TSN is reporting the NHL salary cap will go from $59.4 million in the 10/11 season to a max of $64 million for the 11/12 season. This also pushes the bottom of the cap to $48 million.
This is going to present some opportunties for some clubs they would not have had. Here are the top 5 cap hit teams under the new $64 million cap, their new cap space, and the number of players they have under contract:
1 - Philly - $5.0 million cap space, 18 players signed 2 - Calgary - $7.6 million cap space, 18 players signed 3 - Pittsburgh - $7.6 million cap space, 18 players signed 4 - Chicago - $9.7 million cap space, 16 players signed 5 - San Jose - $11.7 million cap space, 15 players signed
Here are the 5 teams with the most cap space:
26 - Winnipeg - $28.1 million cap space, 15 players signed 27 - Colorado - $31.8 million cap space, 14 players signed 28 - Phoenix - $32.4 million cap space, 15 players signed 29 - Carolina - $32.9 million cap space, 12 players signed 30 - Florida - $45.7 million cap space, 11 players signed
This is going to make things very interesting this summer. Not only are some teams who looked to be out of the FA game because of cap issues back in to some degree, but some of the bottom teams will be challenged to make the low level of the cap.

Holy Crap, Winnipeg has 20 million they HAVE to spend, and they already have 15 players signed . . . that is a tonne of space!
As we had always thought, the cap floor is the real issue here in the new NHL, and teams like Florida, Carolina and even Colorado are gonna be in real trouble I think (as a franchise, financially).
Philly trades are a comin'! Of those top 5 cap hit teams, the one that stands out is Calgary, which has a huge payroll for an underachieving team. And I think with Iginla and Kipper aging, it's not too far from now that the rebuild will start there as it already has in Edmonton.
Would be interested to see the whole list, actually.

yeah, WIN is in an interesting position - they have to spend it, but unlike the ATL ownership, the new owners probably also want to spend it. They could make a lot of noise come July 1 just by their ability to overpay to get their man.
The cap raise is good news for any team that vows to spend to the cap, certainly for Vancouver. If they can get rid of Ballard's contract (perhaps WIN would like him!), I see no reason why they would not have room to sign both Ehrhoff and Bieksa, as well as fill in the other bits they need. |

Slozo, I use capgeek.com as my salary cap site of choice. I took their list and added the nearly $5 million to the cap.

Really Nuxfan?? You think if Vancouver dumps Ballard they will have the cap room for Ehrhoff, Bieksa, 2 Superstars that will not fold like lawnchairs in the playoffs AND a goalie who can win a game 7??
Good Luck!!

Its not too soon, I've been in summer mode since Thursday
Beiksa has already hinted in the local papers that he's willing to take less-than-market to stay in VAN - don't be surprised if VAN is able to land him at 4.5M/year for quite a few years (4.5M being Hamhuis money, which is reputed to be the "unofficial defense cap" in Vancouver), although if he hit the market he'd probably get over 5, maybe even 6 from TOR. While Ehrhoff has not said the same, he's indicated that he's looking for a deal that is "fair", and I don't know what that is. But the reality is that VAN still represents a legitimate chance to win, and that sort of environment lures players.
If VAN could get Ehrhoff and Bieksa under contract for a combined 9-9.25M a year (for > 5 years each), I'd be a happy camper. Its certainly possible. If they can only get 1, I believe first priority has to be Bieksa. |

Beans, if the Canucks need a goalie who can win a game 7, they may have to lure Hextall outta retirement cuz that goalie may have to score a goal or two to do so!
I agree nuxfan, Bieksa is more of a priority than Ehrhoff. Seems strange as Ehrhoff was so good this season and they've been searching for a PP QB for years! Just goes to show you how well Bieksa played as well, and i wouldn't hesitate a second to give Hamhuis some of the credit for that. |

this is good for my beloved habs, the Gomez contract was really cramping out style and this leaves the habs room to maybe add a better quality D man and buy out Spacek's contract

The Gomez contract is tough, but even with that deal Montreal is in good shape. They are going to have close over $20 million and they have 15 players under contract. In fact, that is a great position.
Also, not only do I think Spacek is still a decent player, but he's got a 35+ contract. A player who signs a deal after the age of 35 can be bought out, but it would be a 100% cap hit. There would be no savings in a buy out of Spacek's contract. Not only that, this is the last year of his deal. Why buy out a player for one year without getting any cap relief?? |
