Poll Question:
I don' t even bother to tune in to it. Its a joke. The NHL should get on board and make the all star game worth something like the MLB where the winning league earns home field advantage in the world series. I've watched all star games in baseball and their great to watch!
If we changed it to that the winning conference could get home ice advantage in the Stanley Cup finals and maybe this game could have some meaning.
So what should the NHL do?

Choices:

Keep it the way it is
Change it to a MLB format

I have been thinking about this a lot lately. I really enjoy watching the way the MLB does it. And how it means something.

Crosby is not the Jesus Lord & Savior of the NHL, get over yourself McGuire.

Gretzky has never once high-sticked a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Ya, we would definitely see more of an effort put forth from the TEAMS if it were MLB format. Right now I find that the All-Star game is not living up to the amount of entertainment it could be.

Well, think harder everyone - you're all wrong!

Seriously, I can't believe so many want to change it to a game that might take away the hard fought regular season accomplishments of a Stanley Cup finalist . . . because that is what you would be doing.

That means that last year, Detroit being the superior team and having home ice advantage would have been for nothing, instead, Pittsburgh would have been at home first. Does anyone really think that would have been fair?!? I don't, so maybe some more people should think about that.

IT'S ONE GAME. An All-Star game, to showcase superstars. If you don't like it, get over it. But please, don't screw some team over just because you want to have an extra game of hard-hitting, bone-crunching hockey!

And btw, baseball's all-star game is the biggest snoozefest ever, because baseball in general is too boring and drawn out anyways! Football's all-star game sucks, and basketball is the same as hockey when it comes to the same event, really. An all-star game is what it is, let's just learn to accept that.

Slozo is completely right. One of the complaints I often hear is that the regular season is meaningless. By taking away home ice, by means of the ASG, that would render the regular season even more so.

I would like to see it go back to the old format of the Stanley Cup champs vs an allstar team. Make it a real game instead of just a game of shinny. I know, people will worry about injuries, but you could hold it earlier in the season to help allay that concern (more time to recover).

Just off the wall, maybe to make the game more enticing, if the champs win, they get an extra draft pick, or if the allstars win, the MVP of the allstar team, whichever their regular club is gets the extra pick.

I do not agree. The hockey all-star game is the biggest snoozefest because hockey without defence is very boring. The forwards make that 5th and final pass right in front of the net and WOW what a surprise he scored his 5 on the night and we are only in the 2nd period. Give me a break. I will not be watching.

I do agree with Slozo it should not be like MLB. Play the mean nothing game and lets get back to the regular season.

I completely disagree with you Slozo. Detroit definately would not have had the same challenges in the regularly pathetic Central Division that Pittsburgh did in the Atlantic. Giving Detroit home ice advantage because they were able to pile on the wins against teams like Columbus and St Louis, is not right either. Chicago has only recently started to become a contender, hence Detroit's many President's Cup trophies in the past few years. (4 pres trophies, 1 tied for most pts but Buf had more wins, in the last 6 seasons - 3 pres trophies in the last 4 seasons when Detroit had 8 games against divisional opponents)

4 Teams in the Atlantic division made it into the playoffs, only 2 from the Central did.

You're just trading one flawed idea for another in terms of home-ice advantage during the Stanley cup finals.

Making the east's best vs west's best in a meaningful game to determine a stanley cup advantage in home games doesn't seem that illogical.

To clarify the president's trophies numbers in case i didn't get that out right:

Detroit had 4 President's trophies in 6 seasons
plus 1 year where they tied Buf for most pts, but lost the trophy on wins. So that's 5 out of the past 6 seasons they had the most points in the NHL.

Detroit had 3 Presidents trophies in the past 4 seasons
plus 1 year where they tied Buf for most pts. That's 4 seasons in a row of having the most pts in the NHL.

Seriously guys, this event is for kids. The Kids absolutley love it, and it is not meant for the 'hardcore' fans at all. If you don't like it don't watch. It's as simple as that. Teams don't want their players getting hurt in an exhibition game and players just want to enjoy the weekend there with their families.

I see the all star game for what it is, a sexy fashion show for the NHL, that has little substance. The players might as well be coming out on a runway, do a little twirl, then go back to the dressing rooms.

There is no "I" in team, but there is an "M" and an "E".

Well it's definately worth something now (in a round-about way). Lidstrom and Datsyuk are not eligible to play their first game back after the all star break. The rule is that if they played in the last game before the all-star break and they miss the all-star game due to "injury", then the player must miss the next game after the break.

What do you guys think about that.

HA! I'm a true hockey fan! I love the game and I follow and watch it all the time. HOWEVER, I hate the allstar game. It is the most boring game of the year and it's even worse considering the starting lineups! 4 Habs! 3 Blackhawks! 3 Ducks! No Thornton, Ovechkin, Iginla! Crosby SHATTERS Jagr's record for most votes! Can anyone say popularity contest? The allstar game is a joke and I love how Lidstrom and Datsyk have realized this.

But I guess I'm not a true hockey fan.

Not true at all your still a fan. Just because you dont like seeing people who score the majority of the NHL goals sit at the opposing teams blue line and wait for the breakaway pass means nothing. But i don't think it should mean anything, its just for the best in the league to have fun. Yes, the starting lineup is a popularity contest, but other than when Rory Fitzpatrick was being voted for, they deserve to be there. Thats why the rest of the teams are picked by the NHL. Yes the allstar game is really boring, but again so is every all star game in every sport.

The all-star game IS A JOKE. For anyone on here over the age of 30 you will remember when the allstar game was really interesting to watch. It was the best forwards, best defencemen, and best goalies in the game showcasing their deserved appointment to the game. The allstar game has long been of little substanance but at least it was more then a circus on ice. The players wanted to play in it and wanted to thank their fans with an extraodinary show of skill. Todays allstar game is what I call "americanized" and does little to please regular or hardcore fan of the game. It truly looks like its run like a circus. It does no justice to the game. What needs to change is the whole selection format, the basic skills need to showcased again, and the players need to feel like it truly is a honour and actually play. The players don't want to play because they too think it is a joke. Have the stanley cup final coaches from the previous season coach the teams. The players are selected by the coaches or the players themselves. Get rid of the circus events around the skills competition and go back to showcasing the basic skills of the game with no "freestyle" shootout crap- just a plain old breakaway competition that stays within the rules. Give the players automatic bonous if selected to the allstar game and they play in it. Some people will recognize those as the way it used to be when everyone watched the all-star game the same as they would watch Hockey Night in Canada.
