Over the last few years many teams with a very good top six have failed to go deep into the playoffs or even qualify for the playoffs. It is obvious to any hockey fan that a energy line that can keep the puck in the offensive zone and wear down opposing defense, or get the puck out of their own zone, the kind of line that when their team gets ahead in the game their ice time goes up because they can be counted on to hold the lead, and occaisionally chip in the odd goal. So who would be your three, the only rule is they cannot play regular shifts on the top two lines. (they have to be an actual third liner or 4th) So who would be your three?

I remember when Anaheim won the cup I really liked the line of Pahlson, R. Niedermayer and Moen...

Are those guys considered third line??? I think they have a few shifts here and there on second line depending but Drew Stafford, Dustin Byfuglien and Milan Lucic would be a killer line of size and powerforward. if not...

I also like Glen Metropolit, Dominic Moore, Andrew Ladd, Darren Helm, Steve Ott, Jordin Tootoo, Chris Neil, Nick Foligno, Ian Laperrière, Jordan Staal, Fredrik Sjostrom.

So out of this list I would go with Jordan Staal, Darren Helm and Andrew Ladd. They all won a cup and they were big contributers on the third line of their respective teams.

I know I know Jordan Staal shouldn't be a third liner, but right now he is and IMO he's the best third line center in the league.

I don't know if your looking for toughness, defence or energy, but the third line for the Bruins two years ago was very good offencively. The line for most of the year was Lucic, Wheeler and centered by Krejci. Who knows, it might be their third line this year.

Well, right off the bat, without having to think about it for a second, I'd have Jordan Staal as my third line center. We all know the only reason he is on the third line is because of the other two great centers Pittsburgh has. Easily a second line center at worst, he brings size, skill, scoring, and is an effective penalty killer. Solid, solid player.

Wingers require more thought probably . . . but off the top of my head, I really liked how Giroux played this last playoffs, he is a real hard worker and is not afraid to go into the corners, and he certainly has the skill to boot. When Gagne was still with Philly, he was still on the third line, although in all probability he will be moving up in the future. But for now, I'll put him on RW.

Now I need a LWer . . . and I have my two guys with speed, skill and smarts, so I want a bit of a bruiser who goes to the net to complement them, someone who doesn't look out of place playing with these two pretty skilled guys. Chris Neil comes to mind.

C. Neil - J. Staal - Giroux

even though staal is a 3rd liner he's to good to be listed there, I'd say lucic giroux and bolland

I'd go with Leino-Staal-Grier. If I can't use Staal substitue Handzus.

Yeah, I really like Pahlsson, he is a great defensive specialist . . . but on my best third line, besides the fact that he is a center like Staal, he just doesnt bring enough grit, and doesn't have much in terms of scoring prowess at all. Maybe a few years ago, but not now.

And Moen? Seriously? Not very fast, has some size, a perennial minus player who had his career seasons with Anaheim by planting himself in front of the net. Not particularly skilled at all.

Not sure why he would be mentioned at all among the better third-liners in the game . . . oh, right, he plays for the Canadiens.

If moen didn't play for the habs he would have a lot better numbers,,, Moen is very quick i don't get where you saying he is not very fast,, he did score 7 or 9 goals last year im not sure which, on the pk hes very reliable,, deffinetly not on my best thrid line and you' re right there are a lot of younger better players i would take before him but personally i think you (slozo) have seriously underated him
