Posted - 03/06/2012 : 07:56:44 The Al's...Iafrate and McInnis...could both let 'er RIP. No doubt about it. Sometimes...back on the blueline...they had a little more time to set it up and let 'er go.
But the hardest slapshots EVER came from the Hulls...Bobby and Dennis. In THAT era...the game was more wide open at times...and they had time to carry the puck, pick up speed and then completely step into it. The added velocity from their moving with the puck gave them 10 - 15 MORE mph than we generally see today.
Another guy who could really hammer a slap shot was the Big M. I remember one night in Toronto the Leafs were playing Detroit. Frank hit one as hard as he ever had. Terry Sawchuck got his glove on it. The force, weight and speed of the puck almost ripped Sawchuk's catching glove off and the puck easily continued on out of the glove and into the net. Mahovlich might well be in the all-time top 6 or 7 and, like Bobby and Dennis should most definitely be included on the choices list.
This is like a best songs of all-time poll. If it only includes what the listener knows...well... sometimes THAT doesn't go back any where near far enough to be valid.
As for wooden sticks versus today's version[s]...I don't think that the difference is as much as it's cracked up to be. As a matter of fact if I was a coach NO defenceman on my team would use a composite stick...except in a shootout. And NO ONE killing a penalty would have one out on the ice. They break too easily and suddenly you're 2 or 3 men down.
And while we're at it...no one would be wearing those mini gloves either. Gotta protect the wrists.
Who the cap fits...Let them wear it. |

Posted - 01/05/2012 : 05:15:32 I'd vote MacInnis in the combined Power+Accuracy category but I was pleasantly surprised by Spezza at the Sens skill competition this year. He blasted it for 103.8 and also got 4 out of 4 in accuracy.
Of course, the accuracy competition isn't done with slap shots. His slap shot accuracy is horrendous. |

Al MacInnis late 106's mph Al Iafrete 108ish mph Bobby Hull 119ish mph
The best current, but do not even compete with the all time bests...
Sheldon Souray early 106's mph Zdeno Chara 105ish mph
Where'd this info come from? When Iafrate set the record, he did so with 105.2. Chara then broke it with 105.4 and eventually 105.9.
There's (unconfirmed) rumours of a Bobby Hull 118, but I doubt it... Particularly when you consider they were still on wooden sticks and how no one else is even relatively close. The recognized world record is some guy called Kulyash in the KHL with 110.3.

Posted - 01/04/2012 : 12:45:20 The 3 best of all time are not even on the list. In no particular order:
Bobby Hull Al MacInnis Al Iafrate
After these 3, maybe someone from the list.
This is like having a list of the best offensive players of all time and not having Lemieux or Gretzky on it. |

Posted - 12/22/2011 : 22:35:01 Best Slapshot??
Definitely the first one with Paul Newman!
The sequels were terrible! Especially Slap Shot 2 (Breaking The Ice)! Stephen Baldwin and Gary Busey were horrible!
Slap Shot 3 (The Junior League) was just as bad. Even Leslie Nielsen couldn't save this bad flick. Mark Messier and Doug Gilmour provided cameo appearances, which I'm sure they regret!
So hands down, the first Slap Shot is by far the best of the three movies!! |

Posted - 11/11/2010 : 23:32:17 Steven Stamkos deserves a spot here. Yeah, he's still a young player, but currently, he has the sickest shot in the NHL. Better than Ovechkin and Crosby. |

I also remember Al Iafrate holding the title of the fastest for a while?? Just reading all the posts above, and got to say, maybe we should click on no posts from anonymous peeps? |

Guest4876 |
Posted - 11/19/2009 : 08:59:55 Dennis and Bobby Hull (Brett's uncle and father, it's in the blood) - 120+ wooden stick
Dennis Hull's shot was harder than brother Bobby. The difference according to comments i heard by the two was that Dennis was a little wild while Bobby was much more accurate. The 120+mph slapshot beats the current 108mph by the new guys with the composite sticks. MacInnis and Iafrate were never in the Hull class even in their prime. |
Guest8954 |
Posted - 11/18/2009 : 00:07:03 Chara now has the NHL's hardest shot. Beat Iafrate's record this year in the skills contest. Not sure if its the most accurate, but for current NHL players he is definitely my top pick. As for all time combining power and accuracy I'd have to say MacInnis, it is what he was known for. |

Posted - 11/17/2009 : 20:41:03 The player who wins the sklll competition during the all star game is usually clocked around 100 mph.
Bobby Hull was clocked at 120 mph, not even close. |

Tiller....the wooden stick had nothing to do with it. But i will admit, the "dirty skullett" definitely did! |

Posted - 11/16/2009 : 17:57:04 I can't believe you didn't include Al MacInnis. Didn't he break Grant Fuhr's ribs or something with his shot? Scott Stevens shouldn't be on the list for hardest shot in my opinion, but he wins for hardest hitter. No question. He has his own top 10 for his body checks! |

Posted - 11/06/2009 : 22:56:30 For me, it was Al MacInnis. Awesome . . . wooden stick. Pinpoint accuracy. Hardest shot. And . . . he was an all around great player.
You young guys - people hit the goddamn ice - I mean, like a bomb or gunshot went off - when MacInnis wound up and the shot went a bit high. He had scary velocity on his slapshot, and he scored most of his goals from the dot, or around the circle inside the offensive zone - it has to be a good shot from there.
honourable mention to Brett Hull, but again - he couldn't compete with the velocity that MacInnis had, and he took a lot of shots from 15 feet away.
Can't mention names I didn't grow up watching.

How young are you people? Most of the players on the list only started playing in the NHL after 2000 and we are talking about an all time list. Puh-lease. Start with the list Willus had and go from there. This is an all time list not a list of right now or in the last 9 years. |

Posted - 10/18/2009 : 06:37:36 Wow this list is so wrong.
No Al MacInnis No Al Iafrete No Bobby Hull No Boom Boom Geofrion
And you have McCabe, Stevens, Weber, Ovechkin (they are all great, but we are talking best SLAP shots ALL time)
Anyway, Al MacInnis had the hardest with a wooden stick and Brett Hull had the best one timer. Boom Boom and Bobby Hull were great ambassadors in the slap shot. Chara has the hardest shot today. |
