This is my first year coaching in minor hockey, mainly because I just played my last year of midget earlier this year. Apparently I'm so good already that I'm getting national exposure. No I'm not going into porn...

This Friday night (Dec.8), CBC is joining me, my father and our team's goalie coach who is also 18 at our team's practice to film us for the annual Hockey Day in Canada tradition that is being televised on Jan.13. For those who are unaware of what Hockey Day in Canada (HDIC) involves, here is my description: HDIC is an annual Canadian tradition where the CBC celebrates the game of hockey. This is celebrated coast-to-coast and from the pros all the way down to the grassroots. CBC visits various-sized hockey communities and features stories on how hockey shapes the lives of these communities and the people that live within them. This coverage lasts pretty much the whole Saturday, and all the while they broadcast an NHL triple-header that involves the six Canadian teams playing against each other.

Originally they had planned to join my father and I at our home in Dartmouth, NS tonight (Dec.6) before our game, meet us at the game to get some footage of that and then interview us afterwards. My dad and them decided to come to our practice on Friday instead, seen as it would be too much of a distraction for the kids. Now they will only get some footage of our practice and then do the interviews after.

Why are they getting us on tape? Well as much as I would like to brag about my early coaching prowess, the theme of the feature is actually "Young guys who turned to coaching after midget to stay involved with hockey, and the old guy that's facilitating the transition", which is my wording of course.

Of course I will post reminders about this to make sure you all tune in! I received/chipped in for an authentic, white Patrick Marleau jersey for my birthday earlier this year. I wear this jersey during practices so I can't wait to show it off to the whole country, especially for guys like leigh! Also during the post-practice interview, expect me to also be sporting my beautiful RBK Sharks hat, the same that Joe Thornton wears after their games.

Stay tuned!

Ok so big update:

So we're driving to our practice on Friday, in the middle of a moderate snowstorm, and just as we're approaching the arena, we see a big green explosion. We found out later that that explosion was the breaker for the rink's electricity, meaning only one thing: power outage in the rink. We waited for a bit inside the rink in the dark then finally CBC showed up. Before I go on I have a little relevant side note:

CBC phoned my dad last week and told him that they wanted to do their feature on our goalie coach, the other 18 year old, almost exclusively. They're going to get my dad in there for a bit as the "mentor" but I'm almsot entirely getting shafted. It turns out that they're already doing a father-son feature of a similar genre so it would be too monotonous for them to do another one. I was like SAY WHAT??? So at this time I figure well maybe I'll still be in for a bit, because I'm in the same situation as Jamie (the other coach) and they might just interview him more extensively than me. I told you that to continue my first story...

The whole team is waiting by the entrance of the rink inside and the CBC guys show up and introduce themselves to my dad, who was standing right beside me. They then asked my dad which one was Jamie, so he pointed to him, who was on my other side. So then they shook hands, and then with a cold look of dismissal, the CBC guy turned around and went back to talk to his crew. HELLO BUDDY, YOU MIGHT NOT WANT TO TALK TO ME BUT THANKS FOR THE ACKNOWLEDGMENT!!! I couldn't believe it, didn't even care to introduce himself to me or shake my hand and give me a "So you must be the old guy's son?". At this point I realized how little of a part I've become to this story, wow. Not only do I get the disgraceful shaft, but I can't even flaunt my Sharks jersey. Bunch of wieners CBC are...

So now they're going to come to our home game on Wednesday night and get some game footage there and do the interview(s) there. So even though I'll still be sporting my Sharks hat, I'll be in a shirt/tie + jacket so no Sharks jersey. I wonder if the fact that I'll be doing the pre-game pep talk and being on the bench during the game will convey the fact that indeed I am alive and part of the coaching staff . No expectations though, at least this time I'll be expecting the cold shoulder.

Stay tuned...

Yeah so they were supposed to be at our game last night, as per their request, but they never called my dad back so now who knows what's going on.

Ok, dad just got a call and they're coming to film us at our practice tonight, which means I get to show off my Sharks jersey again! If I'm lucky, maybe even my Sharks hat!

I wish there were jerseys that said "I hate Kiprusoff" cause I would definitely wear that one instead.

I was telling a story. If you don't like it there's no need to whine about me whining.

The filming took place last Friday and all went well. They interviewed pretty much everyone but me (not whining, telling the truth) on how they find Jamie as a coach and what they like about him, etc. I basically had to run the practice (and I did a swell job) because they had either my dad or Jamie aside interviewing them all throughout the practice, leaving me as the only one available the whole time.

Regardless of how much of me will turn out in it, I was proud of our team and can't wait to see it on air!

Plus, I got to sport my jersey and my team got to be on TV so all is good!
