Posted - 01/27/2011 : 14:38:36 The news of this injury made me sick to my stomach. As i alluded to in the Burns/Edler thread, this guy is a lot better than many fans prob realize, especially if you don't see him often.
The feeling around town here today amongst hockey fans and media ranges from "ah, we'll still be okay, we're deep" to "there's no way we win the cup without Edler healthy". Obviously we do not yet know how long he'll be out for sure but his absence will def be felt. Gillis was on the radio today saying all the usual things like "it gives others an opportunity" and "it helps a team come together", blah, blah, blah, but there's no doubt that they're gonna miss him.
I still think the Canucks are good enough to stay in the top 3 but we'll see them put to the test. Philly was able to stay hot without Pronger for a month and Det has been hit hard by injuries and remained near the tops so now it's the Canucks turn to dig deep! Here's hoping Ballard can continue to "find his game" here with some extra ice time and that the other injured guys get back soon!

Posted - 02/19/2011 : 23:10:20 the only silver lining of all these injuries is that we're getting a good look at all the Canuck defensive prospects that are filling the holes right now.
I've been plenty impressed with Chris Tanev, I think he must have jumped into the top position in terms of defensive prospects, and would be surprised if he doesn't make the team next year. He'll never score a bunch of points, but great poise in his own end, smart and mature for his age, and can skate.
Yann Sauve was very good tonight, he can hit and skate, good shutdown-type of guy.
Oberg played, but I didn't see too much of him. Likely more in the coming games...
All in all, I'm pretty comfortable with what we have on the farm for defensemen. |

Posted - 02/18/2011 : 21:59:04 ah, well than you haven't heard that Bieksa has been injured, 2-3 weeks with a broken foot... good news though, Hamhuis is supposed to be back Saturday or Monday, and Ballard is healing faster than expected. |

Btw, quit mentioning Ehrhoff and Salo's names around here!!! |

Posted - 02/17/2011 : 23:13:28 Ripley, don't be so sure - PHX, SJ, ANA are all within 15 points of VAN gunning for the top of the Pacific division, if VAN were to go on a serious downturn anything is possible. If they play .500 for the rest of the season, then I think you're right, a top-2 finish is ours. |

I wonder if you need to be cap compliant during the playoffs?
You do not have to be cap compliant during the playoffs, there is no cap. However, in order to be on the playoff roster though, I believe you have to have played at least one game with the team in the regular season, or a minimum number, or something like that. I'm not clear on it.
Believe it or not, the Canucks have no cap room for Phillips - only Edler and Alberts have been put on LTIR, as they are the only ones guaranteed to be out until playoffs. Ballard, Hamhuis, and Beiksa are all DTD, and with Salo back, the Canucks have less than 1M in cap space - not enough for much. If they bring in a player like Phillips, then they cannot fit other regular dmen into the lineup before the playoffs once they come back, and the NHL will give them all kinds of grief for that and possibly hold them off the playoff roster.
We'll ride the farm for now. Hey, good night tonight, we lost but Erhoff and Salo remain healthy... |

Posted - 02/17/2011 : 20:03:56 Previous posts about a rental D-man and no one mentions Chris Phillips from Ottawa. UFA and with all the injuries Van can easily fit him under the cap. Probably have to give up this year's 1st rounder this year or a prospect. I don't think Ottawa can ask for too much more than that.

yeah, that is the good news - most should be back before the end of the season, only Hamhuis and Edler are question marks for the playoffs - but word is that Hamhuis is showing positive recovery from concussion, and I have heard nothing bad (or good) regarding Edler, which I take to be good news for now.
First in the conference might be a challenge to maintain, but certainly a top-3 conference finish is looking near certainty. If we can show up for the playoffs with all 5 of them healthy again, watch out. |

