Posted - 11/16/2007 : 19:46:28 Iwas just watching Sportscentre and they said Tavares has 23 goals in 21 games. 52 points in that time. That puts him on pace for almost 200 points as a 17 year old. That's pretty amazing.
All I've seen of this kid are the games he played in the so-called "Super Series", which was not that super thanks to a crappy Russian junior team. He was good, but to me, didn't stand out that much (mind you, he was a 16 year old playing with 19 year olds).
For you guys who live in the east...is he really as good as it appears, or are there reasons his numbers are inflated other than ability? |

First....Crosby's numbers in the Q were not outstanding?
Here are some of his junior accomplishments:
Canadian Hockey League CHL Rookie of the Year - 2004 CHL Player of the Year - 2004, 2005 Leading Scorer - 2004, 2005 Canada Post Cup (three stars) - 2004, 2005 Top Pro Prospect - 2005 Memorial Cup All-Star Team - 2005 Ed Chynoweth Trophy (Memorial Cup Leading Scorer) - 2005
Quebec Major Junior Hockey League RDS/JVC Trophy (rookie of the year) - 2004 QMJHL All-Rookie Team - 2004 QMJHL First All-Star Team - 2004, 2005 Michel Briere Trophy (most valuable player) - 2004, 2005 Jean Béliveau Trophy (league leading scorer) - 2004, 2005 Mike Bossy Trophy (best professional prospect) - 2005 Paul Dumont Trophy (Personality of the Year) - 2004, 2005 Guy Lafleur Trophy (Playoff MVP) - 2005 Michel Bergeron Trophy (offensive rookie of the Year) - 2004 Offensive Player of the Year - 2004, 2005
Also, he a "satisfactory" NHL player? How many satisfactory players get these awards in their first two years?
NHL Art Ross Trophy - 2007 Lester B. Pearson Award - 2007 Hart Memorial Trophy - 2007 NHL First All-Star Team - 2007 NHL All-Rookie Team - 2006 Rookie of the Month - October 2005 All-Star Game - 2007 Mark Messier Leadership Award - Jan. 2007
I think you really need to lower your expectations of what is outsanding, bro.

Posted - 11/17/2007 : 12:41:52 You have to keep in mind that he is not playing with NHL calibre players. In fact, only a couple of the guys he plays with will ever see any NHL action. So the fact that he is putting up these types of numbers is even more impressive. Look at Crosby, as an example. He had very good numbers in the Q, but they weren't outstanding. He did not stand out in his only Memorial Cup, and his team didn't win it. Yet he has turned into satisfactory player... This kid is the real deal. The fact that there is an effort in place to make him eligible for this year's entry draft is proof of that.

He did not deserve first line minutes, that is why he was not getting them...

He is a good player there is no doubt, but where was he at the "Super Series", I did not see anything outstanding.
Let us see if he can dominate at the world Juniors in December...
As for the draft, he will have to waite until 2009...

The O only has a 68 game sched...hmm...I was thinking 78.
He'll certainly miss games due to the WJC...I wasn't making a prediction, just stating that this was his pace...
Either way, the kid has some skillz. |

I compare Taveres to Dany Heatley. The both have the goal-scoring touch, skate nearly identically and have a passion for the game. But the one thing Taveres can do that Heatley can't is dominate a league. |

72 Goals and 62 Assists totaling 134 Pts.
Now, that's not something we have not seen before. But it is a nice statistic to have on your record. :) And on pace for 200 or more pts.

Posted - 11/16/2007 : 21:19:23 He has the ability. He is an excellent player for his age. He's fast and skillfull with the puck. For a player to run the OHL like he has, at his age, is an excellent accomplishment.

There was talk of changing NHL draft rules to allow him in early... :/ That speaks for it self, imo.
