So Naslund and Forsberg coming back to play for Modo is not new, but I did not know that they were each playing on the team for free.

what do you guys think of this? I mean they must absolutely love this team. No min salary in the Swedish Elite league.

Think of it as free training for the olympics those guys just want a chance to defend sweeden's gold medal. Naslund missed out in 06 and 94 so he's looking to get a medal and Forsberg is looking to complete the hat trick as he was there in 94 and 06. From what I have heard Naslund is severely out of shape and is a long shot to make it but Forsberg is looking good.

There's a lot of dirty old occ's around thats the problem

Homework time!!!

Petr Forsberg's father former coach of Modo. Also, Forsberg jr and Sr own a company called Forspro who cofunded the new arena Modo plays in. Both Forsberg and Naslund played for Modo as 17 yr olds and Modo is the team in the hometown they were both born in (10 days apart.)

Naslund has not asprirations of playing for the Swedish team at the Olympics, at least not publicly to this point. Forsberg does, but they are doing this more so because Modo is dead last in the Elitserien.

From what I read, it has little to nothing to do with the Olympics. It has to do with some financial issues as well as a couple of hometown boys doing something good for the community while they still can.

A good synopsis of the article Beans.

I just think it's incredible to see this sort of thing in this day and age. 2 former superstars playing for nothing to help a team out (financially and in the standings). Sure a pessimist can look at this as having some underlying self-serving motivation, but maybe it's doesn't.

It would be like Sakic coming out of retirement to play for Colorado for the league minimum (as close to $0 as possible) to keep them in the playoff picture. I know this is not equivalent but I'm just trying to think of a similar situation over here that would equate...

I've got an example, it would be like David Beckham playing for the Brimdown Rovers FC for nothing to help that team advance in the FA and the town put some $ in it's pockets. It just wouldn't happen.

I don't think very many stars or ex-stars would do this kind of thing.

The town they grew up in has about 35,000 people in it. Modo competes in a league, where to sell out the need 1/7th of the town to come to their games. This season Modo is also getting killed in the league. Since the economic crisis has it, the league has suffered and so has Modo, they could never afford to sign anyone this year, let alone two aging stars. So Naslund and Forsberg offered to play for free to help the club through the rough times. Very Commendable.

Also, as an aside, Naslund is inelligable for the Swedish Olympic team. He was not on the list of elligle the Swedes submitted earlier this year to the IOC, so no matter what happens when he laces up, he can't play for gold. Forsberg could.

To the first comment, Naslund claims to have stayed in shape over the summer. Remember he played his last game in April. He said he would only need a couple weeks of skating to get back in the slow first, and that he would likely be playing in Dec.
