Kansas??? Yeee-Haww!! Lets's all chase that rubber thing around on the ice!!! Last September I attended the Oilers-Coyotes game in Winnipeg and I couldv'e swore that I was at a game 7 stanley cup final!! The atmosphere was unbelievable and when the Oilers won 5-0 the roof almost came off the place, during an EXHIBITION game! I don't know if it will ever happen, but Winnipeg fans deserve another crack at the NHL. Oh by the way, keep an eye open for Oilers goalie prospect Devon Dubnyk. This kid made some unbelieveable stops en route to his shutout performance. Looked like an NHL veteran!

Winnipeg lost one team. Why give them the opportunity to lose another. They do not have the population nor the corporate sponsors to make it work. I completely agree that Kansas City is not a good destination for the NHL. The only reason he is looking there is because they have a new arena. I say move it to Seattle. That way I can drive down to see Crosby and Malkin light it up. |

Well if the Penguins are gonna move, I guess Winnipeg would be a good place for them. "The Kansas City Penguins"?? That sounds even worse than the "Winnipeg Penguins". Plus, Winnipeg used to have an NHL team and people up there would probably appreciate it more than people in Kansas. |

Winnipeg would be the best place for dedicated fans and hockey in general but not for business. I just think we simply don't have enough resources and people to support a NHL team. Yeh, we may have hosted all the rallies and collected enough signatures, but how many of those people would dish out at least $20 (i don't really know what the prices of cheapest seats are) on a daily basis. Winnipeggers in my opinion just don't have enough money. Collecting signatures and signing your name is one thing, but actually taking money out of your pocket is another.

Having lived there for 13 years myself (1988-2001), I know the city has the fanbase for Moose games, mainly because ticket prices are relatively low. I don't know if Winnipeg could fill the rink every game, 41 games a year where ticket prices could easily triple. I would love to see it, but I bet Winnipeg is Mario's plan Z. |

The thing that we are forgetting is that it takes more than the fan buying the ticket to keep a team. As Edmonton and Calgary learned through the 80's by almost losing thier teams, it's the corporate community and the big dollars they put in that keep a team around. Think of Pittsburhg today. Wen would not be having this conversation if that Casino group got what they wanted. There would be a huge new arena being built in Pittsburgh, and this conversations would not be going on.
It's all about the big corporate dollar, and I don't think Winnipeg has got that.
I say send Pittsburgh packing and one other team. Have a dispersal draft and that way, the NHL could have 4 divisions of 7 teams.

The sprint center is awsome but that is true would they bring in enough fans?....I would like to see more canadian teams develope especially with the cap considering its helping the canadian teams to afford such a payroll then it use to be! and be competitive!!!.....I CAN'T BELEIVE ANAHIEM HAS ONLY 5 SELLOUTS IN 20 HOMEGAMES THUS FAR OUCH!!!!!! For being the #1 team in the league You would expect better outcome !!!!! I JUST DON'T KNOW WHY THEY DON'T LOOK OUT FOR MORE CANADIAN TEAMS!!!! But for people dissi'n kansas there are some more stranger places then kansas for hockey like nashville, columbus and carolina never would of thought of those destinations.

Bang on about the corporate dollars.
First I thought this meeting with KC was just a bargaining tactic used by Lemieux so he could return to Pittsburgh with a 'back-up deal'. I truly beleive Lemieux wants nothing more than for the Pens to stay in Pittsburgh. But now with this rent free deal, I think next year will see the return of the SCOUTS!

Tha Scouts then moved to Colorado (The Rockies) after the 1976 season. They moved again in 1982 to New Jersey and became the Devils. So indirectly, the Scouts can be considered Stanley Cup Champions ... |

It would be nice for David Asper to put some money into getting a hockey team, instead of spending $65 million to get a new stadium built for the Bombers. That $65 million is only his share, he needs the province and the feds to kick in another $40 million or so each to make the deal work. Then the Bombers would be owned by him. I wish they would pour that funding into buying the Pens and forget about a new stadium for the Bombers who only play in the place 9 times a year. Seems like sort of a waste to me when the brand new MTS center is sitting downtown and not even gettin filled up for the AHL moose games. It only has a capacity of around 14000 or so but then the seats would be easier to fill if Pegger's were awarded an NHL franchise again. As for the corporate dollars, they are there through the Asper family through Global Communications or whatever they're called. They just bought out Alliance Atlantis and I just don't see why they are streaming money into a go-nowhere CFL franchise!!!

I registered just for this topic You Clowns are so out to lunch it isn't even funny. First off all you guys in Calgary and Edmonton who say " you learnd your lesson" just remember that the NHL did EVERYTHING they could for you guys so that relocation would not happen. Winnipeg was not granted any tax breaks or anything because of our weak Canadioan dollar. Do you think you guys would be any more likely to get a team in your cites now if you didn't already have one? I'll answer for you...NO. I make an average salery and 3000 dollars for season tickets is not a problem fo me, nor will it be for at least 12000 other winnipegers. You think that out of 800,000 people (includes imediate vacinity) that 12000 people can't spend that amount??? pull your heads out you ass... Also where was the NHL for us in 1996 when the team left?? They are sure there for Pittsburgh sticking there nose into everything saying that they can not leave....... |

