To be totally honest.. I don't have a really good answer here. There is not a single D man playing for a Canadian team that I think that has the overall gumption to be thought of as the 'best'. There are a heckuva lotta very good dmen, but an elite-elite? Nope..

Offensivly, I think Sheldon Souray is the best. But overall it has to be the great Tomas Kaberle...so silky smooth. lol.

ohlund is very underrated. sure, he may not rack up the points but hes getting a respectable 27 points. If you watch this guy during his games he has such a great feel reading plays. Everytime theres a chance for the other team you always hear ohlunds name breaking up the play with either hsi stick or his shot blocking. he is by far the best defenseman the canucks ever had up to date

Ok, so they should be forwards...
PainTrain Posted - 03/08/2007 : 17:17:08
Souray or Phaneuf i like Souray because of his shot and really good at power play and same with Phaneuf one of those two.

GO Sabres GO!!!!!!

Dion Phaneuf is the best!
Buddyno2000 Posted - 03/07/2007 : 19:41:32
How can anyone say Souray?, just like McCabe he gets to much credit because he's a good offensive D, but they're just simply bad on the defensive side of the puck.

Oh no. Oooooooh no. OOOOOOOOOH NO YOU DIDN'T!!! I know who you are now so you won't be hiding!

Ok, I'm going to stay brief on this because it is off topic. Miikka Kiprusoff has a Win% of 0.550. Let's see some goalies who have BETTER Win%'s:

Johan Holmqvist
Andrew Raycroft
Ray Emery
Martin Biron... To name a few. Yet Miikka Kiprusoff is considered an elite goalie and not one of these guys is? I couldn't care less about GAA and SV% because it's not wins, it's just side stats. Doesn't that spell overrated? Sure Nabokov has played badly the last two years and that's simply because he's not as good as he used to be, but he's still pretty good for a backup. Heck, he has two back-to-back shutouts and in 23 games less than Kippersucks, he has the same amount of SO, which happens to be 2nd-best in the league.

Don't get me started on comparing Toskala to Kippersucks. Toskala has the best Win% of any goalie IN THE LEAGUE, YEAH BETTER THAN BRODEUR AND LUONGO (0.686) and he gets no credit. I know he hasn't played as many games but he's been injured lately. He's still played 35 games, which means that it's no fluke that his record is so good, he can do it. Let's see how well Calgary does with McLennan in net 60% of the time, then you'll appreciate San Jose's goalie duo.

Souray blows.

P.S. I started a new thread

...Btw, about the "good goaltending" you say the Flames have--I'm sure babs will be glad to differ on that ...

TCT I like your assessment of Kippers tending but I'm not sure I would say that the Flames have been experiencing "woes" lately??? But this may be the wrong forum to discuss it.

Phaneuf is young and will need time but I watch a fair amount of games and his positioning is pretty good. Certainly his offense is his strength at this time but +19 is pretty nice.

I think Phaneuf has the potential to improve from here in the seasons to come. I put him on my GOAT team because of his offensive talent, his potential as a defenseman, and his high +/- . Btw, about the "good goaltending" you say the Flames have--I'm sure babs will be glad to differ on that

Calgary still gets excellent goaltending. Sure, they dont play the complete trap any more, so Kipper has to try and save a few more difficult shots than he's used to, but they can certainly not fault him for their team woes.

My good friend/rival is a huge Flames fan so I'm forced to endure watching them play far too often. Trust me, Phaneuf makes bonehead defensive plays like you would not believe. He's still very young, so he has the time to learn that part of the game, but he's not close yet. As for his +19, that's largely inflated due to the style of game the Flames play and very good goaltending. He's even 3rd on the +/- depth-chart on his own team.

Ok, maybe 'sieve' was too strong as he is not horrible.. but put in the context when we are discussing 'Best Defensemen', he is a 'relative sieve' at the moment. ;)

I like Phaneuf, and would love to have him on my team. I think he's got an incredibly bright future. Just currently, of all the aspects of his game, he has to work on his positioning, one-on-one coverage, and the 'thinking' part of the game a lot more to move up my rankings.

I would say Sheldon Souray..

ps. Always put an "Other" option

The fellow above said that Dion Phaneuf is weak. I was simply stating he is very high on +/- while playing a lot of minutes. This indicates to me he is not weak, but quite solid.
bablaboushka Posted - 03/07/2007 : 17:24:15
Not sure I understand that...

Wade Redden.

I would describe Souray the exact same way TC did Phaneuf. Redden is a just a great all-around player with amazing vision and even better stretch passes. Him and Zubov have to be the two best at those.
tctitans Posted - 03/07/2007 : 16:41:59
I can't believe Phaneuf is even on this list.
He is gifted offensively and has some great hits, but defensively he's a huge sieve.

Yeah, Matty Ohlund isnt canadian either, but he's my vote

CANUCKS RULE!!

By "in Canada" I hope you mean "on a Canadian team" because Thomas Kaberle is not Canadian.

Anyway, I said Phaneuf.
