You guys seen the allstars who've been selected and the controversies that have followed (as there always is)???

Have to assume that a guy like Zetterberg asked not to be selected for some reason??? No way could guys like Kessel, Hemsky, Elias and even Malkin for that matter be picked over Z?

Also, is it just me, or wouldn't you pick Grabovski over Kessel at this point in the season? Maybe even Kulemin?

I suppose the Elias pick is one of those "we have to take someone from every team"?

As for Z, if it is in fact him opting out, i think they should tell the fans. Same goes for Hemsky in Edmonton. Was he their first pick? Personally, and maybe he didn't quite cut it on D, i'd award the selection to Whitney and then announce that because he's hurt, they've replaced him with Hemsky. Whitney was having a terrific season and it's a shame to see him hurt.

Definitly think Whitney would've been the Oiler to represent if he'd been healthy. I can't comment on the Leafs... I only watch them when they play Edmonton.

I know people are choked that Zetterberg wasn't named, but last I heard he's treating a bad back between games, so he could probably use the extra time off.

What surprised me the most is that there was only 1 western goalie named. I thought Howard or Quick would get nominated.

The arena wall in chicago should be credited with a goal.

Marc Staal in there, hey? thats kind of nice to see, I've always liked the Staals. I don't ever see any Rangers games or anything, but can anyone comment on how hes been doing; is his spot on the team deserved?

As a guy who watches the Rangers play every night, yes i think Marc Staal is definitely a deserving selection. While he may not bring the offense that some of the others announced today do (though he is putting up respectable numbers this year), he's one of the best shutdown defensemen in the game today, he's just a superb all around defender. He's the best defensemen on one of the best defensive teams in the NHL.

As a Rangers fan i would of liked to seen Brandon Dubinsky recognized, but i realize there isn't room for everyone and you have to try get all 30 teams represented. Dubi is having a fantastic season though and i'm sure he recieved consideration.

Zetterberg is an obvious omission, unless as already stated he opted out of the game for personal reasons. I haven't really spent much time looking over roster at the guys who made it/didn't make it...but it's kind of surprising top teams Philly (Girioux) and Detroit (Lidstrom) only had 1 player selected. Rafalksi is having another great year but he missed a little bit of time to injury. Datsyuk would likely be there as well if not for injury.

There were four teams with no representatives in the main All-Star game, specifically Phoenix, Buffalo, Florida & the Islanders. They each have a rookie rep. in the Skills competition though. However, I think each of those teams should have a player on the main team. I'm sure the NHL tried its best, but I wonder why somebody like Keith Yandle, Shane Doan, John Tavares, Tomas Vokoun, Stephen Weiss, Bryan McCabe, Tyler Myers or Ryan Miller weren't picked for those teams. If they were able to pick players like Ales Hemsky, Phil Kessel, Patrick Elias or Erik Karlsson as their lone respective team reps, then do it for all 30 teams. They didn't have to pick extra team reps such as Chara, M.Staal, M.Green, J.Hiller or P.Kane either. I don't want to discredit any of the players selected as each one in his own way deserves it, but it seems unfair to me that each of the 30 teams is not represented.

I personally couldn't care less if every team had a rep. If you're not playing at an all star level, you shouldn't be there period!

On a side note, i read today that Malkin was one of the 6 voted in by fans so that explains his pick over some others who may be more deserving?

I think, "who cares" applies here. The All Star game is nothing but a floater competition. Why invite defensemen at all? There isn't any, or very little, defense in this game anyway. No body contact, no intensity, no aggressive play....... Just a giant money grab with a pond hockey game in return. I'd rather skip it and roll with the regular season. That being said, Kessel is there only because a) Toronto had to have a rep b) Burke prolly made sure it was Kessel to have him play with some quality centremen to say "see, the trade will be good once I get this guy a centre". Grabo should be there long before Phil, but, the parody in the NHL has once again let politics rule.

Well . . . the "who cares" argument doesn't wash with me, first off. You have an all-star game, yes it's a meaningless game, but no, that doesn't mean you can't do it right, and pick the true all-stars of the game.

An all-star isn't just a guy who is doing really well statistically . .. it's also a guy who is the face of the team, and someone who is recognised as very skilled.

So, the reason Kessel was chosen over Grabo isn't that peculiar, really . . . I would have expected it. Same with Malkin getting voted in.

In my humble opinion however, if I was choosing a REAL all-star team, there would be no Leafs currently (Grabo wouldn't quite make it). And certainly no Devils, and no Oilers (only because of Whitney's injury, however).

And Fleury wouldn't be there for me, I'd have chosen Howard over him. But it's tough to choose goalies, as their stats are so affected by the defence in front of them.

