I would be astonished if the red wings suffer any major decline . Do not get me wrong they are missing some star studed talent but the red wings have so much depth and play such a controlled game that they can deal with injuries better then any other team. No other team in the league has more defensive reliable forwards then detroit and with the injury to Stuart i hope my buddies younger brother Brandon Smith will get some solid playing time. This kid is special and detroit fans although no one can replace Lidstrom Smith will lesson the burden once he leaves (had to get a little plug in their for him). I have said in the past that any goalie in the league can play for Detroit and be made to look good so we will see in the coming weeks if this is indeed true or if Howard is a key part of Detroit's success. Macdonald has proven in the past with the leafs and islanders that he can be a decent bandage until howard or osgoode return. Even with all of their injuries Detroit still bosts a lineup with three number one d (Kronwall, Rafalski & Lidstrom) and the likes of Zetterberg, Franzen, Bertuzzi, Draper and many more speedy reliable forwards. Many teams would flounder with so much talent on the shelf but i would be surprised to see detroit go on any sort of losing streak. Hell knowing Detroit their is probably a 7th round 200th overall draft pick waiting in the minors to take the league by storm (Note the sarcasm with the last comment)

I have to agree - there are few teams I can think of that could weather an injury plague like they have now, but DET is one of them. They're deep enough to be better than average while still missing 2 top-line forwards, a couple of checking forwards, and their #1 goalie.
Any word on how long Howard will be out? |

Datsyuk should be returning shortly, he injured himself Dec. 23 and was supposed to be 4-6 weeks. Usually with the treatment they get it is 4 weeks |

I've corrected the major spelling/capitalisation errors.
Well, old guys getting hurt and a sophomore season from a starting goalie were the primary reasons I gave for my pre-season prediction of the Wings fighting for a playoff spot. I've been dead wrong so far, but the long and gruelling NHL season could start a slow decline . . . we'll see. They've built up quite a lead in the division, so that have lots of play at the moment over the Hawks and Preds.
The biggest surprise for me has been Lidstrom . . . he is playing like he's 25, and having another Norris candidate season. It's an amazingly stabilising influence to have that.
