In my opinion only one of these guys will make team Canada which one do you think has the best shot of making it?

Choices:

I am really confused as to how Joe Thornton is even close. Even a guess on this team. No player, since Adam Oates in 92-93 has had as many assists in a single season. He made Cheechoo as 50 goal scorer. He has a legitimate sniper on his wing and Thornton is on pace for another 80+ assists season (and Heatley's on pace for 59 goals).

Let's not forget that he is 6'4" and 235 lbs.

Let's put this into perspective. The vast majority of the players who will play for team Canada this year have not had more POINTS in a season than Thorton has had ASSISTS. The only one's that come to mind are Crosby and Iginla.

He leads the league in assists today and barring injury, will lead the league in assists all year.

Joe Thornton is the best set up man in hockey today. There is no doubt in my mind that he is on Team Canada.

If this poll was made at the beginning of the season with the players listed and it would have been a tougher choice.

But we are a quarter of the way through the season and I say Joe is a shoo-in. Especially if you have him with his Sharks linemates (Marleau and Heatley) on Team Canada. Instant chemistry.

Neither E. Staal nor Vinny are playing up to their potential right now or whatever part of the season before getting hurt.

Just out of curiosity who are your centres if you think Thornton is a bubble player?

Beans, i too couldn't agree more. Funny though, i was listening to a radio show today where the guy they were talking to gave his opinion and while he did have Thornton making it, he didn't have him as a "lock". To me, he's just that, a "LOCK"! No chance he gets passed up and i say he'd still make it even if Vinny had 40 points this season!

Thank you for saying what I have been thinking Beans! Joe Thornton is as big a lock on this team as their is barring injury. For all the reasons you said.

CANUCKS RULE!!!

Jesus, really, this is a serious question?? I agree Thorton is a lock for this team he's second in league scoring and say what you want about his playoff performance he is the number one setup man in the game today.

There's a lot of dirty old occ's around thats the problem

its funny how we all think that thornton is a lock, yet on every sports channel or website like TSN for example, their so called experts don't have thornton on their team. Pierre mcquire on ctvolympics.ca doesnt have him nor does nhl.com who had their guys assemble a team. i just dont understand how he isnt. especially as guest 7099 pointed out, when he could very well be playing with the guys he plays with in the nhl.

The FAN 590 in Toronto reported today that a team canada insider said the San Jose line (Heatley/Thorton/Marleau) is a virtual lock for the team. Which they should be they are all in the top ten in nhl scoring and are all big bodies.

The reason he is not a lock is because he cannot preform under pressure

You miss 100 percent of the shots you don't take Wayne Gretzky

Thing about Thornton is, he gets criticized for his playoff performance simply because he is the best player on the San Jose Sharks (or at least, up there) and therefore expected to lead them to the Cup. He gets criticized for not being tough, for not looking alive, whatever it is... basically, come the playoffs every analyst not named Alex expects him to be something he hasn't been in the regular season, where he had buckets of success.

On team Canada, there's, what, 22 leaders (relative to NHL terms?) Thornton will not be expected to shoulder the load. He will be able to fall under the radar and simply do his thing, and that is the environment in which he excels.

I think if you look at Big Joe's performance in the playoffs, one could argue that watching it, he has been invincibly. However, specifically in his San Jose time, he is still averaging a PPG or very close to it.

San Jose's struggles can not be blamed solely on Thornton. Let's not forget this guy has Medalled 3 out of 5 International Competitions including a 16 points in 9 game performance in the 05 World Championships.

Joe is a lock. Absolutely without question.

Pierre Mcquire has to do stupid things like this so people talk about Pierre Mcquire. He is a tool.