I have grown to loathe the all-star game. I'm glad more Canucks were not chosen, given the travel from VAN to CAR. Better to take those days and rest up for the rest of the real season.

I was thinking the exact same thing, I would love to see these two go head to head, may add a little spice to the game.

Was going to mention ( regarding one rep. per team...Kessel for TO )...

Why be critical of kessel anyway, he does have 19 goals which puts him 10 th overall in the NHL.......H.Sedin, who i know is a great player...but only has 9 goals.

Yes, only 9 goals.... to go along with his 46 assists, which currently leads the league by a fairly wide margin and puts him 4th in overall league scoring.

Really, are you comparing Hank Sedin and Kessel?

I too hope the Sedin's are on different teams. Hank proved last year in Daniel's 18 game absence that he could still play at a high level so i don't worry about that, i just think it'd be neat to see if they could find instant chemistry with others?

No way do i see them being as good separated, but just how much of a drop off would it be? Don't see them being the captains, but i guess you never know? Be nice to see the captains who are chosen either pick them back to back or make a deal ahead of time that they will be picked by one each!

Nuxfan, no i am not comparing Kessel to H. Sedin, i just threw him in there because he is one of the league greats, at the all - star game and has 45 % of kessels goal total.

Kessel is young at 23.....H.Sedin is 30 years old with more NHL experience and on a great team.

Since we are on this topic, lets compare their Numbers at the same age coming into the league.

At the age of 20 years old
..............................GP.......Goals........Points
Kessel....................70..........19.............29
H.Sedin..................82..........9...............29
at the age of 21 years old
Kessel....................70...........36.............60
H.Sedin...................82...........16............36
at the age of 22 years old
Kessel....................70............30............55
H.Sedin..................78.............8.............39
( for this year i will have to project Kessels 2nd half finish)
Kessel...................82.............36............60 ( at age 23 )
H.Sedin.................76.............11............42 ( at age 23 )

Not saying anything about comparing these players right now but for the first 4 years of either player in the league...as you can see Kessels numbers Blew H.Sedins numbers out of the water !!!

Lets look at the totals for each player for their first 4 years as an NHL regular.

.....................Total GP.........Goals.......Points
Kessel..............292...............121..........204
H.Sedin............318................44...........146

1st four seasons
...................total.....PointsPG..%........GoalsPG..%
Kessel........................( .70 )%..............( .41 ) %
H.Sedin......................( .46 )%..............( .14 ) %

Now who can argue with that ??

If H.Sedin blossomed into what he is today from these medicore numbers, Maybe Kessel nay-sayers should give him a break.

DIdn't you just claim you weren't comparing the two??? HUH?

BTW, you can't compare, at least not fairly, two guys in TOTALLY different situations!!! It's ridiculous!

Either way, your comparison pretty much says the Kessel WILL be better than Sedin at age 30! I'll just wait and see...

Perhaps look at it the other way - Kessel is at the game, but only has 50% of Sedin's point total.

quote:

Who cares what they did in the first 4 years of their careers? The all-star game doesn't make selections based on how players played in the first 4 years of their respective careers - they make selections based on how they're playing this year and/or last year. Right now, Hank is one of the top 3 centres in the entire NHL. Kessel is a speedy one-dimensional 30 goal scorer.

Brad Boyes scored more points than Hank in his first 4 seasons - is he going to be better than Hank? Scott Gomez scored WAY more points than Hank in his first 4 years - is he a better player than Hank? Chris Drury, Olli Jokinen, etc etc. The NHL has plenty of players that did well in their first 4 years, but never consistently progressed beyond that point, and certainly didn't get to the level that Hank has gotten to.

How do you know that Kessel has not hit his top level now - perhaps he'll never be better than a ~30g/65pt player...

Sedin is a great player.......
Leaf players....no matter how good they do....receive nothing from most people other than a kick in the nuts

All i ever hear for leaf haters is how bad they are, they will never be good, they can`t get good, things have to change sometime,

Here's the thing Duke, yeah, i don't like the Leafs at the best of times. BUT, if they were good, i'm not the type of person to come on here and say they're not.

Now, maybe your comments weren't directed at me as much as others, but I was simply pointing out your comparison of Kessel to Sedin was ridiculous (the early career stats). I didn't even say what i truly feel in this thread and that is that the Leafs, IMO, don't have ANYONE deserving of being in the All Star game. I did say, i'd take Grabo, and maybe even Kulemin, over Kessel at this point if in fact they were trying to get reps from all the teams.

