1- The Leafs will Not make the playoffs. 2- The Oilers will finish 25th or higher 3- Phil Kessel will have less than 38 goals 4- Taylor Hall will have more than 34 goals 5- No Leaf player will have more than 65 pts
The bet is if 3 or more of my predictions come true, you must proudly display an Oilers avatar from the end of the 11/12 regular season until the start of the 12/13 season. If less than 3 of my predictions come true than I put up the Leafs avatar for the same duration.
Bet?
STATUS CHECK:
1) Leafs currently in playoffs, quite solidly in fact (slozo ) 2) Oilers currently 25th or higher . . . but it's getting close (Beans ) 3) Kessel on pace for . . . 55 goals (slozo ) 4) Taylor Hall on pace for 26 goals, now injured (slozo ) 5) *2 Leafs on pace for 66 pts or more - Lupul 99, Kessel 106 (slozo )
Slozo has a big lead right now . . . but it's a long season, so no one is counting chickens yet. But it looks great so far!
* Note: this number is technically 3, as Connolly (12 pts in 12 games) if projected over the remaining 58 games was to continue his pace and NOT get re-injured, would finish with 70 points.
"Take off, eh?" - Bob and Doug
I will conceed that I am behind in this bet, but to say 'big 'lead' is a bit of a stretch to me. let me explain:
1 - The Leafs are NOT 'solidly' in the playoffs. There is 2 wins separating 1st from 9th in the East. One bad week end from the Leafs and one good week end from NJ and they are no longer 'solidly' in the playoffs.
2 - The Oilers are in pretty close to the same spot in the fight for 25th as the Leafs are for the playoffs. The Oilers are currently 5 pts clear of 25th. I'm not too comfortable with that one!
3 - Kessel is on pace for 55 goals, when you look at it a cross the 22 games he has played. He has played pretty consistently to this point. I am concerned with this bet.
4 - Even before the injury I was not pleased with Hall's performance and with him out 2-4 weeks at least, this is the bet I am most concerned about.
5 - There are a couple of players on pace for more than 65 pts, but the season is still long. I am not too concerned.
Ultimately, it does not look promising today. I don't agree it is a big lead as a bad week end for the Leafs and one injury and I would have the lead again. I would not be much of a gambler if I did not take a risk now and then. This bet was clearly a risk at the start of the season. I accept that. |

Beans - I know it doesn't seem like much of a difference in terms of points in/out of the playoffs; but the american thanksgiving marker says that the Leafs have well over a 80% chance to finish in the playoffs at this point. That's just statistics for teams that make the playoffs that are in the playoffs at Thanksgiving.
For being just above 25th, I think it's less exact, myself, and I give you a very good chance at winning that point right now. Unless Khabi gets old again real fast, you guys should finish 26th or better in the league, I think.
I do love this bet though, no matter who wins - love the complexity of it, and all the different factors involved. Let's make sure we continue on in this vein in the future at least, with the loser each time making up the terms.
I'm just talking about it now so you have a chance to dream up even more interesting terms for next year!

I do appreciate the 80% American Thanksgiving rule, however I also know historically that neither East or West has been as tight as it has been the past few years. Those pesky OTL points wreak havoc on the traditional world of hockey. 5 points is a pretty tight gap regardless of it being for a playoff spot or for 25th.
And I also like the structure of this bet. It's a little more complex which makes losing one part of the bet more tolerable. We will definitely structure similar bets in the future.
I am already formulating my playoff double or nothing bet in the off chance I actually lose this bet. |

Bet update:
Slozo is kicking me straight in the junk:
1- The Leafs will Not make the playoffs.
One of the few I am holding out hope on. Time will tell.
2- The Oilers will finish 25th or higher
The Oilers need to stay hot for the next 30 games. They are currently 5 pts below the 25th place team. A little hope for this one still.
3- Phil Kessel will have less than 38 goals
Unless Kessel gets a season ending injury(For the record, I am NOT hoping for this to happen) this should be a win for Slozo by mid March.
4- Taylor Hall will have more than 34 goals
Effin injuries!! Hall is on pace to get 29 goals in 72 games. Fold that out to 82 games and it's 35 goals and I would win this portion. This is a long shot to happen.
5- No Leaf player will have more than 65 pts
See response to bet #3 but include Lupul's name.
It was a stretch bet from the start of the year but really looks like a stinker today. Gotta start working on my double or nothing move for the playoffs.

