Poll Question:
I thought for a change it would be different to debate some other players rather than the Gretzky/Lemieux/Orr and Crosby/Malkin/Ovechkin discussions.

You are drafting for your team and for arguments sake, the following players are available and the same age.

Who do you draft? Why?

Choices:

Steve Yzerman
Joe Sakic

i would rather have second pick in that draft so i didnt have to be the one to decide between the two, either player would be a great edition to my team

Well put. Haha

I agree, these players are 2 amazing Canadian players who have the whole package. They are neck and neck in every category, althought I would give the skill factor to Sakic by a slim margin ( The wrister is just too pure) and the heart factor to Yzerman, also by a slim margin (This guy is full of fire and passion to win).

When you say, "the same age" how old are we talkin here? If it is 35 year old Yzerman vs 35 year old Sakic, I'll take Joe. If it is 25 year old Yzerman vs 25 year old Sakic, i'd take Stevie Y.

There is no "I" in team, but there is an "M" and an "E".

I was thinking that both are draftable in the same year as 18 year olds and you are drafting to build your team around.

My choice, as hard as it is, with the luxury of hindsight, would be Yzerman. In my humble opinion, he did as much or more than Sakic, with less support over his career. He had some good teams to captain for sure, but he also made do with a lot less taleneted teams during his tenure. Gerard Gallant?? John Ogrodnick?? He made these guys stars somewhat....that's talent.

Tough call, but Sakic's always been my favorite player so I'd have to go with him. He is more skilled than Yzerman and I would argue that he has every bit the fire that Stevie's got in his belly. So many times when the game was on the line Sakic has come through for his team. I think his goals in the 2002 olympics are forever etched into the minds of all Canadians.

Oh definitely one of the most clutch guys to ever play the game. When it's late in the game, and she's all tied up if I was on the ice he would definitely be the guy I would be looking for. So much composer in these situations, it was/is amazing to watch.

Nice change of pace indeed, and thanks for someone asking at what age we are talking about here, as it certainly would make a difference.

At the tender age of 18, all things being equal, I'd take Yzerman. Sakic, it can be argued, has a bit more skill, but it's not a whole lot there between them. However, when speaking about defensive abilities and leadership starting from a young age, it's Yzerman hands down. He was always the classy leader, just one of those guys born to it. Not saying Sakic didn't grow into a complete player and become a leader; but it took a while longer for him, and I think most would agree very few forwards can compete with Yzerman's defensive capabilities.

Detroit was darn lucky when they got him, that's for sure.