Posted - 02/17/2011 : 09:44:52 wow. Bieksa out 2-3 weeks with a broken foot.
So, in the last 2 weeks, the Canucks have lost:
- Edler (until playoffs) - Hamhuis (unknown) - Ballard (until mid-March) - Alberts (until playoffs) - Bieksa (until early March)
5 of the top-6 are gone, only Erhoff is left from the opening day defensive roster top-6. Salo back helps a great deal of course. |

Yeah Leigh, we have hit the bottom. After Sauve, we can call up Connauton, Parent, and Oberg - but honestly, we're in danger of depleting the Moose at this point. |

Posted - 02/14/2011 : 22:02:36 wow, this is getting ridiculous. Alberts is now out with a broken wrist.
The Canucks have now lost 4 of their top-6 defensemen to significant injuries (3 weeks or more) in the last 2 weeks. |

Posted - 02/11/2011 : 14:51:09 well, I have to say I'm not surprised that he's concussed, he was hit pretty hard. That is bad news - probably worse than Edler and Ballard given the relative unknown timeline on it. Could be back next week, could be gone all season and playoffs.
Glad Salo is back, thats for sure. Plus, its assumed at this point that all 3 of Edler, Ballard, and (hopefully) Hamhuis will likely be back for the playoffs, so long term I'm not worried. |

Posted - 02/10/2011 : 10:10:51 yeah, watched the game, and was also puzzled by many of the non-calls. There seemed to be more uncalled infractions by ANA than VAN, but I guess it goes that way sometimes. I too am biased.
Yeah, it was a good game - I continue to be impressed with the Canucks resilience. A couple of years ago if we'd been down 3-0 in the middle of the second, you would have known the game was over. But now, you can't help but think they still have a real shot at a comeback, and sure enough they almost did - I was out of my chair when that puck went to Daniel and he missed, sure he was going to pot it. Can you imagine if we'd scored 2 goals in the final 30 seconds to tie?
That is the 3rd home game recently where we've mounted a seemingly improbable comeback against a good team that seemed to be outplaying us (the NSH game, back from 1-0 midway thru the 3rd period to win 2-1, and the CHI game, back from 2-1 and 3-2 midway thru the 3rd to win 4-3). Last night didn't end in victory, but I was impressed with the way we came back in the end. |

Nuxfan, assuming you watched the game, did it not seem strange the lack of penalties called? There were numerous instances where the crowd was freakin' out over non calls. The refs just seemed to put their whistles away as though it were a playoff game? Went both ways i suppose, though of course i notice the non calls against the Ducks more. There were a few instances where i thought that either a trip should be called, OR a dive, but one or the other should have been called!
All in all, not a great game, but a decent finish with a Sedin chance with under 2 seconds left to tie it! Bummer, what coulda been!

Posted - 02/10/2011 : 08:59:03 it looks like Hamhuis will be OK, AV said no concussion, and hopeful to play Saturday. Finally, some good news for the defense.
TRAV - Getzlaf is not known for dirty play, and I don't think that this play should have warranted a suspension. I do think there should have been a 2 minute boarding penalty, this was clearly boarding - the fact that he left his feet while making the hit is even worse. I'm sure he didn't mean to hurt him either, but when you have 35 pounds on a guy and you leave your feet to hit a player face-first into the boards, bad things are bound to happen.

The chances of Phoenix and Vancouver trading are slim to none as both are in the same conference and will potentially face each other come the playoffs. If any big trade is going to happen, it's going to be with To. Burkie is on his last legs there and I doubt he'll hurt his team by not doing a trade if the right trade came along. Especially since everyone he had issues with are no longer with the organization (owners). I mean it's not like he could possibly hate Dave Pratt that much.
It's got nothing to do with Pratt. However Burke and Nonis have a general hate-on for Vancouver for other reasons such as the "tampering allegations" regarding the Sedins before they were FA's. I'm not saying it can't be done, but i think BB would be very hesitant, unless it's a landslide win win situation for him, to deal with the Canucks, just in case the trade ended up favoring Vancouver. I don't think his ego could handle another blow as big as that one would be.
The Pratt comment was supposed to be a joke. |

I don't know Ryan personally, but he doesn't really have a reputation for dirty hits does he? I doubt he meant to injure him.

