Until he wins a cup . . . he isn't quite there yet.
Sorry, but that is the measuring stick for a player of Ovechkin's stature, especially when he is on a team as talented as Washington.

It does not matter if he has not won a cup because look at all the stuff he has done like scoring 4fifty goal seasons and winning the Calder and richard in his rookie season

The best since Gretzky??? Wow, I think a few guys like Peter Forsberg, Jaromir Jagr, Mario Lemieux, Joe Sakic, Jarome Iginla, just to name a few would have issues with that statement.
Ovechkin can not confidently viewed as the best today let alone the best in the past 10-15 season??? He is arguable the best and that is very debatable. |

By your standards then he actually pales in comparison to say, Teemu Selanne, who has the record for most goals by a rookie, a Calder, a Richard Trophy, is the Olympic games all time point leader, has over 600 goals, has won a Stanley Cup, and kept pace with Ovechkin as a 40 year old!!

OVI - BONER I think your a little acriminous that Ovechkin is the ultimate choke artist excuse the pun 
He's not even the best Russian in the league, that title belongs to Mr. Datsuyk little own the best player. Face it since the Oylmpics last yr Ovi is just another high quality goal scorer, that brings nothing else to his team or the game.
To be the best player you either have to stand well above the rest (Gretzky & Lemieux in their day) or be highly skilled in all facets of the game, which he does not do. I could think of 10 players I would sooner take if my goal was to win a cup, which as a GM is the only goal!

Whoa whoa whoa, you guys are being way too over-reactionary. A (ADMIN EDIT - CONTENT REMOVED) says he likes ovechkin and all of the sudden he is a marginal player? Can we keep it real?
The guy has 40 points in 28 playoff games. That is unreal, not exactly the sign of "the ultimate choke artist". He's gotta be the most physical "sniper" that I can think of, consistently in the race for most hits in the league. Does anybody remember when they were down 3-1 in games a couple of years ago: legendary quote: "you think the season is over?". Epic comeback, THAT is leadership.
I take Ovechkin over Datsyuk any day of the week. If you want to argue that he is not the best player since Gretzky, fine, I agree. If you want to argue that Crosby has one up on him right now, I probably agree with that too, but its a question mark. | This is a dumb conversation because it's not even our choice if he is captain or not and the Washington capitals put him captain because they think he is a leader so we should respect their decision and stop having cat fights over it |

I do believe that Ovechkin is indeed doing a decent job as the captain of the Caps, he seems to be playing a much more responsible game in this year's playoffs and is doing a lot more away from the puck, still not a Toews or Richards defensively, but not the Ovechkin of old either.

Ovechkin is a good hockey player - not a leader. His selfish play during the playoffs is a major contributing factor as to why the rest of the team abandoned the defensively responsible style that got them to the cup. His inability to motivate Semin also leaves me wondering if he is the undisputed leader on that team.