Hey, let's remember, when you first proposed this wager, not only did both you and I think it was fair - most of the regulars also thought it was evenly weighted. It's just that everything has gone my way so far.
The real killer has been the injuries to the Oil, including Hall . . . it killed (to this point, anyway) their chance at finishing above 25th, and greatly affected Hall's chance at 35 goals. And Kessel alone has sorta killed all possibility of you winning this bet, IMHO . . . he has surpassed even my loftier expectations this year, easily. I thought he'd be good for 70-75 points, but as you know is on pace for well above that at this point (and heating up again). That takes care of two parts of the bet, and has gone a long way thus far for the Leafs making it as well.
But honestly, if I get 4 out of 5 and win, it'll still be bittersweet unless the you-know-whose make the you-know-whats

I agree, i think it was fair. I actually sided with Beans. Here's what i said:
quote: Originally posted by Alex116 Beans....love this offer / wager. It should be a fun one to track as the season progresses. Kudo's to you for coming up with something more than the normal bets we see! My takes, even if they don't matter .............
1. Leafs miss, barely 2. Oilers finish 25th or better 3. Kessel squeezes out 39 or 40 4. Hall gets hot in the second half and pots 35+ 5. Kessel and maybe Kulemin both top 65
1. Leafs are in, but not a guarantee. 2. Oilers started nicely, and are absolutely dismal now yet somehow recently got wins vs Chi and Det??? Then again, everyone seems to be beating Chi these days? 3. Kessel needs about 8 or 9 more in his last 20 games? Seems all but a sure thing. 4. Hall unfortunately not just missed 10 games, but has missed time with RNH due to his (RNH) injuries. On a 33 goal pace (over 82) so without injuries, i'd have still liked this bet, however, highly unlikely now. 5. Got the wrong 2, but still picked 2 regardless so i actually am winning this part.
By the looks of it, at best i'd get 2 right, but maybe only 1?
However, in other news, Pasty, you need Nash to score 55 more points in his last 28 games to avoid a nice CANUCKS siggy line through the playoffs!!! |

Bet between Beans and myself . ..
STATUS CHECK (winner must get at last 3 of 5 points):
1) Leafs currently out of playoffs (Beans) 2) Oilers currently lower than 25th in the league - currently 29th, 4 pts back of 28th . . . (slozo) 3) Kessel has 32 goals, 6 shy of 38 required but still on pace to make it - barely (slozo) 4) Taylor Hall has 23 goals, extremely unlikely to make it to 35(slozo ) 5) The Leafs' Kessel has 68 points, Lupul 66 - two Leafs have already made this point a win for slozo
1 out of 5 already confirmed to have been won by myself.
Funny enough Beans (not ha ha funny for you, obviously) it's your Oiler bets that at this point seem the most likely to certainly go my way - at this point in the standings, it looks extremely unlikely the Oilers jump three spots up in the standings league-wise to satisfy that part of the bet for you. And even less likely Hall can get to 35 goals, barring some kind of Stamkos-like explosion.
Leafs making the playoffs looks like it's now very much in doubt, and probably quite unlikely at this point. It's probably even money on whether Kessel can now get to 38, as he has cooled off, and is not scoring very often these days.
I'm still confident

Bet is on! Signature chosen by the winner and to be in place through the 2012 playoffs. 25th or better you win, dead last I win, 29 to 26 is a wash. Odds are in your favor but I like this bet.
Looks like I picked a winner this year. Cant see dead last or below 25. |

Joshua.....can you clarify this bet? It says "25 or better you (Beans?) win, dead last i (Joshua?) win, 29 to 26 is a wash.
Were you betting the Sens to finish last??? I'm confused.....

