how much money do u think leafs will have to give to gustavsson to get him to sign the next years on.

Wow, did I totally mis read this question!!
How much for the Monster? Well, most back ups worth their salt are sitting between $1-$1.5 million. However, knowing that Giguere is not signed after next year, if Burke wants Gustavsson to be the next one, it will cost him more.
I would suspect you will see a 3 yr deal worth around $8 million. A shade more than $2.5 million a season. |

| why should it cost the leafs bigtime to keep the monster ?? what has he done to deserve a big contract ?? looks like a so-so goalie to me..always out of position, gives up big rebounds. 1 - 1.5 million per season is all id give him. leafs should offer J.S,gig 12 million for a 3 year contract extension. he will still only be 36 at the contracts end. If you havent got a top goalie in the NHL...you got NOTHIN... |

| right now I'd offer him no more then a back up goalie's salary, then have him play a full season in the minor's. he's just not ready yet and it's better the riding the pine for the whole season. |

I'd have to agree with the Guest here, a little.
Gustavsson has not proven he is even a contender for the #1 position on any NHL team, including the leafs. He has plenty of European league experience, but no NHL experience.
The Leafs do not want to lose him, so they may have to offer the $2.5 million range, but his worth is that of a normal backup goaltender. $1-$1.5 million. No more.

Well, with the way Giggy has started for the Leafs, I think Toronto fans are starting to realise what life is like with a real goalie . . . and if the beginning of his tenure is any indication, Giguere will have a rejuvenated season playing very solid in goal after getting signed to a two or three year deal.
That is just a guess; however, I must guess what is happening to Giggy before deciding on what is happening to Gustavsson. As a Leaf fan, I am in full agreement with most here: the Monster is not ready yet, and deserves to be a back-up only right now. I say a two year deal for 1 mil each, with incentive based bonuses.

God im torn here i'm a habs fan ,,, but by god has Giguere always been my favorite goalie,, i'm hoping he never lets another goal in but somehow the leafs still lose??? is that possible? hahhaa

I like your numbers better than mine, but as an RFA he doesn't have to sign something he doesn't like. We have experiences from the Hudler situation of last year than and RFA can cut and run to the KHL or even back to Sweden if he doesn't like the dollars. Not sure, he seems like a good kid who likes TO, but who's to say that Ufa doesn't offer him $5million to play in the KHL next year??
I think your $1 million might be a bit low and my $2.5 million a year might be too high. Maybe closer to $1.75 would do it??? |

Im with beans, i think he gets just under 2 mil.
Gustavsson has been quoted as saying he really looks forward to working with someone "who can show him what it takes to be an NHL starter", which is a nice little jab at toskala. I think he wants to be here, and I think he knows he will be the backup for a least another season, probably more.
Burke wont pay his backup 2.5mil, he'll slot in somewhere between 1.5-2mil. He still needs time to adjust to the north american style and to the style of Francois Allaire before his true potential can be realized.

On TSN.ca today I read Gustavsson signed a contract extension for 2 years @ an average of 1.35 million per season. Pretty good signing in my books. I think Burke is taking this team in the right direction and he is sure putting his stamp on it. I think the price is just right and it gives the Leafs room to sign Iginla. Gustavsson's numbers weren't all that bad last season considering it was his first year. 16-15-9, 2.87 GAA, .902 Save%. It is said that he played 42 games this year so he must have been pulled twice, again not too bad.
When Hell freezes over, I'll play hockey there too. |
