Does anyone else here think the Leafs could have got a little bit more for a consistent 20 goal scorer, if only for a rental??

Why even bother adding Skoula to the deal, is Caputi that good a prospect that we had to take Skoula as a salary dump (all, $122,000 of his $575,000 worth)... I mean really what was the point of Skoula in this deal.

Why get a rental when the team is out of the playoffs???

Ponikarovsky is a UFA at the end of the year and obviously Burke had no intetion to resign him. Skoula fills a roster spot today and is a big body (6'3"-230 lbs) for the rest of this year and Caputi is a prospect with some potentail.

So Burke trades Poni for Skula this year and have Caputi for this year, next year, and is an RFA not a UFA.

That's a fair deal for TO. Not much more could have been had for a UFA and a middle of the road on at that.

Pretty sure Skula was only thrown in to make this deal fit for the Pen's cap space. At least, that is what the boys on sportscenter said tonight.

Beans, pretty sure he meant Poni is the rental?

Either way, i see no prob adding Skoula. The prospect is the main piece but be it a salary need or whatever, Skoula may help some of the youngsters along?

Yup that was me last night, and yes I meant Poni as the rental.

Reading over some articles on the trade I guess it's starting to make more sense. Caputi is better than a 2nd round pick and is ready now. Poni wouldn't have garnered a 1st.

As for skoula I believe it was to make the cap hits work and he will may even be dealt by 3:00pm today. I don't think he was brought on to bolster the crowded defence or mentor the kids.

I guess I just hadn't heard too much about Caputi, but when you see a pick in the deal it's easier to quantify the value.

Skoula was not brought in to mentor anyone, he was forced on Burke so the pens could make their cap work. Skoula will probably either be dealt before today is over or he will fill out the 7th d man spot for the rest of the season as someone like XLB will probably be dealt today as well. Either that or he will go to the Marlies.

Poni was a solid Maple Leaf, 20 goals a season isnt too shabby but he was very inconsistant for a guy with decent hands, a good shot and a big body. He should help Pittsburghs playoff push regardless as he is definatley an upgrade on Malkins wing over Pascal Dupuis.

Caputi is a strong kid with offensive skill, he is from the GTA if im not mistaken and already has had productive seasons in the AHL. Scouts say he is tough to play against which is something Burke is after. I think the Leafs brass are targeting young players with Pro experience and are a little further ahead in their development than taking a chance on 2nd,3rd round picks. Although im sure they will acquire at least 1 mid round pick today

Caputi is someone ive had an eye on for a couple seasons now and im happy the leafs were able to acquire him, the rebuild continues...

There is no "I" in team, but there is an "M" and an "E".

Indeed it is, from a Toronto standpoint, it's now Alexei Ponikorovsky for Luca Caputi & a 5th rounder.

Good deal for both sides, I think (let's just call Skoula a 5th rounder at this point).

Luca Caputi is a very solid prospect in the Burke mold . . . he has some questions supposedly (needs work on skating), but he's a big kid with a tireless work ethic, and he's a hometown lad.

On the other hand, Poni is a very solid 1st/2nd rental winger who wins the stats lottery by getting to play with either Crosby or more probably Malkin for the stretch run and playoffs. I'll say it here, anyone who has Poni in a draft just got lucky! Anyways, it would be hard to imagine that Poni is a bust in Pittsburgh playing with a very, very talented Malkin, his countryman . . . Poni is consistent, and has a decent work ethic, and has a reasonable amount of skill.

Great deal actually when you see how stingy some of these deals are... Scott Walker just went for a 7th...
