Caught a bit by surprise on this one, there hasn't been much news about him. ATL certainly have the money and cap space to pay him that much, but I'm not sure if he's worth 5.2M a year yet. His production has certainly increased over CHI, and I'm assuming his role and playing time have as well, but this year is the first of such production.

Good signing or not?

Well, I think it's an overpayment but I think just about every deal is an overpayment. Byfuglien, as good as he has been this season, is not shown a history of a $5 million player. A 30 point a year guy is just not worth $5 million. He had a great start to the season averaging over a point a game to Christmas. Since Christmas he has 2 point. Trust me, I am in a draft with one trade window at Christmas time and I traded for Byfuglien. He has done nothing since then.

However, he is an absolute monster. You can't teach 6'5"-260 lbs. He can play forward and defense effectively. He a special teams specialist and those in Vancouver can tell you how effective he is once his team is in the playoffs.

I still see closer to $4 million the right price, but I have been proven wrong before.

I am in agreement with the two of you that although the potential is there 5mill maybe a bit steep for the time being. However; when you have Atl's history with star / potential stars (Kovy, Heatley, Hossa, Savard) you lock one up when their willing to hang around. For now it is an overpayment but maybe three yrs down the road we will look back and may call it a steal.

if they put the right players with him i think he would be a 50 point d-man. so one million per 10 points.
