Granted this is off the topic of hockey but a matter of concern to me and I have decided to pose the question here since the majority of our members are Canadian. Here in America a national health care plan is a topic of hot debate. As Canada has had national heath care for a number of years now I would like to hear of our members experiences with health care in Canada. Of course I am interested in comments from those who have needed health care not those who have not been ill. Has medical care from primary doctors been a problem? In the cases requiring hospitalization and/or surgery has treatment been prompt and effective, or are the scare stories of 6 month waits and denied treatment we have been given by our right wing party true? tell me the experiences of you or your family members.
Did you hear about the retired proctologist? He spent 40 years saying "what's a place like this doing in a girl like you?"

Hi Umteman, Here is an interesting debate on Canadian vs. American (and French) healthcare systems. It is between two famous popular culture writers who wrote for the New Yorker; Malcolm Gladwell and . Adam Gopnik. I found it to be a very interesting read and thought you might appreciate it. Note that it is a little old, but the issues remain the same.

There is long waits for health care here. I regularily watch American news and the republicans are right about this. The mainstream media is in love with Obama (specifically NY Times) and are not reporting what they should. The public is starting to realize this as shown in the ratings.
Obama is following the path of California and as of last week California is bankrupt. Obama has already imposed the largest tax increase in the history of the WORLD, this didn't even make headlines. Obama said there will not be a tax increase to provide this health care, so where is the money going to come from. IF this health care plan goes through your country WILL go bankrupt, possibly as early as the end of this year. I would trade your current health care for ours any time you want. Until the media starts reporting I really hope this doesn't get passed, every day it is less likely to. Your economy has a big influence on ours.
I wish you all the best. When the love affair with Obama is over your country will beging to rebound. |

All due respect LarryDavid, could not have been more incorrect.
The Universal Health care system in Canada does require you to wait. However, nothing compares to you have to leave and go hospital to hospital to find one that has a contract with your respective Health Insurance provider in the States. Also, in Canada, you wait based on urgency. For example, when I cut my foot open wake boarding in Picton, I waited maybe 5 minutes at the hospital, if that. Simply because I needed 17 stiches. Now at the same time, there was a gentlemen there who said he had been waiting for 1/2 hour if memory serves me right. Why the wait? Because he had a sore back. Also, any patient that comes in suspecting of heart and/or chest problems, they go in immediately. Of course, people that arrive in Emergency via Ambulance don't wait either. The best part is, after they stitched me up, i left, no payments to be made or cars to be handed over lol
LarryDavid, for facts on the Health care Systems of the world, and to see why Canadian's, British and the French are blessed with ours, watch the documentary "Sicko" by Michael Moore.
Also, LarryDavid, if you would like to go to an American hospital, and pays 10's of thousands of dollars for a broken finger. Be our guests and trade systems with "umteman".
As for your points on President Obama. For the Health care in the States to mimic ours in Canada, he would implement more "Health care taxes", while reducing other taxes. Therefore balancing them out, so in fact, he didn't raise taxes. Also, by Obama pulling out of the war, he saves BILLIONS a day therefore, allowing him to pay for his nations health (currently, the war racks up a bill of $1.2 Billion per day). As for your points on California. The system there was approved by the previous administration, voted on by the people, correction, the CEO's and executive's of the Health Companies looking to pocket as much $$ as possible. So to compare Obama's plan, to the state of California's, is plain stupid.
Umteman, the Universal Health care system would be best for your country. No more paying and arm and a leg to fix your arm and leg. No more unnecessary spending used to line the pockets of executives from Humana, Kaiser, Pfizer etc. Most of all, no delays in the hospital. If you go for something serious, maybe 10-15 minutes, for something minor, maybe an hour.
Also, back to Obama, with his first budget, he's managed to cut over a Trillion dollars in spending. The USA is already beyond bankrupt, also, a country can't go bankrupt, they just go deeper into debt. Under Obama, for the first time in decades, the USA won't be at a loss come midnight on December 31st.

Guest 8421 This will be my last post since this is a hockey site, I was only trying to help out a fellow reader.
I am not sure where you are getting your information, I assume CNN or MSNBC. Obamas spending is out of control, nothing compares to what he is currently doing. His budget has 34% more spending than any president in the history of the US and that includes all the money saved from leaving Iraq. Regardless of who put the system in place in California Obama is following it. And yes they are bankrupt, ask someone from California if they have recieved their income tax refund or the government workers about the days they are working and not being paid.2 days every month they work that they are not paid for.
Obama's total spending after his first 50 days in office- $2,290,000,000,000 ($2.29 trillion)
That equals out to be:
$45,800,000,000($45.8 billion a day) for every single day Obama has been in office
$1,908,333,333 ($1.908 billion an hour) for every single hour Obama has been in office
$3,180,555 ($3.18 million per minute) for every single minute Obama has been in office
$530,092 for every single second Obama has been in office.
That is right. Obama has spent $530,092 for every second he has been in office
Concerning health care here in Canada Yes it is nice to go the emergency room and not have to wait or pay on the spot. If you want a Cat scan, MRI, surgery, or to see a specialist you are looking at a 12-24 month wait. And yes it is true
I realize it doesn't make sense to discuss this topic on this site and I won't be commenting on this anymore.
I will check this post in one year time and see how things are going.
I really don't think this health care will get passed. For all the American people let's hope not.
