How long will Vesa hold onto the #1 spot for the buds?

I really cant answer this question. I know vesa has the ability to be a solid #1 goalie because of his days in san jose, but i just havent seen it yet in toronto. I like vesa, but his leash is getting shorter and shorter and if he doesnt start playing like we all no he has the ability to play, he will be sitting on the bench watching gustavsson start games before he knows it. I really hope vesa can find his groove because i know he is a good goalie, but he's gotta get going and get going quickly.

if we look at toskala's past in SJ - he was doing well when "sharing" the #1 spot.
therefore, the best scenario for Leafs is if toskala shares #1 with the monster - this way he plays better with less pressure and the monster is slowly integrated to the team and the nhl

Playing well as a goalie, even at this elite level, has so much to do with confidence - and I do feel that Toskala has lost a lot of that.

If he can string together some early victories, especially a shootout win or two, the ball will get rolling and he will get better. But if there are some tough losses, the confidence will continue to go southward, and I think Gustavsson better be there to pick up the slack! The monster has looked good in the periods he's played, but we really will have to wait and see a dozen games or so first at the very least.

Looking ahead to the Leafs' first 7 games, they have 5 at home, 2 away. Besides one game against Pittsburgh and Washington, they have a gimme against Colorado, and 4 against teams they will be battling a playoff spot for - the Rangers twice, Montreal, and Ottawa. If the Leafs really are playoff contenders like I think they are, 4 wins out of 7 shouldn't be out of the question.

Hmm. I say, Toskala is the solid starter until Christmas at least, with almost no opinion on how good the Monster is, so I couldn't really guess if he will play off his head and start stealing starts away from Toskala. I still say Toskala is the starter for the whole season, but Gustavsson gets maybe 20 starts.

I say Toskala stubbles out of the gate and Gusta gets an opportunity early. Then when Burke realizes he has no legitimate #1 he signs a Gerber/Cujo type player to play the majority of the games while grooming Gusta throughout the season and trading away the waste of talent that was Toskala.

Toskala is the starter as long as the TO defense doesn't hang him out to dry. If the TO defense plays anything like they did last year, Toskala makes it a month. Then Gusovsson will come in for a few games and do really well, then he will take too.

Much like Slozo said, I agree that Toskala had his confidence shaken last season and it does not appear he has regained it yet. However, it will come back quickly. It doesn't require wins, but he needs to be able to play know that his defense will bail him out from time to time rather than hang him out to dry.

If Toskala finds his game early in the year, he's good for 30ish wins, a better than .900 save percentage and will play around 60 games. Gustovsson will get at least 20 games because Burke needs to know who he is going to sign next year. If Gustovsson plays well early, Toskala might even get traded by the deadline. I would think if Varlamov doesn't do it for Washington, that team would be a good candidate.

Regardless, it's Toskala's job to lose and his defense can lose it for him.

Looks like the "monster" is probably best for #1 spot.
Look at the early numbers - he's right up there and even better than the NHL elite goalies:

Brodeur - 0 wins / 2 losses / 0.849%
Luongo - 0 wins / 3 losses / 0.820%
Monster - 0 wins / 2 losses / 0.894%

GO (where) LEAFS !!!

Well Toskala is off to his notoriously slow start again. I think he still has get his confidence back. He has let in a couple of soft goals in his first two starts (yes they were soft goals Beans!). I am not ready to give the #1 job to Gustavsson yet but I like his play in the net so far. He was not really tested in the Ottawa game but looked solid and well positioned.
Toskala is a capable #1 goalie in the NHL and he has proven that in the past. I think he will regain his form. He has to because I think "the Monster" is ready to take the spot from him.

I can almost guarantee that Toskala will start on Sat against Pittsburgh . . . what I absolutely cannot guarantee, is a win.

But I just have a feeling that the Leafs will get a win, maybe an o/t or shootout victory - just what the doctor ordered? Or is it too much to hope for that the Pens will play as badly against the Leafs as they did against the Coyotes?

Slozo, i wish your Leafs all the best against the Pens. My thinking is, the Pens come out flying and make up for a horrible showing last night versus the Yotes! Then again, maybe it's me being bitter as i threw $200 on them to win at -1.5 (online with a payout that would have been $470). Figured it was a gimme, i was oh so wrong!

Pittsburgh / TO games are usually a fun one to watch, especially in primetime on a Saturday night!

I didn't bet on Crosby...i bet on the Pens, and would have still bet on them at home vs the Coyotes even if your little pal Sid was out of the lineup. Guess the $500 i won on my Stanley Cup bet last year was undeserving? Oh well, i'll take it....

TBar....The site i'm currently using is sportsinteraction.com

I've used a few different ones and this one isn't particularly my favorite but i've got a approx $1700 sitting in my account (started with $500) and i don't usually cash out till i get up to $3000+ as it's a bit of a hassle cashing out. Well, it's actually not difficult really, but it takes a bit of time to get your cheque and i prefer to have some money in there to gamble at this time of year as hockey and NFL are my favorites to wager on! I used to use Bowmans which is now part of Bet365 and i've also used one other which i don't believe is around any more??? I went to these two because they offer online poker as well which i play from time to time......
Each site has their +'s and -'s, it's just a matter of watching the odds and making sure they're the same, or at least close to, those that Vegas puts out?

