Jarkko Ruutu of the Ottawa senators has been traded to Anaheim for a sixth round draft pick next year. And that's it.
Is Jarkko really worth that little? I thought he had a little more value then a sixth round pick a least. Has maybe an injury made him less valuable ?

C'mon people, we are smarter than this. I have been part of this site for 5 years and each year we go through the same thing at the trade deadline. How many years is it going to take for people to figure two things out:
1) No player gets value at the deadline. None. Ever.
2) UFA's have almost no value compared to their value 1-2 years earlier.
Sure, Ruutu's value is more than likely more than a 6th round pick but c'mon. He's a 20 point a year guy, high 20's in his best years. He is a utility guy with some sandpaper to him that will kill penalties and rub the other team the wrong way.
As a UFA, that sounds like a 6th round pick to me. |

I agree, his value is little to nothing! In fact, i wouldn't doubt if a team (insert Ducks) picked him up so that no one else would therefore not having to play against the idiot! Prob spend more time in the press box than on the ice! |

Depends on the player's contract. If a guy like Lecavalier, Gomez or Brière gets traded at the trade deadline of the last year of their contract, their value would probably be higher then if they get traded right now, ok maybe not Briere because he's having a good season.
Some teams just want that, to have a player for the playoffs and they don't want to be stuck with a big contract for the next few years.
I think teams will sometimes overpay for a star, because they want to make a run at the cup right now, but for a role player like Ruutu, I agree his value is lower near the trade deadline because their is so many players like him available.
As for the trade I'm just happy that Ruutu is sent west, boy I always hated that player (probably because he's good at what he does, being a pest).
Also for a lot of owners, a Stanley Cup push is huge with revenue because they play a lot more home games, fans buys a bunch of the team stuff, the excitement is in the air and it sells the team for the upcoming seasons (look at Carolina, Anaheim...) so for this reason, some teams will overpay to get a playoff push, yeah maybe it doesn't help the team long terme, but financially it does if they go to the finals. |