Was a bet that I said Ottawa will be better than 25th in the league and Beans figured them for dead last. Anything position inbetween was a wash. Bet was for signature during Playoffs. If I win Beans has a statement for Alfredson as his personal MVP. Either way I look forward to a Ottawa post season should the wheels not fall off. |

Ok, so i'm assuming that post i quoted was worded wrong? Or am i still confused?
It said "25th or better you win" and i thought the "you" meant Beans? I did figure you were the one betting on the Sens to be 25 or better and i'm happy i wasn't offered action on that wager as i'd be writing an essay or changing an avatar to a Sens one soon. |

1st statement was by me to Beans: confirmation of bet.
2nd statement was copy of Beans wager to me.
I thought I woulda had a few other wagers for same this year. Beans was only better with the guts this year. Of course the stars aligned for me as even I hadnt expected them to be in playoff position with 9 games remaining. |

OK, i think i understand the whole bet now! The wording you quoted was a little confusing.
I too didn't expect much ANYTHING from the Sens this year! Scary part is, they were looking as though they might end up winning the div with the Bruins slumping, but they seem to have fallen into a little slump of their own. After a very unexpectedly successful season, they're in serious danger of missing the playoffs all of a sudden. I'm no Sens fan, but i'm rooting for them to make it in!!! |

Me too... The Canucks will be lonely otherwise
Beans - it looks like a strong possibility that you will win our Giroux bet (and he didn't even play all the games!), however I'm out of country until mid-april. I don't want you thinking I bolted the site after a loss , i'll settle up when I get back. Unless he should magically go cold in the last few games... |

Beans......did Nuxfan put some sort of hex on Giroux? He got shutout today and only has 2 points in his last 6 games. That greedy "i'm taking 90 or less" that Nuxfan threw at ya is looking to come into play! Giroux has just 4 games left and is sitting at 86 points!!!
In other news, Rick Nash needs 37points in his last 4 games or i win my bet with Pasty. |

What are your terms? I like Vancouver, Chicago, St. Louis, Detroit, and Nashville. I am not sold on NYR. I think Pitt, Philly, or Boston will come out of th East. I like the teams in the west over those guys except maybe Pitt.
I like the West this year. If your terms are reasonable, I will take your bet.

Okay it's straight up I win the bet if a team from the East wins the cup, You win if a team from the West rises to victory. However since I pretty much named my bet here i think it's only fair to let you make the stakes, perhaps an avatar change for the off-season.

Beans/slozo bet . . . STATUS CHECK (winner must get at last 3 of 5 points):
1) Leafs miss/make playoffs - Leafs will miss playoffs (Beans)
2) Oilers finish 25th or worse - currently ranked 29th in the league, and unless they win all remaining games and every team ahead of them loses all games, I am guessing they'd still lose the ti-breaker, so I think this is confirmed . . . (slozo)
3) Kessel scores 38+ goals - currently has 37 goals, 1 shy, needs a goal in last three games (slozo)
4) Taylor Hall gets 35+ goals - out for rest of the season at 27 goals (slozo )
5) A Leaf player gets 66+ points - Kessel, Lupul (slozo)
With the only part of the bet that is truly in doubt being Kessel's goal total, it looks as if I have already won this bet getting 3 out of the confirmed 4 parts.
Looking forward to another playoffs with Beans proudly wearing the blue and white!

I pay my debts, you know that.
This bet was frustration as I believe a healthy Hall and a few less injuries to other key Oilers and it would haven been mine!!
Oh well. It was a fun bet and something I will propose again. I liked the multiple facits to the bet. It made it more interesting.
So yes, my avatar will be Leafy from the start of thoe playoffs until the start of the start of next season. Coincidentally, that's the same length of time of the golf season for the Leafs. Again. |

3 pts today puts him at 89, not 90, but surely a very satisfying day for you Beans! This bet, unlike my gift from Pasty, is as good as it gets. Looks like it's coming down to the last game or 2!
As for your avatar losing 5 part bet, very unfortunate that Hall was as injured as he was this season (and i guess RNH as well). Hall's goals per game rate this season had him on pace for 36! Would have made the last few interesting with Kessel sitting at 37 having slowed somewhat without Lupul in the lineup. Either way, i loved the 5 part bet. I'll have to come up with one of those next season! |