I think Toronto is a team with no #1 goalie at this point in time. My take is that Wilson and BUrke still consider Toskala as the #1. That being said I think that Toskala has a lot to prove still for him to be the true #1. The Monster may end up bumping Toskala from the starting position, however it is far too early to determine that.

Toskala is #1 until Gustav becomes healthy again, after that he steals the spot

Toskala is a #1 goalie and the Leafs have no other option. The problem in this equation is that the Leafs team in front of him is a joke. Toskala looked pretty decent when he was with San Jose.

There isn't a goalie in the league that you could throw behind that sad sack leafs team and have him excel.

one start in which he lost. and one game that he came in for toskala and allowed just as many goals. and u think this earns him the #1 spot.. you are pretty delusional there. the monster will not fare any better then vesa for the simple reason that the leafs defense is awful. when the monster has a few bad games are you going to start calling for joey mcdonald as #1?

Hey, whats your problem with Joey Mcdonald? Im not promoting him to starter, but he came in for NYI last year and impressed me. His GAA are not so great, but his save % was not so bad for a horrible, horrible team. He might have actually been Burkes best pick up. And this is from a Leafs hater.

I disagree, Toskala is nothing more than a decent backup, he doesn't have the confidence and lacks skill to be a day in day out number 1 goalie for any team... The only reason why Toskala looked so good with San Jose is because simply San Jose can make any goalie look good. The Leafs are a far better team this year than they were last year, they just haven't jelled yet, they need to get used to each other and when they do they'll be a tough team to beat... last year toskala was pathetic, after he was done at the trade deadline they picked up Gerber and between Gerber and Cujo they excelled, they were amazing...

ok.. Sure Gustavsson lost his only start, but really the only two goals he allowed against ottawa 1) Donavons high Stick and 2) the penalty shot, which the high stick shouldn't of counted and there shouldn't have been a penalty shot... That was it, either than that he shut Ottawa out despite the poor play from his teammates... and the game he came in for Toskala against Washington ok sure he allowed just as many goals but Gustavsson played 2 periods, Toskala played 1. Toskala couldn't stop the puck to save his own life. Toskala played 28, he only had 8 shots on him and he allowed 3 very soft goals with a 9.00 goals against average and .625 save % for the game, he was weak... Gustavsson on the other hand could stop the puck and played a much better game. playing 38 minutes stopping 16 out of 19 shots I'd Gustavsson has looked much better than Toskala... So yeah I feel Gustavsson deserves to be the number 1 goalie for Toronto Toskala doesn't cut it... Gustavsson hasn't had a bad game yet Toskala had 3 horrible games... And I personally don't have a problem with Joey MacDonald I actually think he's an awesome goalie.. I'd start MacDonald over Toskala any given day... I feel both Gustavsson and MacDonald are much better goaltenders than Toskala could ever dream of being.. I think when Gustavsson gets back from his injury they should buy off Toskala's contract and let him sign with someone else and let Gustavsson and MacDonald fight for number 1 duties... I feel without Toskala the Toronto would be a much better team.. It would be for the best for the Leafs if they want to win more

i am not saying by any means that mcdonald is a terrible goalie. All i am saying is that he would not be a saviour to the goaltending problems in toronto. Hanley yess we both know toskala let in 3 goals against washington over one period and the monster let in 3 over 2. Oh wait he let in all 3 in the second period. the leafs actually came out n played decent hockey in the 3rd hence why the goaltending was better in the 3rd.. a period toskala did not have a chance to play in.
and weather or not you think it should have been a penelty shot with ottawa, which clearly it was. maybe you should read up on the penelty shot rule. the monster didnt have a chance on alfreddsons move he was out to lunch. didnt exactly look like a goalie i would want in the shootout.

any way you look at it. toronto will continue to have goaltending problems until they improve there team defence and stop giving up good scoring opportunities. last night vs pittsburgh the did not get in shooting lanes and were not picking up players around the net and until they start doing that there goalies will be hung out to dry

yea, toskala was never the #1 guy in san jose, he stepped in when Nabokov (a much better goaltender) was hurt and the rewarded him with his play by letting him split the duties while trying to ease Nabokov into more minutes again. Even with the Leafs, it's easy to see that while he's a decent goalie, he's never going to be a star in this league, and there is a reason the Leafs brought Gustaffson over from Europe. I think Bryan Burke already has it in his mind that Gusta is his started... he's only got a one year deal, so they're not gonna spend all that money to pick him up and not use him. The only reason Toskala is starting right now is because The Monster is hurt. I say Toskala gets dealt to a team who needs another 1A-1B goalie like Chicago or Detroit to play 35 to 40 games for them. Leafs need a full-fledged guy to carry the team, because the offense and defense aren't going to do it for them.

so if toskala is the reason the leafs are so bad.. why is it that that the leafs are 0-6-1 and toskala is 0-2-1. the leafs are still losing despite him being out. and the one point they actually have on the season. he was the goaltender for that game
