oduya, Mara, Kuba, Malik, and Ohlund.

There are more out there, but I tried to pick apart the decent names. As you can see, there are quite a few big names on the market this season, and many of them (14 in total) are currently with Anaheim.

I say Burke will stay the coarse for the most part, dump at the trade deadline if possible, and look for 4-5 key free agents to build a core at defense and forward. I doubt he will do anything in goal unless he actually has that big of a had on for European players.

That's my take.

Yes, he has made it clear he wants 6 distinctively skilled forwards and 6 forwards to fill the energy and hard nosed type of player. He has also said he wants to go either to the top, or to the bottom and does not believe in being an O.K. team each year because you can't do anything with that. He has stated he wants to boost the testosterone on this team, so look for him to start filling the 3rd and 4th lines this year, while gaining some picks and shipping out the last bit of overrated dead weight on the team. Expect a big signing in the offseason, maybe 2-3.

I see him waiting until the new year, unless somone comes to him with a great offer, which isn't likely at a time with everyone still in the hunt.

He has continually expressed his desire to get guys to fill roles, so to predict what he will be looking for is easy, just by looking at the team.
Needs:
1. 4 skilled forwards for the 1st and 2nd lines. 1 one of them should be a potential franchise player, preferrably Canadian.
2. At least one solid "defensive" defenceman.

Past that, it's speculation, but I think he'll stick with Toskala for the time being, and maybe look for a decent enforcer type player who can put in the odd goal.

Now, who would give us a good return (to get some of those top forwards) that we want to get rid of? Names that come to mind are Kaberle, Antropov, Steen, and of course Blake if anyone wants him (not likely though).

I say at least one blockbuster deal is coming, but we'll have to wait until other teams are getting more desperate for help, so at least one more month at least I think.

Are you kidding??? Seriously, Luongo is in Vancouver until HE chooses to leave. I don't think there is a package or player in the league that the Canucks would take for Luongo. Perhaps a top 3 player in the league, but definately nothing that Toronto has. I can't think of any package that TO could put together that would improve Vancouver to the point of them getting rid of Luongo.

Give your head a shake.

bahahahaha!

Oh I am giving my head a shake... at you for not seeing I was clearly kidding. That was more of a shot at the Panthers for letting him go. Didn't think anyone would take that seriously.

The Leafs should not even think of acquiring anyone of star quality in their prime; their career would go to waste, as well as some quality rebuilding time. The Leafs' ship needs to sink to the bottom, trading for someone to bail them out would be counterproductive