Posted - 02/09/2011 : 22:46:03 Just saw the replay and it looked a little to me like the Liambas / Fannelli hit from a year and half ago. Now, i have to stress, it looked like it from the opinion i had on that one.
Getzlaf looked to be ready to hit Hamhuis and at the last second, Hammer turns to throw the puck the other way and an already committed Getzlaf hits what is now his back/shoulder. He did appear to leave his feet but at best, i say it was borderline cheap. I don't for a second think it was a blatant cheapshot / dirty hit.
Either way, it was not a pretty site seeing Hamhuis collapse like that.... |

Posted - 02/09/2011 : 22:36:44 Nuxfan, i was at the game and not only didn't get a great view of it, but i didn't have the luxury of a replay (as you know, they don't often show controversial replays at the game). He certainly looked "out" as he went to the ice. His legs seemed to completely give out as though he was unconcious?
Keeping my fingers crossed and watching Sportsnet for a replay now that i'm home!

Hamhuis down tonight, after a pretty vicious board (not called) by Getzlaf. It looked like he lost consciousness on the ice, before being helped off. I'm guessing concussion, but no word yet on the extent.
Edler, Ballard, Hamhuis all down in the last 2 weeks. Salo due back on Saturday thankfully, but our depth is being tested for sure. |

Utemin.....do you watch the Canucks? Are you really a fan? I'm serious, cuz you say a lot of strange things. How in the world you can call Ballard one of our top 2 dmen since Jan 1 is beyond me? Hamhuis and Ehrhoff have both been better, and while that may be my opinion, it's as close to FACT as you will get.
Ballard has improved some, but he's still got a long way to go to be back to the level he was playing at in Florida and to come anywhere close to being one of our two best???
Have a look at the TOI for the dmen and you'll notice who gets the most playing time. That often tells you who's playing best in case you didn't know....

Also, it looks like Ballard's injury might be less serious than thought - its clearly not broken as he's walking on it, but they're concerned about ligament damage, MRI today. I'm with Alex, I would have preferred a break - at least you know that they'll be back in a pre-determined amount of time. Soft tissue and ligament issues can linger... |

I've always heard that a bad sprain is worse than a break (assuming the break doesn't require surgery) so either way, he's likely out for 6-8 weeks.
I watched the video of it again and while his ankle gets caught under him, it appears his knee took the worst of it! Hopefully nothing is torn (an acl would cost him 6months) and it's either a clean break or a sprain??? Be really tough if he's gone for the season after what Edler is going through! |

Hmmmm, thought for sure it was an ankle sprain. Either way, as you said, it's another serious injury on the back end for the Canucks. Nuxfan, did you watch the whole game? I only saw the first period and part of the 2nd. With Rome out for 17mins in penalties and Ballard lost, i heard they may need Burrows to play some D? Did he?
I was at the game. The Ballard injury happened about 2 minutes in, so they played the entire game with 5 dmen again. I think its more than a sprain, Ballard was in a *lot* of pain, and had to be helped off the ice, no weight on the leg in the tunnel either.
Yeah, it got dicey after Rome fought Neil - he got 17 minutes in penalties (thankfully he didn't get the game misconduct for instigating), we were down to 4 dmen for 17 minutes, including some penalty killing time. You can't play long with only 4 dmen, and the Spezza goal was a great example of why - he scored on a 3-on-none breakdown, I have never seen one before...
The defense looked pretty tired by the end of the game, we were hanging on in the end. Thankfully our opponent was OTT, they didn't look particularly good last night.
Salo is probably a week away from joining, and I think they'll recall Tanev again. Unlike Edler, its certain that Ballard will be back in time for the playoffs, even with a break, so I'm not too worried. |
