I am very curious with what people think about Marc-Andre Fleury. The 1st overall draft pick in the 2003 draft seems to finally be getting into the groove of being a serious talent in the NHL. At least I think so. What does everyone else think?
His Stats this year as of now: 54GP 31W 14L 7OT 2.92GAA .903SV%

| I know that he is not the "real deal" right now...but based on his play thus far this season is he truly that 1st overall pick from '03? Back up to Brodeur in in Vancouver in 2010 maybe? |

He's still developing. I think the Pens wasted a pick on him, though...sending him down for sooooo many years. If a player is in the AHL, he will develop AHL talent. Just hope he can pull out of the tailspin he's been in lately

I fail to see where he played sooooo many years in the minors, in fact it was Two seasons and 12 games last year...The strike year he played in the minors, that would have been an advantage to him as few NHL goalies saw any action...
He is a serious tallent, although he may not see Olympic action in 2010...

He great to watch when he stops the pucks....he does have relapses into that world junior goalie that lost the gold for Canada...puck off his defense man????
Anyways...he makes some great save but is a little inconsistant....He's still really young and will continue to get better

| I think that elite status is definetly in his future. I think in 3 years he'll be ready to play for Canada behind Brodeur and Luongo. |

The way Brodeur is playing it will be hard to replace him as #1, but the competition is what makes all great players even better...Luongo and Fleury are the future, I hope they can keep it up...
I would rather have a bottle in front of me, than a frontal lobotomy…

Fleury is a good goalie. "Great" would be an understatment as of now, but his skills are developing and playing on a young Pens team will only help his development.
I think Fleury will be an elite goalie in this league soon, next 5 years or so. But was he the best in his draft year...
Players that were chosen that year were Eric Staal, Dion Phaneuff, Ryan Getzlaf, Patrick Eaves and Corey Perry just to name a few. So was Fleury the best pick that year, mabye, but you can't say that as of now.

| Fleury is good, no doubt, but he may have competition soon. The Penguins have lots of young talent at the goaltending position. We'll see what happens when Dave Brown (Notre Dame), the best collegiate goaltender, comes up next year for rookie camp. It should be an interesting question that the Penguins face. |

It's hard to tell right now who will play for team Canada in 2010, but Fleury definatly has a shot at it if he continues to improve his game.

I like his pads close up, when you can actually see the silver stripes but from far away they look plain ugly he should make the stripes wider

I didn't even know they had silver stripes. I like the US's goalie pads in the Olympics...stars and stripes on them. Pretty cool.
To get back on topic, I think Fleury will get better in a few years. Right now he's inconsistent, and sometimes that costs the Pens the game. I wouldn't say the whole team is inconsistent, Crosby and Malkin and Staal are always on it, and usually do well. Yeah Crosby kind of slumped off lately, but everyone slumps sooner or later, and that's different from being inconsistent and unpredictable with each game. |

Fleury is a pretty good tender and he is developing quite well. He is very young still. Typically goalies don't peak until later (29-34) So at 23 has a ton of time yet!
I actually think he should have spent more time in the minors. He was thrown to the wolves too early and his confidence was shaken quite badly at a very young age. But he is recovering well now because he has a talented young team in front of him now who also are inconsistent (so he doesn't get the blame all the time)
In my estimation, give him 5 years and he'll be ripping up the league. Until then I think he'll be on a fairly steady increase in performance.
As for Brodeur. He definitely is incredible and I have enjoyed watching him represent Canada over the years. But he turns 35 in a month so will he still be our top guy in 3 years? With all due respect to him, I don't think so. If he is indeed representing Canada in 2010 I think he'll be backing up Luongo. |

| Goalies typically mature at a much slower rate than skaters do, so I think Fleury will be just fine. Only time will tell how well he lives up to his expectations, but I think it's safe to say he's an NHL caliber goalie right now. |
