Not sure if anyone picked up on this, but despite having as many points as Carolina (who clinched a playoff berth) in one less game, NHL.com doesn't have Philly recorded as clinching a playoff spot. Why?

The theory I came up with is that Carolina is playing teams that aren't able to overtake them, so no matter what they make it in, while Philadelphia can lose to a team that would end up beating them on the record between them, despite having the same amount of points. Make sense?

Or did the NHL just make a mistake on its website?

Its because of the head-to-head record between Philly and Florida. If florida wins their last three games and Philly loses there remaining games the teams would be tied in points and wins. So the tied breaker is head-to-head record where Florida is 2-0-1.

Carolina has clinched because even if they tie Florida on points, Carolina has more wins.

Tie-Breaking procedure

Division leaders are seeded 1, 2, and 3 in Conference standings. If two or more clubs are tied in points during the regular season, the standing of the clubs is determined in the following order:

1. The fewer number of games played (i.e., superior points percentage).

2. The greater number of games won.

3. The greater number of points earned in games between the tied clubs. If two clubs are tied, and have not played an equal number of home games against each other, points earned in the first game played in the city that had the extra game shall not be included. If more than two clubs are tied, the higher percentage of available points earned in games among those clubs, and not including any "odd" games, shall be used to determine the standing.

4. The greater differential between goals for and against for the entire regular season.

Well the Flyers did get shafted Thursday night as the Rangers were credited with a goal by simply sliding Marty Biron across the goal line while he was perched on the puck. The play certainly should have been whistled dead.

Did you hear about the retired proctologist? He spent 40 years saying "what's a place like this doing in a girl like you?"