As far as Leafs players getting "kicked in the nuts" from others and how the Leafs are "bad, will never be good....etc", that's not really true all the time, at least not from me. If i say something bad regarding their team, that's my honest opinion, and right now, i don't feel they're a very good team. I'm not saying they NEVER will be, but in the next few years, i just don't see it. Yeah, i could be wrong, but their immediate future does not look great.

Trust me, as much as i dislike the Leafs as a team, they've had players over the years who i loved to watch and appreciate. Gilmour, Clark, Damphousse, Sundin even Kaberle and not to forget Alexander Godynyuk. Ok, i'm kidding about the last one but hopefully you see what i'm trying to say. I'm not here to pile on the Leafs, unless of course dellusional Leaf fans start spouting off silly nonsense, or of course, if "my" Canucks start getting unfairly slagged!!!

Perhaps it only seems that way because leaf fans are constantly comparing their own to players well outside their skill levels... if you think "Kessel is not as good as Hank" is the equivalent of a kick in the nuts, well so be it. There are a lot of very good players in the league that are not as good as hank.

You need to accept that while Kessel is a pretty good player, he has so far proved to be nothing more than a one-dimensional player capable of 30g and 65-ish points a season. Only in leaf-land is that all-star material.

I will admit i normally bash the leafs but that is primarily because they are not very good and i live in leaf land and listen to many leaf fans making arguements that are out of this world. In all honesty i would love to see the leafs competitive for no other reason then i enjoy watching quality hockey and since i see 60 - 65 of their games i certainly wouldn't mind watching them play well. Not to mention i anticipate the day hopefully prior to my 40's that the leafs win a cup as it will be one hell of a party and lots of free shopping when fans tear toronto apart in celebration.

Outside of nuxfans bashing leaf fans n vice versa on this thread i have to agree with slozo that the all star game should be represented by the most deserving players on that season. Someone mentioned that your reputation does not earn you a spot on the all star team if that where always the cs then clearly guys like Mike Green & Chara would not be on the team and a guy like Vishnovski, Jack Johson or John Michael Liles would have made it.

Many people state that the all star game is a useless game of pond hockey with no defense. May i remind you an all star game is meant to show the skill of the league and intended for those who are not regulars of the game. It is meant to show the casual hockey fan how impressive and talented nhl players can be. With that said though it is also sadly for many players the only individual honour they will recieve over the course of their career that is why i dislike the fact that most teams need to be represented

Honestly its hard to debate who should be at the All Star game. The game itself is not much of a showcase anymore as much as it is a circus act that has not much to do with hockey. They need to go back to the 80's when the game was an event of the true all stars in the game and no one backed out of going.
Now with huge dollars tied up in single players, teams are using the break to rest their investment instead of using them to promote the sport.
The winter classic has become the true showcase of the NHL and is doing more to promote the game then the all star could ever do again.
Do away with the all star game and showcase the leagues top teams each year in the winter classic instead. At least it would be a game that means something.

Your comparing a pure goal scorer vs a guy who would rather pass on breakaway. But if you look at their shots on goal and shooting % you will see that henrik trumps Kessel

Henrik: This year 81 shots 9 goals 11%
career: 1,134 shots 147 goals 13%

Kessel: This year 183 shots 19 goals 10.4%
career 1095 shots 115 goals 10.5%

For the First 4 years henrik and daniel played 3rd line minutes and Kessel was thrown right into the mix his rookie season, I cant See Kessel ever breaking the 100 pt mark or winning a Hart Trophy.

People complaining 3 Canucks made it
First of all Luongo should be up there but i assume he decided not to play. Edler Ehrhoff?

Amazing that Luongo isn`t there though. How many games have Van. lost in their last 25 or so ? You would think a goalie who is a major factor in a streak like this would be a shoe in.

Kessel only knows how to score by himself. Hes a streaker who doesnt produce every night. H.sedin Gets at least a point a game and leads the league in assists. Kesler is way better than kessel, whos playing 1st line minutes, while kesler's playing second line minutes. City of pitsburgh should be banned from voting for the all star game. 4 freakin represantives? Thats Bulls***!

Luongo has had a pretty ordinary year so far (by his standards at least). 4th in the league in wins (but he does play for the team that has the most wins), 12th in GAA, 11th in SV%. He's been very good since early Dec when VAN went on their streak, but before that he was inconsistent. I personally don't think that he has all-star numbers this year. Of the ones voted, I think Thomas, Lundqvist, and possibly Hiller deserve to be there before Luongo does. I think Howard deserves to be there more than any of them.

Cory Schneider started 7 games over the past 25 games as well, so its not like Luongo has done it alone. Schneider has been extraordinary this year as backup.
