Consider that AIG, the lead sponsor for Manchester United ponies up $14 million pounds a year(That $25 million Canadian or $23.7 million US) it a huge opporunity. Sure, not all the teams could get that kind of cash, but the big dogs (TO, Montreal, NY, Detroit) could pull in potentially $15-$20 million for a lead sponser, that's huge.
Tell me an owner that wouldn't take 40% of their total cap hit to have the name of a company on the jersey.
As an owner, I wouldn't even think about this. It's a no brainer. Some fans might have a bee in their bonnet for a while, but it wouldn't take long. Consider that it wasn't long ago that the home team wore white jerseys and most people forget about that.
It's a non issue and a huge cash cow for the teams and the league overall. Geez, one decent sponsor and 12,000 fans a game and Phoenix breaks even! |
