They have all fallen from favour among their fans or coaches in recent times. However, these four players have started strong in 2009-10 and are making strong cases for redemption.

RAY EMERY, G, Philadelphia
The combative goalie fought with opponents and teammates alike while with Ottawa. The Senators also grew tired of his off-ice antics which included being late for practice on a few occasions. Ottawa waived Emery in June 2008. There was apparently little interest among NHL clubs and he signed with Atlant Moskow Oblast of the recently formed Kontinental League. After a very good season in Russia, Emery signed with Philadelphia Flyers in June of 2009. He started the 2009-10 NHL season with a shutout and stopped 24 of 26 shots in his second game- also a win. As of this writing Emery is 3-2-1 with one shutout, a 2.79 goals-against-average and a .900 save percentage.

PATRICK KANE, RW, Chicago
Kane was arrested and charged (along with his cousin) in his hometown of Buffalo in August, 2009 after allegedly punching a cab driver in a dispute over change for their fare. The poster boy for Hockey USA was ordered to apologize to the 62-year-old cabbie by the courts. It could take a while before Kane is able to shake the "20 cents" monicker he got from a lot of fans. So far this year he has three goals and four assists in eight games.

DANY HEATLEY, LW, San Jose
At the end of the 2008-09 season, Heatley, unhappy with Senators coach Cory Clouston requested to be traded. Heatley was barely into a lucrative multi-year contract and this did little to endear him to Ottawa fans. A deal was in place to send Heatley to Edmonton but Heatley refused to waive his no-trade clause. This further raised the ire of Sens fans. He was eventually traded to San Jose for Milan Mihalek, Jonathan Cheechoo and a 2010 second round draft pick. Heatley is off to a torrid start this season with five goals and five assists in eight games.

PATRICK MARLEAU, C, San Jose
It's pretty demoralizing to be publicly stripped of your "C". That's what happened to Patrick Marleau in late August when San Jose coach Todd McLellan announced that Marleau was no longer captain of the Sharks. Marleau has rebounded well in 2009-10 and has six goals and one assist in eight games.

Just wait; the season isn't even a month old.

Did you hear about the retired proctologist? He spent 40 years saying "what's a place like this doing in a girl like you?"