Well, the optimist in me says I was batted .500 this season.
A recap:
The Slozo bet:
1- The Leafs will Not make the playoffs - Win(and the only bet that matters) 2- The Oilers will finish 25th or higher - Lose (stupid injuries) 3- Phil Kessel will have less than 38 goals - Win 4- Taylor Hall will have more than 34 goals - Lose (stupid injuries) 5- No Leaf player will have more than 65 pts - Lose
Well done Slozo, as you can see the avatar is posted and will be until the start of next season. This one was my bet, it is only fair you call the one for next season. Agreed?
Joshua, you should also see the signature posted which is payment for our bet. The Sens outplayed everyone's expectations season. I gladly pay this bet as I now have a Canadian team to cheer for in the playoffs.
Nux owes me something for Giroux getting more than 90 pts. I know he is out of town and he will pay upon his return.
Leafs81 already paid for Kessel not getting 40 or more goals. That one was sweet.
So, I win two and lose two. Although, the one to Slozo stings a bit more each year.
Anyone have bets for the playoffs?
Daniel Alfredsson is the MVP of the universe. All hail the Ottawa Senators!!!!! |

In the end Beans, our bet became closer and closer, but Hall's injuries and the Oilkers injuries as a whole (and their shoddy defence at times) killed it for you. You know I had predicted that Hall would have injuries in his career though, so I certainly don't treat it as bad luck or anything . . . I think he plays to carelessly for his size, and he may have a much shortened career as a result.
I'll definitely cook up the next bet for upcoming regular season for sure, thanks for letting me have the honours next round. Will be difficult to equal yours, which was nicely done, but I'll give it a shot.
If everyone is OK with it, I am going to run a playoff pick'em contest this year (unless you really want to do it this year Beans, in which case it's all yours - but expect complaining!).

As I will be heading out of town before the start of the playoffs I too must pay my bet to Sensfan.
Those darn Senators - they have no business being in the top 10 let alone the playoffs. I digress though, they surprised all and deserve to be where they are because of their hard work. And no matter what, Neil is a coward.

"Take off, eh?" - Bob and Doug
I agree about Hall playing reckless. Although this latest injury didn't have much to with his style of play, but he does play a little too much on the edge at times.
Go ahead with the playoff pick'em game. I said was not doing it again after the complaining last season so it is all yours. Now it's my turn to complain!!!!
Daniel Alfredsson is the MVP of the universe. All hail the Ottawa Senators!!!!! |

Preds will be out in four. Well, maybe a bit harsh, but conference finals? What's the terms?
The Oil WILL make the playoffs in 2013. |

Those darn Senators - they have no business being in the top 10 let alone the playoffs. I digress though, they surprised all and deserve to be where they are because of their hard work. And no matter what, Neil is a coward.
Good job Sensfan.
I LOVE THE OTTAWA SENATORS
As much as I would love to gloat I didn't even really expect to win the bet P.S. Neil for Prime Minister

I was just about to give you Duncan Keith. Then I remembered how gentle you were last year with the Tanner Glass gift you gave me.
The subject of your essay is:
Ryan Jones

I would have balked at Keith, but only because the player has to be from the Oilers as per the bet.
I had a funny feeling it would be Jones. Prepare to be mesmerized. |

Speaking of which, i never got back to you to finalize our bet. I think a signature line for the playoffs would be good enough. The winner can decide what it says?
Slozo, your bet is looking pretty good. Especially the part where "no Leaf over 65 pts" is concerned!!!
PaaaaaySteeeeeee.....Where are you? I'm begining to wonder about Hab fans. Last year Mr. Boogedy welched on my bet win and now Pasty has vanished? Pasty, i respect you too much to really be pissed, IIRC, you're away or working or something? I don't really believe your signature with something positive for the Canucks would have the series any different than it currently is. |
