Posted - 10/31/2007 : 14:39:06 If you could only choose one player from each of the:
50s 60s 70s 80s 90s 2000s
to make up a first all-star team of the greatest ever, what would your team look like?
You have to go by when the player was in his prime. If you take Orr, you have to count him as your 70s player. If you take Gretzky, you have to count him as your 80s player. And then, thats it, no other player from the 70s, 80s, etc. can be taken other than the one you choose to represent it. Just one player to represent one decade
And you have to have a line-up just the way the 1st All Stars would be picked – one left winger, one center, one right winger, two defensemen and one goalie.
Kind of an old topic, but I think it has an interesting new twist. Not as easy as you might think at first glance.

The only guy I would have really liked to put on the team is Lemieux, but then I would have to take out Gretzky or Messier. Tough choice.I still think I'm pretty tough to beat.

Oh, and thanks for the compliment Beans. But don't be too hard on other Bruins fans. We have been through a lot of tough times!
Lemieux over Messier any day. ANY day. Messier's number one attribute was that he was a leader. On a team of leader's, that's not so helpful as Super Mario.

The weakness of this team is the difference in goaltending of today's hockey... Plante could not survive to a single period agains bussy, Messier, Lemieux and Niedermayer...
Two things. Orr is on your second team???
Plante couldn't last 1 period today?

Yeah... It was a tough choice but with one player per decade restriction it hard to make a well balance team... I have to make tough choice lol.
When plante was between pipe : 1- Slap shot did not exist 2- equipement (skate and stick) was not developed as today: the game is faster now compare to the 50s...
With those reality, Gretsky, bourque and lafleur (player of my first team) would have score 4 goal each in the first period... |

Guy, what are you thinking?? I though you might know me a little by now. You left Gretzky off your roster. Bad Move. I'm sending Bobby Hull out to break the ankle of both Howe and what ever centre you put in there instead of the Hockey God.
Big mistake. Now you have to play me 5 on 3.
Wayne or Bobby?? How about both!!!
Bobby Hull is a Lady Binger, he doesn't roll that way.
But even if he did break Howe's ankle, Howe would continue to play and then proceed to take each of your players out. Howe was all about retribution. He trumps every player on your team in the tough department.

Posted - 11/01/2007 : 22:14:44 Man, this is hard! Whose crazy idea was this anyway?
Beans - you're going to scream, but I'm putting Messier on the left side as my rep for the 80s.
50s - Harvey - D 60s - Howe - RW 70s - Orr - D 80s - Messier - LW 90s - Roy - G 2000s - Crosby - C
Can I criticize the guy who started this thread? What a nut! I mean, what's the point of this? It's not that fun and it proves absolutely nothing!
Who is this Andyhack guy anyway?
Good night! |

Posted - 10/31/2007 : 20:29:11 0843 - The Rocket was a right winger though so you have to choose between him or Howe for that position.
Interesting about left wingers isn't it Willus. Some not exactly household names on the list of all-stars from the 50s - Ed Sanford, Danny Lewicki, Real Chevrefils, Camille Henry...
Beans - I don't know exactly how they determine what position you qualify for when they are doing the All-stars, but Messier was considered a left-winger in the early 80s when it came time for the selections as you can see. So he can be a left winger for the 80s but I think should be considered a centre for the '90s given that he was selected as a first team Centre in 89/90 and 91/92.
If you absolutely had to say one position for Messier though, would you say centre? He obviously doesn't fit the pure left winger category the way guys like Bobby Hull or Steve Shutt do. Nor does he fit the pure centre category. Centre just seems a bit closer as an overall categorization to me though. But not being an Edmonton or Western Canadian guy, do tell me if that impression is wrong.
I suppose the fact that he could be shifted around is one of the reasons I rate him so highly though. |

With the greatest of all time in the 60-90s in their respective positions, 'm left with a D and W in the 2000s and 50s. Couldn't think of a winger currently worthy of that list so had to put the only D that could be worthy in the 00s and the greatest winger in the 50s.

Posted - 10/31/2007 : 18:32:14 Well Beans, I had to make sacrifices. I chose the second best LW of all time and a centre that is arguably as good as Gretzky. I couldn't get Hull because there was no way I was giving up Howe and Orr. Lemieux and Bourque are interchangeable for 80's and 90's That left Brodeur as an easy pick for 00's. I wanted a left wing from the 80's so I could have Harvey for the 50's and then Lemieux for the 90's but there just isn't an 80's LW good enough. Historically LW has always been the weakest position.

Now I had to take out Gordie Howe!!
Still like my line up however. Would have liked Lemiuex and Messier on the team, but I can't take out WG.

Posted - 10/31/2007 : 15:27:14 Sorry, I meant to put that on the first post, but my wife asked me some question about something and I got distracted (blaming the wife - VERY LOW - don't do that in the future, kids!).
Anyway, I'm curious who you will take instead of Mess - Interesting just how well-regarded Kariya was in the 90s on the left side, isn't it?
Or does this mean you will juggle your line-up now?
I had 4 friends in elementary school, 24 friends in high school and 77 friends in university, if you know what I mean!. |