Mr. Winnepeg, read my post from above. It's all about the corporate dollar, not the fan base.
For all of us people from Calgary or Edmonton, if there was no franchise here, I think there would be a much larger chance than in Winnipeg. Reason being, corporate money.
Finally, doing your math 12,000 season tickets at $3000/season ticket is $36 million. That's not even enough to pay your players salary?? You need at least that much more to run a team for the year, maybe more. Again, corporate dollars. That is the reason why you won't see another Winnipeg franchise. I would love to see one there, but it won't happen. |

Welcome Winnipeg!
Dont get me wrong - I would love to see a team in the Peg. Seeing the support that the Moose get, Winnipeg IS a Hockey Town - there is no denying that. And I have no doubt that you could sell more tickets than half the franchises in the NHL, but the issue is corporate dollars. Gary Bettman doesn't care about Canadian Franchises. (Wow I kinda sounded like Kanye West there...George Bush doesn't care about...lol) He would rather go to KC than Winnipeg. Is that better for the game - NO. But he is an idiot and is hung up on trying to sell a game to the Americans.
Face it Bettman, most Americans don't like hockey! And that is just fine by me. I am not debating that. If they like Football over hockey, well then god bless them. Bettman will never change their minds. He will try and fail and will make a big mess along the way. Real fans will get snubbed.

I like hockey. Waaayyy more than football. But the reason why the majority of my countrymen like football better is because hockey is a game where it is most popular in cold climates, and the US doesn't have the same year-round cold climate that Canada does. I agree with you on the Winnipeg thing--the Pens shouldn't go to KC because more people will watch them in Winnipeg. We've already got 24 NHL teams and if that's doesn't make hockey the favorite game over football, then putting another team in Kansas, which isn't the ideal hockey town due to tornadoes and hot weather, isn't going to make a whole lot of difference. But what's dumb is, Pittsburghers loved the Pens and they were dedicated fans, so why take the team away from them and put it in Kansas where even fewer people are gonna watch it? |

I agree, the people from Kansas will be so proud that they got a hockey team, they'll go to maybe 10 games at the most then get bored.

Like Beans said, its corporate dollar. Don't complain and say we have the fans, because I think you guys there do. I live in Toronto, and there are plenty of people ( Larger Population= More Attendants) and alot of big corporatins to support my beloved Leafs.
I think a good location could be Quebec. Remember those classic bouts between them and the Canadians. Hockey could probably survive there, and they would no doubt be willing to embrace Crosby and Malkin with open arms.

I would have like to see the president of RIM (Research in Motion) purchase the team and move them to Kitchener/Waterloo. The Leaf need another team to bring their prices down. He has the money and there certainly are the fans available. |

Just read in yesterdays "Winnipeg Sun" about Bettmans comments that aired on HNIC during the All-star game that under the new financial framework Winnipeg could most likely support an NHL team. Whether this is just Bettman blowing smoke up everyone's ass or he is actually serious about it, only time will tell. At least he acknowledges that there MIGHT be a possibility. Mark Chipman, President of True North Entertainment (who owns the MTS center and the Manitoba Moose), and Winnipeg mayor Sam Katz are pleased about Bettmans comments. Also, media mogul David Asper, whom I mentioned earlier on in this topic, was at the All-Star game along with Chipman. Possibly there is something in the works, but who knows. There have been rumors that Nashville's owner (can't remember his name, Leopold I think) wants to sell 40% of his share and possibly relocate b/c the Preds have no fan base. Also the Florida Panthers have been mentioned in relocation as well. ALSO there were rumblings of 2 more expansion teams to make 16 in each conference, but the issue about an expansion team in the Peg is touch and go b/c the fans probably wouldn't support a team while it builds foundations with players. They want a ready-to-go team that can provide some entertainment and be close in the wins-losses column. Just thought I would share some of this info, and you never know what will happen in time! GO JETS GO!

I hate to break it to you guys, but the Kansas City that the Pens are talking about moving to is actually in MISSOURI. So, maybe you'll stop refering to Kansas in your posts. I find it strange that you feel hockey won't work in Kansas City, Missouri when it seems to work fine in St. Louis, Missouri. Also, the smart guy that said it's too hot in KC and there are too many tornados? Yeah, I'm sure the people in Kansas City would like to hear that seeing as how it's about 10 degrees there today.
As for the Scouts, their failure was due more to their poor management and ownership. You can't blame the city for the fact that they only won a handful of games in two seasons. The Scouts moved to Denver and became the Rockies. After only a few seasons there, they moved to New Jersey. Are you telling me that Denver isn't a hockey town. 500 plus straight sellouts at the Pepsi Center says otherwise.
You people should know what you're talking about before you open your mouths. KC had a team in the IHL for ten years before that league folded. If the guy that owned the Kansas City Blades didn't also own the Grand Rapid Griffins, the Blades would have been brought into the AHL. He was only allowed to bring in one team, so he chose Grand Rapids because that was his home town. The Blades always did very well in attendance and had a big following in KC.
The Kansas City area has many hockey teams. To the west in Witchita, Kansas, you have the Thunder of the CHL. To the North you have the Omaha Knights of the AHL and the Lincoln Lancers of the USHL. To the east you have the St. Louis Blues of the NHL. To the south in Oklahoma City you have the Blazers and in Tulsa you have the Oilers. This foolish idea that people in the central US have no knowledge of hockey is a joke. Look at a map.

Pittsburgh needs a new arena, but they still sell tickets.
Now St. Louis is the opposite, they are in trouble, they struggle to get 10,000 at a game. I live in London and the Knights (OHL) have been sold out the past 4 seasons, 9,000+ at every game, St. Louis should be embarrassed...
