Good call, that makes sense as well.
His $6.7M is too much for his value imho, but he is a UFA at the end of next season, so he could help a team get to the salary floor just for next season. |

What the hell is going on in Washington??
Here's their current situation:
-- They are $1.8M over the cap
-- clearly they have to let UFAs Arnott and Scott Hannan go without an offer
-- They still have RFA Alzner to take care of (I would think they want to keep him very badly)
-- even after this, they have this long list of FAs coming up next summer: Green, Semin, Fehr, Knuble, Wideman, Chimera, Halpern, Carlsson, DJ King, Beagle and Vokoun. So they are going to be right back at it next summer.
They are going to have to trade their way out of this jam or buy out any 2 of Knuble, Poti and Chimera (there are simply NO other buyout candidates as the rest of their roster is either stars, up-and-comers, recent acquisitions/re-signings, or too low of a salary for a buyout to work).
I suppose they could trade away one of the buyout players I suggested...that would be much better move. Like Knuble to Detroit for a 4th rounder perhaps?

Can't believe how much a players stock can drop in such a short amount of time. A Christmas time most people would have said Kaberle would be a big ticket free agent. A couple of average months and he literally signed for the same money he was making before.

the NHL is investigating the Talbot deal for cap circumvention, apparently because the last 2 years of the deal are less than half of the salary amount of either of the first 2 years.
The Richards and Ehrhoff deals got around this small inconvenience by simply making large chunks of the first 2 years of the contract signing bonus - in both those cases the "salary" for years 1 and 2 is only 2M, which means the final 2 years can be 1M each. However, "signing bonuses" that add 10M and 8M respectively to the contracts in each of the first 2 years is apparently not cap circumvention.
Hilarious. If only Lou had figured that loophole out, he could have had Kovalchuk for a 3M cap hit and given him 50M in signing bonuses over those years... or better yet, get him to the league minimum and give him the rest as a bonus? I can't believe that a signing bonus end-run around "salary" was missed in the CBA? |

I'm pretty sure that Alzner fits into their plans for the future - 5th overall pick 3 years ago, only 22 but playing in their top-4 as a very solid defensive dman. They're going to have to make room to sign him, or someone is going throw an offer sheet at him that WSH may have a hard time matching. My guess would be that he'll command 1.75-2M a season on his next contract.
Brower will probably command 1-1.5M, so right away WSH has 3M-ish more they have to sign.
Knuble and Chimera are likely victims, and both together would cover off their shortcoming. I don't think that Fehr is going anywhere either, see reasons for them keeping Alzner. Still, certainly doable, they just aren't finished yet. |

I didn't want to make it sound like they should get rid of him. Just saying that they have a lot of defense to chose from. So they can easily get rid of anybody else. I believe I said one of them wont make the cut.
And for Holtby, true, I was just trying to say that they don't have much cap issues like nuxfan pointed out. A couple of players out and a couple of RFA's signed. They are tight against the cap but they do have some players that are expendables like Beans said about Poti. |

There is no way the Caps let Alzner go he was in their top defense pairing last year and has great chemistry with Carlson. Also they are not really in need of a third goalie Braeden Holtby is very capable.

First off, yes, was very happy to hear Brad signed with the Rangers. Hopefully he can find some chemistry with Gaborik, and help turn around the Rangers awful PP.
I'd like to see the Rangers bring back Vinny Prospal now. Not only was he one of the best Rangers down the stretch (had 23 points in 29 games after coming back from injury), but he's had some good chemistry in the past playing with Brad Richards in TB. I don't see it happening though...once they sign their 4 RFA's (Callahan, Dubinsky, Anisimov, Boyle), they'll have 14 NHL forwards, with young a couple of young guys sure to make a push in camp as well.
So i was wrong, Vokoun did indeed sign with the Capitals! I thought they were content at least going into the season with their young tandem in goal, but picking up Vokoun is a huge upgrade...especially at $1.5 million! I had already said when i posted yesterday morning that i really liked what the Capitals have done so far...well even more so now with Vokoun in the mix. |

If Lombardi can come back to form he will be a good acquisition. This will give them more depth on the top six and he could easily take MacArthur spot.
But I think Cody Franson is the best part of this deal, they get a 23 years old defenseman that is 6 foot 5. Nashville definitly wanted to get rid of Lombardi's salary (7 million for two seasons) and for that they gave a better player away in Franson and got Lebda and a prospect (Stanley)
Franson for this season is .800 salary and is a RFA next season. Lebda has a 1.45 million contract for this season and is a UFA next season. |

Wow that's the craziest thing. Philly unloads to sign Bryzgalov. Washington trades away their second goalie for a first and a second rounder. A first rounder that is potentially a top 5 pick. Then they upgrade significantly their goaltending situation by signing Vokoun to a bargain.
In my mind, so far, Washington are the clear winners in the offseason.
On a side note Toronto lost the sweepstake for Richards so they got Connoly. It's good and an upgrade but still not scary, they at least now have an option and can put Bozak where he should be, centering the third line. Hopefully Tim Connoly can stay healthy for the most part and play 2 seasons of 70 games or more. |

I'm anxiously awaiting the Brad Richards decision. He's already stated he'll make up his mind this today...hopefully it's sometime this morning! With the Richards/Rangers rumors starting before the trade deadline, i'm going to be VERY disappointed if he signs elsewhere. It'd be a dream come true to have Brad a Ranger.

Not sure if I missed the posts, but the Oilers signed Barker to a 1 year 2.25 mil deal, Hordichuk to a 1 year deal Im not sure of the money, Ben Eager for 3 years 3.4 mil deal, Belanger to a 3 year deal, and traded Foster for Sutton. They also released Souray, who was then signed by Dallas on a 1 year 1.6 mil deal I beleive. Dallas also signed Ryder to a 2 year $7 million deal.
Garon is backing up Roloson again, Budaj is in Montreal Giguere is in Colorado, Auld is back in Ottawa, and Florida signed Bergenheim.
