Sorry I didn't use the smiley face. I was speaking as an Oilers fan and a Leafs non-fan. Obviously even your GM wouldn't be stupid enough to trade Pogge after having traded Rask (I hope, for your sake). Part of the joke was that Reijo (Rexi) Ruotsaleinen was a rental player for the Oilers through most of the 80's. He played in Europe through most of each regular season and came to Edmonton for a few playoff runs. Cocky SOB that Glen Sather was/is he would protect Rexi from waivers each year above more valuable players, as a joke; even if he knew the guy wouldn't be around for the post-season. I still hope that JFJ is stupid enough to send Pogge our way, though.

This is dumb. Pogge is a young promising prospect. Why would JFJ trade him, because he is young?? And why would he trade for rights of a players hes never heard of before?? This sounds really dumb.

When life gives you lemons throw them at the Ottawa Senators and their fans and hope it gets them in the eyes ;)

Ottawa will need a new goalie, if they get knocked out of the playoffs in the first round they will let Emery go, that is the Ottawa way, blame the goalie...

There are: People that make things happen, people that watch things happen, and people that wonder what happened, who are you...

I think Raycroft's a good goalie but can definetely improve

Always next year!!

Definitly LA. How can you say any other team? They had to put some Japanese guy in for Christ sakes. They've already moved through 6 goalies this season. LA needs better management too.

LA needs a better goaltender. I really like LA and I think if they could obtain a new goaltender they could become a team like Minnesota.

Agreed. He's a solid goalie, but won't get you to the cup

I never once said Fuhr was a weak goalie, just that is is not a greatest ever. He is a HOF becuase of the Cups he had won with the Oilers, not his play. You could have put Mike Luit, Billy Smith, Ron Hextall, Pelle Lindburg, really most any goalie in the league through the 80's in goal for the Oilers and tehy still win 4 Cups. And you can't say with any confidence that Fuhr was the best of the mid-80's with Roy in the mix. Be realistic.

And Fuhr would have more than likely been a better statistically goalie if his team was more defensive. But it wasn't. That's like saying the Oilers would have won the Cup last year if they scored 4 more goals in the last game, but they didn't. You are stating the obvious, but it's not real.

And where is Salo now?? What does that matter. This talk was about Salo and his time in Edmonton. Whatever, I'm done with this one. I have my thoughts, you have yours.
Guest5029 Posted - 02/18/2007 : 22:05:32
I feel sorry for Grant Fuhr because he doesn't get the respect he deserves because of his numbers. Fuhr was the best goalie in the NHL by a longshot in the Mid-eighties....not even close.

Put it this way, The Oilers were quite a bit looser in there own end in their first 3 cup runs than say Pittsburgh was in their 2. Not to say that the Pens were a defensive juggernault, just that the entire NHL game had started to evolve a little more defensively. Fuhr in his era definitely was definitely better than Barrasso. Gretzky said himself that they wouldn't have been as successful without Fuhr. Let's face facts guys.... Fuhr wasn't exactly in a 'Ken Dryden' kind of situation in his cup runs.
oil guy Posted - 02/17/2007 : 12:58:22
You are right beans, Fuhr had a great offense in front but he also faced
alot of shots that he might not have had to if he had players willing to block them like the later year oilers teams, the last few oil goalies have had so many shots blocked in front of them that they looked better than they are, and every goalie in the NHL has a few highlite reel saves, I am not saying there goalies sucked but they are not the caliber of a Roy, Brodeur, or some of the other real #1 guys, and maybe small market Edmonton could not afford to lure a #1 goalie but could you imagine the oilers with a guy who when MAB blows it or Torres crushes a guy but leaves the puck for the other team or Hemsky deaks out the whole team only to miss the net and have the other team take it the length of the ice, not need to worry about your goalie because he is so solid that it is not a problem.
imo
lyall Posted - 02/17/2007 : 11:54:47
Where is Salo now? I personally don't like the guy and this is his best highlight.

Let's be realistic here for a second. You are right, stats don't win cups. Gretzky, Messier, Anderson, Coffey, and Kuri win Cups. Face it, the Oilers would have won as many Cups with pretty much any goalie in net through the 80's. Fuhr is one of those guys that looked good because of the team in front of him

The team in front of Salo was very weak. He did his job for that team. 2 all stars in four years, 3/4 years in the playoffs with Weight, Guerin, and Smyth as the only players on that team. How does that make him a tool???

Buick92 Posted - 02/17/2007 : 10:12:48
how about Andy Moog I think he was good for them
lyall Posted - 02/17/2007 : 10:00:42
Randford was awsome. Cujo was good. Salo is a tool.

Plus, he played here 6 years. The first year, only 13 games. The last he was traded (obviously). However, in the 4 years he was the starter, he took the very mediocre Oilers to the playoffs 3 times. He was also an all-star twice while he played in Edmonton.

Statistically he was better than any other Oiler goalie in history. And he didn't have a great team in front of him. How quickly we forget.

(I am in no way saying he was one of the best ever, but was one of the best that wore an Oilers Jersey)

Stats dont win cups.
IMO to be a great #1 goalie, you need to win games on your own.
Fuhr let in a lot of goals but he usually let in at least one less than the what the team scored.
I think Salo was a good goalie but then so is pretty much every goalie to get to the NHL or why would they be there but was he great?
Not in my opinion.
the hockey guy Posted - 02/17/2007 : 08:27:06
the leafs they have some promising prospects but they are in need of one if they are even gonna think about making a playoff run. Raycroft is a good backup

I know beans already said a lot about it.....But you need a little history lesson......Ranford was just as good as Fuhr buddy....He won the conne smythe in 1990...NO ONE thought they'd win in 1990, that was all Billy the Kid.....Remember that backwards diving glove save against Boston......YOU ARE A JOKE...what are you 12? That's the only excuse for you slamming ranford...He was a stud until he left...Those last years he was the ONLY good player on the team....WAKE UP!

You're a joke.....Bulin was the fundemental building block in tampa, he played very well each year he was there. I think his WORST numbers with tampa were in 2004, his team just happened to win the cup that year....He was great in phoenix/winnipeg. And Darren Puppa was great with tampa when he wasn't injured. Sadly, he was typically injured, but when he was healthy, he was solid.

I HATE CROSBY

Since Fuhr??? What about Ranford, Cujo, and Salo(before the Olympics)??

Roloson played well last night, but he is still a back up. Can't really string together more than a couple of good games in a row.

Khabibulin wasn't good?

Stats the year Tampa Bay won Stamley Cup:
Wins: 28
Losses: 19
Ties: 7
Shutouts: 3
Save %: .910
Goals Against Average: 2.33

Not bad in my opinion.
