Apparently the NHL and NBA might go the way of soccer leagues in Europe and allow sponsorship on jerseys. Interesting...

Thoughts? Frankly I don't think I care one way or another. I mean when I buy a jersey I'm not thrilled with the prospect of becoming a walking billboard. But as long as the advertisement is on a shoulder patch or something it's not such a big issue. Kind of interesting actually to see what corporations will try to get their foot in the door with which teams.

I'll bet you RIM will try to advertise on a certain Pacific team's jersey.

I think that North America as a whole is way behind the sponsorship thing. I mean, it's gravy cash. Consider that AIG, the lead sponsor for Manchester United ponies up $14 million pounds a year(That $25 million Canadian or $23.7 million US) it a huge opporunity. Sure, not all the teams could get that kind of cash, but the big dogs (TO, Montreal, NY, Detroit) could pull in potentially $15-$20 million for a lead sponser, that's huge.

Tell me an owner that wouldn't take 40% of their total cap hit to have the name of a company on the jersey.

As an owner, I wouldn't even think about this. It's a no brainer. Some fans might have a bee in their bonnet for a while, but it wouldn't take long. Consider that it wasn't long ago that the home team wore white jerseys and most people forget about that.

It's a non issue and a huge cash cow for the teams and the league overall. Geez, one decent sponsor and 12,000 fans a game and Phoenix breaks even!
